A Proposal to Build a Knowledge Management System Based on the Service Approach in the Context of Academic Library Digitalization at Jazan University - Saudi Arabia

In the previous decade, most of the major universities and public library systems have switched over to computers. However, almost all these library systems follow traditional implementation approaches which make it very difficult for them to interact with other systems or migrate to emerging technologies. Also, while most of the library systems do provide online, remote and public access catalogues for knowledge but they have still not utilized the power of cutting edge technologies to take complete advantage of the resources of virtual world. The subject of digital library includes online catalogues, real-time databases etc, while being used extensively in many fields, are still relatively unexplored in the academic world. In order to create a system which provides integrative, normative, reliability and inclusiveness with latest features yet remains open for modifications and extensions. It is important to choose an implementation approach which supports interoperability, abstraction and loose coupling of components and resources. Towards this end, Service oriented architectural approach (SOA) has proved to be very successful in fulfilling these needs in several areas. The idea behind this study is to propose a complete digital library and information services based learning environment using the SOA approach to apply for the academic libraries resources of the Jazan University so that gaps in terms of knowledge management as well as other services needs can be fulfilled with a single centralized architecture and framework

The Perception of Arabic-Accented English Vowels

This article examines the intelligibility of the English spoken by Arab speakers of English. This study started from three experiments designed to test whether Malay speakers of English can perceive the selected English vowels produced by an Arabic speaker of English from Oman. The findings suggest that the Arabic-accented English evaluated is generally intelligible to Malay speakers of English. It can be seen that Arabic speaker’s productions of English vowel monophthongs that have Arabic analogs were not necessarily more intelligible than those that lack Arabic counterparts. Though an interference of the L1 vowel system was found, this study does agree with the statement of Flege and Port (1981, p. 133), that “phonetic differences between L1 and L2 will lead to non-L2 phonetic characteristics in the L2 produced by the learners of the L2 language”

Research on Extracurricular English Learning Motivation of Junior High School Students

Based on the relevant theories of English learning motivation and the data provided by the questionnaire, in combination with teaching practice, analyses the current situation and characteristics of Junior high students’ English learning motivation. This paper analyses the differences in English learning motivation among students and probes into the influence of different motivations and the main factors affecting the English learning motivation of students by comparing the relationship between achievement and motivation. The results show that learning motivation is one of the most important factors affecting students’ English learning. Students with strong learning motivation will have a strong interest in English learning and consciously participate in it. On the other hand, students with lower motivation will have a more negative attitude toward English learning. English learning is a process of bilateral communication, so teachers should do their best to optimize the motivation of English learning. As extracurricular English teachers, only by understanding the students’ learning motivation, can we effectively arouse the student’s enthusiasm for learning English, and teachers should also have insight into the students’ psychology, understand their internal and external needs, and strengthen them. Among them, reasonable and effective factors can better impart knowledge and skills to achieve the ideal teaching effect. At the end of this study, some effective measures to motivate and keep the English learning motivation of students are put forward to improve the English learning achievement of extra-curricular English study students

Antimicrobial Activity of the Rhizospheric Bacillus Species Isolated from Potato (Solanum tuberosum) Organic Farm Soils in the Philippines

The purpose of this study is to determine the potential of rhizospheric bacteria belonging to the genus Bacillus isolated from the organic soil of Solanum tuberosum (potato) as an untapped and promising source of novel antimicrobials to combat infections, particularly multidrug-resistant strains. The rhizospheric Bacillus species were isolated using serial dilution and aerobic cultivation. Hydrolytic exoenzyme production was determined using plate techniques, whereas antimicrobial activity was determined using the cross-streak method and agar-disc diffusion assay. The data indicate that the Bacillus isolates possess antimicrobial property against gram-positive bacterial pathogens. The activities were compared to those of the antibiotic Rifampicin as a control. Notably, several Bacillus isolates inhibited the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The top performing Bacillus isolates were identified by 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis, which showed the similarities of the isolates to known soil-associated and plant-growth-promoting species; B. velezensis, B. mojavensis, B. subtilis, B. sonorensis, B. tequilensis, B. clausii, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. altitudinis, and B. siamensis from those sequences available in GENBANK. The present investigation establishes the presence of antagonistic Bacillus species in S. tuberosum's rhizosphere. The findings may form the basis for further investigation of the active compounds produced by the isolates and the mechanisms underlying their antimicrobial activity, while optimizing the culture medium for efficient production of potent antimicrobial compounds to combat infectious agents may further be investigated

The Perception of Faculty in the Implementation of ASEAN Qualification Assurance for Higher Education (AQAFHE)

This paper defines the conceptual knowledge of faculty members on the level of awareness on the AQAFHE descriptors, its influence to the mobility of professionals among Filipino in terms of: quality, flexibility, and, timelines, the State University and Colleges (SUC’s) priority to the requisite demands needed in the implementation, and the implications to the Philippine educational system. Seeking convergence in the diversity of standards in policies and transparent criteria in the ASEAN Qualification Framework poses challenges tall higher education system. The study design used the multi-dimensional perspectives of the respondents from the four (4) State Universities and Colleges in the National Capital Region based on the Five Dimensions of Perception: awareness, influence, reliability, priority, and agreement. The findings implied that implementation of the AQAFHE according to the 180 respondents reveal that faculty members are “Moderately Aware,” on the level of descriptor but considered “Very Influential” to improve the mobility of the professionals while “the role and functions of the implementing bodies such as CHED, TESDA, PRC, and DOLE were perceived as “Completely Reliable” in the process. The initiatives of the faculty members are expected and considered needed to meet the AQAFHE requirements across the State Universities and College despite the lack of resources as “High Priority,” to be able to adapt to the changing landscape in HEIs. Result highlights, “Continuing Professional development,” “review international policies”; “New accreditation levels,” Disparity of standards in the accreditation system, ““access to information system” and “curriculum development, must be given attention. All these connotes issues of quality assurance and funding to qualify for the accreditation system, ranking in the region and the world. Lastly, the implications of AQAFHE “harmonization and regionalization” as an effective pathway to educational reform,” is perceived by the faculty members as critical to be articulated in all higher education curriculum and instructions, faculty profile, student outcomes and assessment, and research and community network and partnership

The Coronavirus disease has resulted to people’s feeling of stress and depressive symptoms.  This study aims to identify how perceived stress in the current epochal crisis can yield to depressive symptom among PUP Academic Scholars. Specifically, it seeks to describe the stress level of the respondents, describe the severity of depression symptoms they manifest, and lastly, determine significant relationship between the stress level and depressive symptoms of the respondents. The study employed quantitative correlational method. Students came from Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and they were selected through simple random sampling. Tools in the study include the Perceived Stress Scale for assessing the respondents’ level of perceived scale and the Beck Depression Inventory-II for assessing their depressive symptoms.  Based on the results, the perceived stress level of the respondents has a mean of 28.80 and a standard deviation of 5.99 which is considered as High Level, while the level of depressive symptoms has a mean of 23.57 and a standard deviation of 11.39 which is considered as moderate. The Pearson Product Moment Coefficient Correlation was employed to determine the relationship between perceived stress and depressive symptoms. The study found that there is a significant positive relationship between perceived stress and depressive symptoms with .05 level of significance in a 2-tailed test. This means that as the perceived stress increases, the depressive symptom increases as well, which is a systematic direct relationship. In the end, recommendations are directed toward the university administration intervention programs and the PUP academic scholars for proactive responses

Sensory Evaluation of Developed Lolly Fruit (Sandoricum Koetjape) Sour Seasoning

In tropical areas, the santol tree is a fruit-bearing tree that can be seen growing everywhere. It spreads through pollination and seeds. This fruit is scrumptious and healthy. Additionally, many Filipinos may use it as a source of income. It is a big ornamental evergreen tree that is deciduous. It has a straight trunk, fissured bark that is greyish to pale pinkish-brown in color, and when wounded, it exudes milky latex. Acid sandy soil is suitable for growing it. Frost is utterly intolerable to the tree. The majority of the santol fruit tissues have a sub acid or sour taste. A sensory assessment of the dry, powdered lollipop fruit's acceptability as a souring additive on fish stew was done. There were some variations in the pieces' proximate makeup, physical and chemical characteristics, and nutritional composition. The fruit's largest component, the pulp, contained a high level of moisture and acidity that gradually decreased as the fruit ripened. The fresh and the dried, powdered lollipop fruits were comparable to one another in terms of color, scent, taste, and general acceptability as a souring ingredient for fish stew, according to the 9-point Hedonic sensory evaluation scale. The findings indicated that lollipop fruits have good physical-chemical characteristics and nutrient levels that are on par with or even greater than other conventional fruits used as souring agents. The powdered lollipop fruit has the potential to be used as a ready-to-use astringent in the home food supply

Biodiversity is the greatest treasure in the world. Protecting it means we are protecting the future of our children. The research study was conducted in Licuan-Baay, Abra, in the Philippines. It evaluated the abundance, endemism, species diversity index, and conservation status of trees within the interior and exterior areas of the selected mining site. Due to few studies on the biodiversity of its flora and fauna, this study was timely and necessary. Data were gathered using the belt transect method. The study revealed 34 species across 18 families, with Moraceae having the most number, with seven species and four genera. Based on the Shannon diversity index result, the mining areas have relatively little diversity. Additionally, endangered tree species are at 2.9 percent, while those that are vulnerable are at 11.76 percent. The tree species classified as least concerned were at 32.35 percent, and tree species that were data deficient were 52.94 percent based on the conservation classification under the IUCN 3.1 and DAO 2017. On endemism, there is 41 percent that is endemic, while 59 percent is not endemic in the Philippines
