Do Intimates Communicate by Richer Media? : Interpersonal Relationships and Communication Media Choice among Japanese Youths

journal articl

Suggesting an Approach of Social Sciences towards a "Desirable Global Society" : The Role of International Studies in the 21st Centuy

P(論文)The author considers it important for present-day social scientists to offer a theoretical schema as tohow to create a "Desirable Global Society" of the 21st Century, as it is important for the principal decision-makers of the world (G8 and international organizations as UN, etc.) to present concrete solutionswith long-standing views to cope with the increasing global problems of today. In the academic field, however, where the analyses of the changing actual world situations of various aspects dominate, it israre to find a work that gives perspective for the creation of a "Desirable Global Society" of the 21st Century. The author, in the new discipline of Transnational Sociology, has hitherto been elaborating formore than ten years an integrating design for approaching this "Desirable Global Society." One resultas an example can be illustrated in his visual model of an Ideal Type of a modern man' s attitude vis-à-visthe society in order to form a bridge between a modern individual and "the Global Society". A personmay, at one time, offer willingly various services to the society which presents itself in various formsaround him or her, such as a family, a local community, a national society, a grand-region as EU, and aGlobal Society). At another time, he or she may devote himself or herself to his (her) own personal pleasurefor relaxation as well as enjoyment. This model is based upon the idea of combining the altruisticand individualistic tendencies of a modern person represented in his (her) social attitude. The author, after showing a rough sketch of the author's tentative theoretical outline (including the above-mentionedmodel), feels it important for present-day social scientists, especially in the domain of internationalstudies, to explore together the next step. This, according to the author, may reside in a study of thefuture possibilities of the varying relationships between "the existing system" and "the counter system"as well as in the study of efforts done by the both systems to approach a "Desirable Global Society".departmental bulletin pape

Political TV Reporting and Political Consciousness

    Get PDF
P(論文)In 1980's books and articles on the impacts and influence of TV reporting about politics on politicalattitudes and voting behavior were published in the U.S. By contrast, there were very few articles onMedia and Politics in Japan. Although there will be many reasons for this difference, one of the mostimportant would be the severe restrictions on TV use in the field of political reporting in Japan in comparisonwith that in the U.S. As a result, it was thought that the impact and influences of TV reportingon the political attitudes and voting behavior were huge in the U.S., in contrast to Japan. As the quantity and quality of TV reporting on politics increased and improved, the influences ofTV reporting on politics were discussed in comparison with reporting by other media, such as newspaperand magazine. TV reporting with sound and images is usually more interesting and easy to understandin comparison to print media. Thus, TV reporting is supposed to have more educational functionthan print media. At the same time, TV reporting on politics often deals with the private life and scandalsof politicians and gossip in the political world. It seems to make people more skeptical and cynicalabout politicians and politics as a whole.Another important change is observed in the field of variety programs on TV. Recently, variety TVprograms, basically programs for entertainment, often pick up political topics and invite politicians asguests and commentators. Such a trend seems to reinforce the merits and demerits of TV reporting inthe field of politics as discussed above. We selected 15 representative info-variety programs and conducted public opinion polls all overJapan on the impact and influences of these TV programs on the political consciousness of the people. The reasons are not yet clear but there are many different impacts and influences of these various infovarietyTV programs, which suggest many interesting research topics in the future.departmental bulletin pape

Possible Benefits of PTA Activities in a Christian-Affiliated Kindergarten : The Church-Run Kindergarten's Role in the Development of a Caring Community

    Get PDF
P(論文)A decrease in "social competence" has been pointed out as one of the current trends that Japanesesociety is experiencing. Furthermore, one of the reasons for this phenomenon is that attachment, interestand trust toward others are becoming weaker. Recently parents, especially mothers, appear to havea tendency towards both pampering and also wanting to excessively control their children. However, within the group of mothers involved in PTA activities of a church-affiliated kindergarten where I havebeen working, there seem to be few demanding or needy parents. It may be that such a group of mothersconnected with a church-affiliated kindergarten has a natural tendency towards forming deeperattachments and having an interest in and trusting others. There may also be a stronger attitude ofcooperation with others than is found in society as a whole. If this is so, why might such a phenomenonhave happened?I have three hypotheses: 1) the mothers in the group may have certain ideas related to Christianitythat are reflected in their actions; 2) experience with PTA activities may give mothers a chance todevelop their parenting skills; and 3) PTA activities, such as preparing for and holding festivals, createopportunities to strengthen relationships between the mothers and provide opportunities for them tosee various models of parenting. Also, through the extension of the network between mothers thatengaging in PTA activities creates, the kindergarten becomes a place where mothers feel at ease, whichcould encourage them to have more children. In sum, this article discusses how a kindergarten canfunction as a caring community when it has a cooperative and primary role in raising children.departmental bulletin pape
