Biochemical changes of rice genotypes against blast (Magnaporthe oryzae) disease and SSR marker validation for resistance genes
Rice blast caused by Magnoporthe oryzae is a major devastating fungal disease and represents a potential threat to world rice productions. However, information about the genetic and biochemical basis of disease tolerance is still limited. In this study, we tested the presence and diversity of resistant R genes using SSR markers, and the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidise (APX) and guaicol peroxidise (POD), activity and also the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in resistant (BAUdhan 3) and susceptible (BRRIdhan 28) genotype. Molecular marker analysis reveals the presence of all ten studied resistant genes in BAUdhan 3. Among the markers studied, three markers namely RM224, RM72 and RM206 produce distinct band only in resistant genotype BAUdhan 3, which might be used to screen resistant genotypes. The enzymatic activity of APX, CAT and POD increased in the inoculated plant for both cultivars but the increase was more prominent for BAUdhan 3. The M. oryzae infections significantly increased the H2O2 content in BRRIdhan 28 and not much changed in BAUdhan 3. The MDA concentration was higher in the leaves of inoculated plants of BRRIdhan 28. The higher activities of APX and POD in the leaves of the inoculated plants of BAUdhan 3 resulted in lower H2O2 accumulation which can minimize the cellular damages possibly caused by reactive oxygen species. The result shows that the presence of more resistance genes and an effective antioxidative system in BAUdhan 3, which limits the damage caused due to fungal infection and thus contributes to greater resistance
Effect of mixed cropping of water yam (Dioscorea alata) on Ganoderma disease of oil palm
Basal stem rot caused by a soil-borne fungus, Ganoderma boninense, is one of the most severe diseases in monoculture oil palm plantations. The effect of mixed cropping with water yam on infection and inoculum potential of Ganoderma boninense on oil palm seedlings was assessed under a pot experiment. Plant inoculation with rubber woodblock (RWB)-colonized Ganoderma induced disease on both mixed cropped hosts (multiple host infection), but with less severe root necrotic and less plant mortality relative to inoculation on a single oil palm host. Inoculum potential of the pathogen was reduced under mixed cropping, as shown by more considerable RWB decay than a single host, and the fungal survival was suppressed to be 55% for 12 months trial. Water yam mixed cropping did not interfere with the growth of the inoculated oil palm seedling. This study revealed the multiple host infection under mixed cropping with water yam suppressed damage caused by Ganoderma boninense to oil palm as the primary host
Correlation of total phenolic and flavonoid contents on the antioxidant activity of Psychotria gitingensis and Psychotria pilosella
The genus Psychotria (Rubiaceae) possesses various biological properties, ranging from phytochemical and pharmacological properties of their chemical constituents to traditional medical applications. Most Psychotria species remain unstudied despite high diversity and endemism in the Philippines. Hence, this study investigates the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of Psychotria gitingensis and Psychotria pilosella methanolic crude extracts, evaluates their antioxidant properties, and assesses their antibacterial properties. Results revealed that P. gitingensis fruit extract exhibited the highest phenolic content (254.45 ± 6.63 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid content (9.85 ± 0.49 mg QE/g). In addition, it also displayed the highest antioxidant activity (0.993 ± 0.041 mg/mg) in the ABTS assay. P. pilosella leaf extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in DPPH (70.53% ± 1.50), and P. gitingensis leaf extract showed the highest iron-reducing antioxidant power (86.06% ± 0.73) in FRAP. Paper disk diffusion tests, however, did not exhibit activity against selected nosocomial pathogens. The results of this study contribute to expanding the field of knowledge on alternative treatments and paving the way for the development of new medicinal products
Morphological responses of three contrasting Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) genotypes under different levels of salinity stress in the coastal region of Bangladesh
Soil salinity, a global environmental issue, inhibits plant development and production. Soybean is an economically important legume crop whose yield and quality are highly affected by excessive levels of salt in the root zone. A factorial experiment was conducted in a net house from October 2019 to January 2020 to evaluate the performance of three distinct soybean genotypes under varying levels of salinity stress. The experiment followed a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Three soybean cultivars, namely BINA Soybean 1, BINA Soybean 2, and BINA Soybean 4 were used in this experiment. The soil salinity treatments were 0 mM NaCl, 50 mM NaCl, 100 mM NaCl, 150 mM NaCl, and 200 mM NaCl. The electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil sample was 0.91dS/m. Six seeds were sown 3 cm deep in each pot. A total of 45 pots were used in this experiment. The performance of each variety was evaluated based on its germination percentage, time of germination, no. of branches/plant, no. of leaves/plant, no. of flowers/plant, plant height (cm), no. of pods/plant, pod length (cm), seeds/pod, and root length (cm). Based on the results obtained from this research trial, it can be inferred that the BINA Soybean 2 variety along with 0 mM NaCl, 50 mM NaCl, and 100 mM NaCl treatments exhibited superior performance in all parameters compared to the other varieties. This study provides clear evidence that the soybean, particularly the BINA Soybean 2 variety, holds significant promise as a crop suitable for coastal regions. Furthermore, it suggests that the cultivation of soybeans in such areas could potentially enhance agricultural productivity, particularly in the presence of mild saline conditions. Nevertheless, it exhibits limited growth potential in environments with elevated salinity levels
Comparative foliar anatomical study of six different varieties of Piper betle L.
The present investigation on a few selected cultivars of Piper betle L. was undertaken mainly to understand the anatomy and tissue components of the stem, leaves and petiole. This was accomplished by using basic anatomy techniques such as free hand and microtome sectioning. The varieties selected were: HY1, HY2, JB, KB, LV and SG. Major aspects of the present inquiry were - macro morphology, anatomy and histochemistry. The main focus of the study was on the internal structure of leaves and petioles to understand the role of specialised cells like enlarged hypodermal cells and mucilage cavities in retaining moisture and thereby preserving the shelf life of harvested leaves

Calcium is one of the most fundamentally significant and essential component for the human body since it makes up the majority of the skeletal system in humans (98%). The goal of the present review study was to discuss calcium’s importance in everyday life, calcium absorption theories, eggshell (ES) deposition, and its nutritional makeup. There are two phases to ES formation. 5.5 grams of calcium carbonate, or about 95% of the dry ES, are present. One ES contains traces of sodium, potassium, zinc, manganese, iron, and copper as well as 0.3% phosphorus, 0.3% magnesium, and sodium, potassium, zinc, manganese, and iron. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption; hence, calcium bioavailability is influenced by dietary calcium intake as well as vitamin D status. Calcium may reabsorb at a number of places along the nephron. Intestinal acidity (particularly for CaCO3 absorption), oestrogen, vitamin D, and soluble fibre/prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics are some of the elements that have been shown to favourably boost calcium absorption. Pulsed electric fields, high-energy milling, and electric discharge-assisted mechanical milling are relevant techniques that have been studied and might be used to extract calcium from ESs. Missing heritability paradox in schizophrenia: hypothesis and plausible clues: Article Retracted by the Authors
Genetic research on schizophrenia, a common psychiatric disease with complex etiology and high (56-80%) heritability, has failed to identify causal genes, variants or causative mechanisms. Given the extensive effort and limited success to date, it is imperative to review potential reasons for this missing heritability. We argue that a successful elucidation of hereditary mechanisms in schizophrenia will likely involve; the identification of discrete endophenotypes; attention to the role of neurodevelopment and cell differentiation; consideration of the genome structure including temporal and spatial patterns, accommodation of environmental effects at the level of gene expression including any sex differences and pattern of mutations including de novo events and the use of analytic techniques that go beyond genome wide association studies. Identification of the heritable component of schizophrenia and sources of “missing heritability” is needed to understand the cause/s of the disorder and to facilitate the development of effective corrective and possibly preventive measures
Taxonomic significance of leaf architecture in the genus Basella Linn. in Nigeria
This study seeks to use the leaf architecture as a taxonomic tool for members of the genus Basella Linn. in Nigeria, namely, B. rubra Linn., B. alba Linn., B. cordifolia Lamk. and a form, B. alba round because the taxonomy of the genus Basella Linn. is not clear and there is no information on the leaf architecture of the genus. For studies of the venation pattern of the leaves, sizeable portions were taken from the standard median portion of mature leaves. Cleared leaves were stored in 50% alcohol for anatomical studies. Leaves were stained in Safranin O for 3 minutes and counterstained in Alcian blue and then were rinsed in water to remove excess stain. Stained cleared leaves were treated in serial grades of alcohol for differentiation and dehydration. Stained materials were mounted in dilute glycerol for microscopic examination. Photomicrographs were taken with the aid of 3013 ACCU-SCOPE Trinocular Microscope with Digital Camera. The areolar area was calculated from the length and breadth of the areoles measured using a micrometer inserted into the microscope eyepiece. Basella species have common generic features. Areoles are closed in B. rubra but others have veinlet endings. The area of areole is diagnostic because in B. rubra the area is 305,370±1808.91 μm2; B. alba is 501,796.75±3217.38 μm2, B. cordifolia’s area of areole is 396,394.75±2670.67 μm2 while that of B. alba round is 540,058.75±3702.28 μm2. Effects of Art Therapy on Autistic Children with Visual Impairment
The use of art in therapeutic form is very popular and its benefits are proven. Many therapists employ artistic methods to address the complications of autism for a long time but the increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder with visual impairment is being witnessed these days. The present study aims to study the effects of art therapy intervention on the dual disability of autism and blindness. For this study two children having moderate autism with visual impairment were selected. Activities planned for them majorly focused on the stimulation of their tactile senses. The art therapy project for these students was divided into four stages: Pre-stage - the exploration of art material. In this stage, children were made familiar with different art materials. The second stage included tactile art-sand drawing, and the third and last stage activities were coins activity and paper weaving activity. It was designed to enhance motor skills and coordinated hand and body movement. There was resistance shown by both of them at the initial stage. However, the results after extensive sessions of their participation in activities indicated positive improvement in concentration. Their typical behavior of avoidance was also reduced. The results suggest that a tailored approach with the coordination of other experts and parents can help to overcome the complexity of their disorder
New report on the invasive Bondar's Nesting Whitefly (Paraleyrodes bondari Peracchi) on oil palm in India
This communication is the new report of the neotropical invasive Bondar's Nesting Whitefly (BNW) , Paraleyrodes bondari Peracchi (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)incidence in oil palm in India. A typical feature of BNW infestation is the presence of woolly wax nests on the abaxial surface of oil palm leaflets. The nesting whitefly population was observed to increase phenomenally on oil palm and within a year ie., from 2021 to 2022, a 100 per cent palm infestation was observed. During this period the intensity per palm increased by 24.49 per cent and per leaf increased by 63.28 per cent. Analysis of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) sequences from adult specimens indicated 100% nucleotide identity with Bondar's Nesting Whitefly from coconut
