Pathography and Spirituality of Psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya

    Get PDF
Although Dr. Mieko Kamiya was an excellent psychiatrist and poet, she could not adapt to school life and felt the hardships of life in young age. Furthermore, she contracted tuberculosis, a disease of death at the time, and recuperated alone at a villa in Karuizawa with feelings of despair. She fell into a deep depressive state and spent days of distress. In closed extreme situations, Kamiya had the mysteriousexperience of having her whole body bathed in divine light. She thus had the consciousness of a second life, because of her rebirth from the depths of despair. After this experience, Kamiya claimed to have been born again and desired strongly to exist for extremely anguished people. Having awakened her spirituality, she said that she had been made to speak by a devil in her mind (exactly the spiritual dimension). She had come to express her deep emotion in poetry and she felt the mission to sacrifice her life for extremely anguished Hansen's disease patients. Psycho-therapy for Hansen's disease patients was indeed spiritual care. Spiritual care had idealist and unclear areas. Psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya's natural, inevitable and sympathized psycho-therapy was a valuable practice for thinking aboutspiritual care. That practice was recorded in Mieko Kamiya's writings.departmental bulletin pape

Study of the Expansion of Attracting Foreign Tourists from Europe : A Case Study of Two Cities : Bath in the United Kingdom and Kamakura in Japan

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to study ways of attracting foreign tourists as a means of improving the worldwide standing of Japan and the Japanese people. Future activities and possible improvements are a main aspect of the paper. While focusing on the attraction of tourists from Europe, a comparison between the cities of Bath (United Kingdom) and Kamakura (Japan) will serve as a case study. With international tourism booming in recent years, a study from 2009 ranked the number of Japanese travelling abroad as 15th worldwide, while the number of foreigners travelling to Japan occupied 28th place. These figures imply that, although recognized as an advanced country, Japan might be regarded as an under-developed country in respect to tourism. By contrast, although the United Kingdom is similar to Japan in being an island nation, it has developed unique strategies for attracting foreign tourists and, as a result, ranks 6th worldwide. British tourism policies date back to the 1980s, when the promotion of tourism and environmental protection were already equally developed as core policies on a national level. Accordingly British tourism policies can provide significant implications for tourism policies in Japan. The city of Bath shares with Kamakura characteristics such as its location from main cities and its abundance of sightseeing resources. However, it can also be seen as a forerunner among World Heritage cities - a status Kamakura is still seeking. Moreover, 93% of Bath's residents support tourism and cooperate in fostering the city's tourist development together with the local administration. By contrast, a survey conducted by the author revealed that only 44% of Kamakura residents support tourism. Hence in order to develop Kamakura into an international tourist city, Bath serves as an excellent benchmark example. The author conducted a survey among 65 residents of Switzerland on the topic of hospitality and Japanese culture. The results of the survey are used to highlight the weak points of Japanese hospitality and to suggest hints for further improvement. Moreover, they show the effectiveness of using keywords such as "Japanese culture" and "Japanese Culture Experience Tourism" in order to attract and increase the number of tourists from Europe to Japan.departmental bulletin pape

The Nurse Shortage in Japan : The Issue of Admitting Nurses from the Philippines

    Get PDF
Japan is facing the rapid aging of its population resulting from a low birthrate. One consequent problem is the shortage of nurses. The government solution for increasing the number of nurses is the admittance of nurses from the Philippines under certain circumstances. This measurement by itself has some difficulties such as the candidates' visa type, non-recognition of foreign certification, the number of candidates, and, finally, the cost. The visa type for the admitted candidates is not in the category of immigration. The foreign nursing certification of the candidates is not recognized, so they need to apply for a Japanese nursing licence by passing a Japanese government examination in Japanese. Successful candidates are permitted to work in Japan and renew their visas, but all others have to leave Japan.Based on the agreement, the Japanese government admitted 400 candidates in two years, but according to the statistics, Japan had a shortage of 15,900 nurses in 2010. Finally, the hospitals that admit the candidates have to bear the burden of expenses. This paper proposes a system in order to increase the number of nurses by making effective use of foreign students who hold Japanese government scholarships. According to statistics, there were 132,720 foreign students in Japanese universities in 2009, and almost 10% of them receive scholarships from the Japanese government. More than 75% of such students continue their studies in higher education or are employed after graduation in Japan. This is an ideal reason to use the power of highly educated foreign students not only in the nursing system but also in any other industries that suffer from lack of employees. Such students should be selected before arriving in Japan and should be introduced to nursing universities. After graduation, they can start working in hospitals and other facilities as a nurse. In this way and by using the same scholarship budget for foreign students, the system does not need to establish an extra budget for educating new nurses. In addition, if the students are educated in Japan and have the ability to read and write Japanese, they will be more familiar with Japanese life systems and Japanese culture.departmental bulletin pape

Food Allergy Support for Pre-school Children : A Survey in preschool nursery

    Get PDF
This study investigated the modalities of support for preschool children with food allergies. Recently, allergic diseases have been increasing. It is said that approximately one-third of the population is afflicted with some sort of allergic disease. The most common allergic diseases among children in kindergartens and day nurseries are food allergy diseases. In nurseries and kindergartens, each childcare person must support the development of the children's minds and health. In other words, each childcare person has to support the quality of life in the kindergarten. The purpose of this study is to clarify the current state of food allergies among nursery and kindergartenchildren. In addition, it aims to clarify the purpose of supporting children with food allergies and discuss supporting children with food allergies. It concludes that food assistance should be offered to preschool children with allergic diseases as follows: a. By creating a safety manual for children with allergic diseases b. By offering adequate assistance to parents c. By collaborating with health care institutions d. By assisting parents to understand their children's condition e. By sharing information and assistance with other childrenThese five items are not independent of each other. Support in each item should be made in relation to the others.departmental bulletin pape

Maintaining Connection between a Person who Committed Suicide and the Bereaved : A Perspective on Religious Grief Care

    Get PDF
This paper is about the possibility of a kind of religious grief care which includes not only the bereaved family, but also the dead. The dead surely do not have a physical presence in the world of the living, but the dead still influence the bereaved silently in psychological ways. Because of this, the bereaved cannot ignore the dead. Emotions associated with the dead, for example, sorrow, love and anger, come to the bereaved continuously. Therefore, religious grief care is necessary. In this paper, I will discuss this kind of religious grief care in the case of suicide. In such cases, the bereaved can suffer such a deep and serious grief that it might seem they can hardly recover. In religious grief care, the bereaved are often asked to recognize the dead as a partner in a kind of dialogue. However, it might be difficult for them to do so in the early stages of grief. So, by continuously addressing the dead, it may become easier. I will illustrate three ways of carrying out this kind of religious grief work that helps the bereaved address the person who has died. These activities are “telling about their emotions,” “writing messages to the dead,” and “praying and sending messages through certain religious rituals.” Even though a family member may commit suicide suddenly, the family relationship between the dead and the bereaved must not be broken off. In religious grief care, it is thought that a relationship can continue after death and can be reconstructed through grief work. In addition, this kind of grief work seems to be best realized if a good personal relationship can be established between the grief counselor and the bereaved. The role of religious personnel can also become essential in this work, especially if they are trusted to conduct rituals that help bereaved persons find relief from their grief.departmental bulletin pape
