Towards Building a More Comprehensive Study Abroad Program at

Get PDF
P(論文)Typically, Japanese universities provide support and guidance to study abroadparticipants by conducting pre-departure orientation and information sessions. Thescope of support and guidance, however, is limited to pre-departure programs anddoes not include guidance for students during or after their program has finished. As studentsʼ total study abroad experience extends from before the program, into, and often, even after their graduation from the university, support and guidancefor them should, therefore, also extend over this entire period. Based on this reasoning,a more comprehensive study abroad program which provides extended educationalsupport and guidance beyond the pre-departure preparation phase is proposed. To give an overview of such a program, the educational components necessary ateach stage of the program will be identified along with the educational purposes behindthem.departmental bulletin pape

P(論文)This VIIth Research Study on Transnational Sociology deals with benevolentsocial actions carried out by Japanese citizens as well as those carried out byJapanese NGOs in recent years. After surveying the limited literature concerning theseareas, the author has found the following major points.1. Almost all individual volunteers who have taken part in volunteer activitieshave experienced gratifying moments, the source of courage for continuingtheir volunteer work.2. A positive first step to initiate volunteer action is to visit some NGO officesand to take part in study tours in developing countries.3. There are some unique and successful NGOs in Japan, especially in local areas, blessed with competent personnel, rich in experience and of good character.4. Some other successful NGOs are given advice by academic specialists.5. Mutual cooperation has recently been growing among NGOs, local governments, business corporations, and academic institutions.Looking favourably upon the increasing interest and understanding of thepresent-day Japanese toward volunteer work and NGO activities in general, the authorsuggests the need for an adequate institutionalisation of social action at the academiclevel.departmental bulletin pape

Does The Epic of Gilgamesh belong to wisdomliterature?: Gilgamesh's trip seeking the 'secret of death and life'

Get PDF
The Epic of Gilgamesh (the Standard Babylonian version) was probably composed by Sin-l?qi-unninni as its editor in the Akkadian language to the best of our knowledge in about the 12th century BC, using as its base the older version of the epic (the Old Babylonian version) established in the early second Millennium BC. The Standard Babylonian version is known to us through the copies made in the 7th century BC in Nineveh. These copies were excavated in the 19th century AD and brought to the British Museum. In the epic, Gilgamesh grieved over the death of Enkidu, his friend, and was afraid of his own death. Longing for the ‘secret of death and life,’ he made a trip to visit ?ta-napi?ti who had been a human but was bestowed with eternal life by the gods after the Deluge. But ?ta-napi?ti told Gilgamesh that there was “now” no one to summon an assembly of the gods, the only place where Gilgamesh could also obtain eternal life. Then, he told Gilgamesh not to sleep for six days and seven nights. However, Gilgamesh fell asleep immediately. When he finally was woken up by ?ta-napi?ti and realized that he really had slept for seven nights, he received the insight that death was inevitable. On the way home, he found the special ‘heartbeat herb’ (?ammu nikitti) in accordance with ?ta-napi?ti’s instructions. But a snake ate the plant, presumably became rejuvenated by it, and cast off his skin while Gilgamesh was bathing. Gilgamesh was enormously discouraged and returned to Uruk, his home city. The ending of the story may seem to impresses upon the audience or the reader that the main intent of the story is to tell about Gilgamesh’s failure in his quest. But this impression is incompatible with the introduction of the story, in which the editor as a narrator introduces Gilgamesh as a man who indeed obtains wisdom after his painful journey to the other world. The author of this article is of the opinion that the intention of the editor of The Epic of Gilgamesh was complex and tricky. The editor caused the epic to give the audience or the reader the impression that Gilgamesh had failed. For example, Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) argued in his Histoire des croyances et des idees religieuses I (1976) that the epic primarily tells us of the failed initiation of Gilgamesh. However, at the same time, the editor concealed some clues in the form of editorial devices in the epic, so that a more heedful audience or reader might interpret the story as one that is in fact telling us that Gilgamesh did indeed acquire the ‘secret of death and life’ successfully. Seen in this light, this epic could be called an example of wisdomliterature or a book of arcana, but in this case it is disguised as an attractive adventure story. This may be the reason why it has still survived for several thousands of years, and why it may continue to be attractive to people for many ages to come.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDF
P(論文)This paper aims to evaluate student learning in social welfare practicums usinga qualitative research method. The principle data was gathered from practicum diarieskept by students who had complete their required social welfare practicum in order tobecome licensed social workers in their third year, during their 10-12 day advancedpracticum at clinics in their senior year. In this paper, the category of "understandingsupport structures," which was dealt with in my preceding paper, is primarily evaluated. In addition, the subcategories of "clarifying professional roles," "change in values,"and the level of interaction between the students and their instructors at theirrespective clinics was also analyzed. The results demonstrated that students were found to acquire a betterunderstanding of the professionalism of social work by participating in certainprograms distinctive to the clinics. These programs included especially those for clientsupport, such as meeting with other professionals within oneʼs own clinic or workingin cooperation with outsiders. The students could understand both the situation inwhich a client in question was placed and the background of the clientʼs problems. At the same time, the students became aware of their own values. Gradually theybecame able to respect the wishes and thoughts of both the clients and their families.departmental bulletin pape

The Use of Verbal Instructions in Investigations with Young Children

Get PDF
P(論文)Three to 5 year old children have not fully acquired the skills of language. For example, their ability to understand how to speak intelligibly, and to understandwhat is said to them is still in the process of developing toward the abilities of olderchildren and adults. This often makes their verbal responses to investigating questionshard to evaluate. The reason is that children of this age group may not understandor fully understand a verbal instruction. Moreover, their nervous systems are notfully developed. In this paper, one investigation where conclusions were based onthe responses of 3-5 year old children to a verbal instruction will be compared withexperimental evidence of the stages that children 1-6 years old are observed topass through as they begin to comprehend and respond to certain kinds of verbalinstructions. Thus, the practice of using similar experimental methods in investigationswith both children and adults will be evaluated.departmental bulletin pape
