The aim of this study is to examine the role of big five personality characteristics (Extraversion, Openness to change, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism) in predicting the innovative work behavior of teachers, with mediation of emotional labor. Self administered questionnaires were distributed to 350 teachers at public and private sector universities in Lahore. The study uses the spss 24 and structural equation modeling 24 to test the hypotheses among 350 respondents. The results specify that big five personality characteristics showed positive relationship with innovative work behavior while two characteristics of big five personality i.e. Extraversion and openness to change showed insignificant relationship with innovative work behavior through mediated effect of emotional labor. The other personality characteristics i.e. agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism were significantly related to innovative work behavior through mediated effect of emotional labor. Prior studies have recognized teachers as vital sources of innovation, thus managers can develop new emotional strategies to make their teachers free from psychological problems and to boost innovative work behavior among teachers in universities, a personality characteristics without a suspicion a critical contributor in making innovative teachers

    Get PDF
This study examines the impact of foreign direct investment on the domestic investment, trade, education, labor forces, and energy consumption in Bangladesh using annual time series data. It employs multivariate ordinary least square regression to find out the link between the variables. Multivariate OLS regression results show that FDI has a positive effect on the domestic investment, education, labor forces, and energy consumption in the country. It means that FDI assists the local investment, encourage education level, and energy consumption in promoting the economy. To explore the long-run relationship and cointegration between FDI and domestic investment, trade, and labor forces, the study uses Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach and Error Correction Model (ECM). Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test is used to check the stationarity of the variables. The ARDL model finds the long-run relation between FDI and domestic investment, trade, and labor forces in Bangladesh. So, the ARDL framework asserts that the variables move together in the long-run

A Monte Carlo Comparative Simulation Study for Identification of the Best Performing Panel Cointegration Tests

    Get PDF
In this paper the performance of nine panel cointegration tests, having the null hypothesis of no cointegration, with respect to weighted average rank scores under the whole space of alternative using Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out. Our results indicate that PdPtp, PAWS and PdP_V tests are the only three best performing tests among all panel cointegration tests whether time and cross sectional dimensions are small, medium or large. However, PDFTstar, PDFTrhostar and PdGtp panel cointegration tests have also identified as best performer at large cross sectional dimensions

Translingual Repertoires of Multilinguals in Academic Writing Practices

    Get PDF
The research investigates how students from diverse linguistic backgrounds project their multilingual repertories in their academic writing practices. The study has been built on the notion of heteroglossia by Bakthin (1975; 1981). This paper makes the case for translanguaging in the development of the writing skill of the learners for Academic purposes. This study analyzed written texts of 40 undergraduate bilingual learners from University of Sargodha, Lahore Campus who hail from different linguistic backgrounds and are struggling to learn writing in English for academic and professional success. Textual analysis has been used in order to identify the translingual strategies used by the learners in different stages of writings. The paper aims to identify how and why translanguaging is used. This study advocates for the multilingual resources of the students to be considered as a cognitive tool by educators for pedagogical strategies in teaching writing. It has been recommended that even in the development of monolingual voices in academic writing, a translanguaging approach can be considered as having more potential. Moreover, this study calls for attention towards the need of re-contextualization of the language policies in pedagogies that could employ the plurilingual recourses of the learners

    Get PDF
The present ethnographic study focused on the indigenous youth perception of ‘body image’ and diverse connotations associated with it. The research has highlighted gender differences observed in the defining of body image. A qualitative methodology of in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions were employed. The sample included late adolescents (aged 18-24) and early adults (24-34) from the area of Islamabad and Rawalpindi (Pakistan). Purposive sampling was applied and thematic analysis was used as qualitative paradigm. The number of respondents comprised of 15 male and 15 females, of which each 5 were gym-goers. According to the findings, the definition of body image by women was stated in the context of body perception and feelings, beautification, and idealized body image which leads to appearance dissatisfaction. It involved body presentation and impression individually and collectively, body type dichotomy and measurements, as well as personality reflected through dressing sense. It was defined by men as being muscular and having proportioned body, impression formation, heightened. It also involved body type dichotomies, ones gait, being slim and not bulky, dressing sense, and behavioral characteristics. Conclusively, being a part of collectivistic culture, emphasis on the expectations and opinions of the society was commonly identified in both gender responses regarding body image perception. For many it was a topic of appearance and impression formation, which further fed two attitudes: appearing good for oneself and for others around them. These feelings were produced under the influence of societal and media portrayal of ideal body image

Research on children affected by armed conflict and displacement demonstrates increased risk for multiple psychological consequences (Lustig et al., 2004) including PTSD, maladjustment, cognitive deficits and psychological distress (Barenbaum, 2004). The present research was planned to examine the mediating role of cognitive errors in the relationship between traumatic experiences and rejection feelings among internally displaced youth during operation Zarb e Azb. A sample of 300 young adolescents (boys = 244, Girls = 56) with an age ranging from 12 to 16 years (M= 15.27, SD=1.20) was taken from Karak, Bannu, and Peshawar districts of Pakistan. Stressful Life Events Scale (Rehna & Hanif, Unpublished), Children’s Negative Cognitive Errors Questionnaire (Leitenberg, Yost, & Carroll-Wilson, 1986), and Feelings of Rejection a subscale of School Children Problem Scale (Saleem & Mehmood, 2011) were administered on youth. Results showed that relationship between traumatic experiences and feelings of rejection was partially mediated by Catastrophizing (indirect effect = 0.01, Sobel t = 4.50, p<.00), Personalization (indirect effect = .01, Sobel t = 3.18, p<.00), selective abstraction (indirect effect = .01, Sobel t = 4.77, p<.00) and over generalization (indirect effect = .02, Sobel t = 5.34, p<.00). Findings have been discussed in theoretical as well as cultural perspectives

A Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis of Panel Stationarity Tests under a Single Framework

A unified framework, stringency criterion have been used to compare the six panel unit root tests having the null hypothesis of stationary and to find the best performer test/tests. Simulated critical values, instead of asymptotic critical values, have been used to keep the size of all tests around nominal size of 5%. Our findings suggest HD and HL tests as better performing tests as compared to other panel stationarity tests

Smoking and Human Health: Socio-economic Analysis

    Get PDF
Smoking causes a large number of diseases in human beings. About six million people die each year due to smoking, and predictions have shown that this number will increase to ten million in 2030. Pakistan has the highest consumption of tobacco in South Asia. Cross sectional data was used for study and it was collected through personal interviews of 175 respondents from different areas of Faisalabad, Punjab. Study focused on the determinants of smoking and its impact on the economy of households. Logistic regression model was used because the dependent variable is of dichotomous nature. The effects of smoking on the economy of household were measured by expenditures on diseases caused by smoking. The main determinants of smoking   included the presence of smokers in family and friend circle, low level of education and marital status. The results of underlying study revealed that smokers have had more diseases as compared with their counterparts and hence medical expenditures of smokers were found greater than those of non-smokers. In the light of study findings, we suggest that government should launch awareness programs to help smokers in quitting smoking. People need to know that if they stop smoking, they can save their smoking expenditures that will eventually be spent on basic needs and medical expenditures. Study data showed that the majority of smokers were unable to attribute reasons for unsuccessful quitting
