Critical Discourse Analysis of Rabih Alameddine's Novel "An Unnecessary Woman (2014)"

This paper aims at analyzing the issue of feminism about women's bodies, self-identification, and self-conscious through the resistance of the female protagonist against patriarchal, religious, and political constraints in light of Rabih Alameddine's Novel "An Unnecessary Woman" (2014)  in which the fallacious practices towards women and their sexuality in the patriarchal society are presented. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Fairclough (1989) CDA Model. To achieve the objectives of this study, the researcher divided the paper into three parts. The first part discussed the concept of feminism and the status of Arab women in the postmodern or 21st century, particularly during the Civil war of Lebanon (1975). The second part illustrated Alameddine’s concept of feminism and the social milieu, which influences his writings; and the third part reflected the sarcastic tone employed by Alameddine to address the patriarchal practices and social concerns of males and females of the 21st century. In Alameddine's society, females are almost treated as submissive sexual objects, and inferior voices are disjointed and fragmented in entirely a patriarchal society

Challenges in Academic Top Leadership as Perceived by Women Leaders

The leadership of Higher Education in the Philippines both in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) have been led by men leaders. However, in this changing world, a lot of empowered women have been taking the position of top leadership in this sector and remarkably adapt the good practices that would benefit the institution they are serving. In this climate of change where new leadership style is applied, challenges are inevitable which requires skills to make a wise decision that would benefit all stakeholders. In this study, five women presidents were interviewed to explore how they perceived challenges in their leadership journey. Findings revealed that women presidents experience the same challenges as to men in various ways yet these challenges made their faith even stronger and their character finer. On the other hand, challenges affect the implementation of change. It was a huge challenge but their desire to put their respective institution on spotlight drives them to become more determined with motherly approach in the process. This has become their edge in enforcing teamwork among their employees which open doors for smooth implementation of change

Reassessing Pakistan’s Geopolitical Orientation from the Post-Cold War Era to 9/11

The end of Cold War, with the demise of Soviet Union, has led to the restructuring of superpower priorities in the international system. It was due to Pakistan's geo-strategic position during the Cold War that its foreign policy direction was shaped by the binary geography of Cold War in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). However, with the dawn of the Post -Cold War, Pakistan has gained much importance in geographical as well as geopolitical conditions of the world. Thus, the new decade of the 1990s began with Islamabad's losing their chief strategic allies. The U.S.-Pakistan differences were expressed during in Pressler amendment with the United States. Whereas, with the emergence of Central Asian Republics (CARs), it was supposed to offer Pakistan the opportunity of new strategic alliances.  The New War on global terrorism especially after 11th September 2001, radically transformed geopolitical and geostrategic environment of the IOR and significance of Pakistan has increased. It is against this backdrop that research article intends to explore the strategic dimensions of Pakistan in the post -Cold War period with its relations to emerging states of   CARs and the U.S., especially in the last decade of twentieth century

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different animal manure to tomato production. The study adapted the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) of experiment having five (5) treatments which were; Treatment A- 40% Horse manure with 10% carbonized rice hull and 50% Garden soil; Treatment B- 40% Cattle manure with 10% carbonized rice hull and 50% Garden soil; Treatment C- 40% Goat manure with 10% carbonized rice hull and 50% garden soil; Treatment D- 40% Vermicast with 10% carbonized rice hull and 50% Garden soil; Treatment E- 100% Garden soil Control and were replicated three (3) times. It appeared that the application of cattle manure & carbonized rice hull combination and goat manure & carbonized rice hull combination had significantly influenced the total weight harvested, weight of yield per harvest and number of fruits per harvest of tomato. The fruit diameter was significantly affected by the application of horse manure and carbonized rice hull combination. The growth increment, average number of days from flowering to first harvest and fruit length of tomato were not directly influenced by the different organic fertilizer and soil enhancer applied. Therefore, the different animal manure mixed with carbonized rice hull applied as fertilizer gave uniform response to the tomatoes in its vegetative stage. Combining or mixing all the treatments (animal manure) and carbonized rice hull applied in the study would give significant results to the organic production of tomatoes

From Victims to Heroes: COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Donation Awareness, Knowledge, and Willingness among Selected Respondents in the City of Manila

The increasing COVID-19 cases continue to rattle the Philippine healthcare system in determining the most optimal response. Efficient and effective therapeutic strategies—such as the use of convalescent plasma—for managing COVID-19 patients are needed while definitive and universal programs are still in the works. However, the consistency of implementing the COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) therapy heavily depends on the supply of donated plasma units. With this, the study aimed to assess the overall knowledge and awareness of recovered COVID-19 patients regarding convalescent plasma and the factors that can affect their willingness to donate. A non-proportional quota sampling technique was employed to determine the respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Pearson’s r test determined a significantly high positive correlation between donor willingness and the factors that motivate individuals to donate CCP (p-value=0.000; r=0.738), indicating that these two variables are directly related. The values obtained from the study show that knowledge demonstrates a significant, very low positive correlation with age (p-value=0.053; r=053), while awareness displays a significant, very low positive correlation with donor willingness (p-value=0.000; r=0.282). These findings suggest that motivational factors should be emphasized in the interventions and recruitment strategies for CCP donation. Continuous efforts in making the process more accessible while assuring security and safety aid to address factors that impede the practice of donating CCP. Lastly, reinforcing educational blood donation campaigns to know more about blood products other than whole blood should be available to the public, especially for the younger generations

The Neuroprotective Effect of Lycopodium and Withania Somnifera on Alzheimer’s Disease Induced by Aluminum Chloride in Rats

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a serious health problem worldwide and known as the most common type of neurodegenerative diseases. Lycopodium (Lyc) and Withania Somnifera (WS) contains a bio active compound that proved to restore and improve cholinergic system. The present study aimed to examine the neuroprotective potential of Lyc and WS on Aluminum Chloride induced AD in rats. Fifty female Albino rats were equally and randomly divided to five groups, ten rats in each group. The rats of the first group received distilled water and served as control. The rats from second to fifth group received AlCl3 (175mg/kg), the second groups consider as AD group, in addition to AlCl3, third group received Lyc (50mg/kg), fourth received WS (200mg/kg), fifth received both treatments. After 30 days, the Acetylcholine (Ach), Acetylcholinesterase (AchE), Butyrylcholinesterase (BchE), Amyloid beta-42 (Ab-42), Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and Na+/K+ATPase were evaluated. The result showed that AlCl3 significantly increased Ach, AchE, BchE, Ab-42 levels, and significantly decreased TH and Na+/K+ ATPase levels in rats model of AD. Administration of Lyc and WS to rats model of AD for 30 days showed an improvement in biochemical alteration caused by AlCl3. This study suggests that oral administration of Lyc and WS have a neuroprotective effect in AD animal model
