Analysis of Technical and Vocational Education Training Institute Learners’ English Language Skills Needs and the Instructional Modes Employed: Academic and Career Contexts
The main purpose of this study was to analyze the level of importance of the four English language macro skills needed by the undergraduate trainees at the Ethiopian Federal Technical and Vocational Education Training Institute. It also aimed to assess whether or not the instructional modes the trainers employed in teaching English suits the needs of trainees’ specific academic fields. The study employed descriptive design and two data collection tools, namely close-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview. By using simple random sampling technique, 80 trainees among second and third year trainees were selected and four Communicative English Language Skills course teachers took part. Moreover, 30 former graduates and 30 major course trainers were included using simple random sampling technique. The data collected through the questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively using SPSS version 20 and qualitative data was analyzed using thematic approach. The study showed that receptive skills were slightly found to be more important than productive skills in academic contexts. Specifically, though all macro skills are important, reading becomes the most needed skill by the trainees in both academic and occupational contexts. The study also revealed that there is a mismatch among the prescribed instructional approach, trainees’ preferred learning modes and instructional modes employed by the English trainers in the Federal TVET Institute (FTI)
Analyzing the Representational Aspect of Gender in Learning English as a Foreign Language: The Case of Grades 7 and 8 Students’ Textbooks in Ethiopian Context
The purpose of this study was to analyze the representational aspect of gender in learning English as a foreign language in the case of grade 7 and 8 students’ textbooks. The study used a descriptive survey research design involving a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative methods). To collect data, content analysis was primarily employed. The data were analyzed quantitatively using frequencies and percentages and qualitatively using narrations. The study found out that males occur with 59.8% but females with 40.2% in grade 7 students’ textbook, and males with 57.5% but females with 42.5% in grade 8 students’ English language textbook. Moreover, it was uncovered that males appear first with 67.3% and females with 32.7% in grade 7 students’ textbook, and males with 61.1% but females with 38.9% in grade 8 students’ conversational tasks in their textbook. Accordingly, it can be concluded that EFL students’ textbooks in the Ethiopian context dominantly embed males more than females both in representations and orders of occurrence as the major acting characters in dialogical situations. Thus, it is pedagogically implied that curriculum developers and textbook designers should harmoniously consider gender representation while designing learning materials
Productive Lesson Study towards Quality Professional Development for Science Teachers
The study was conceived as a professional development of teachers towards quality teaching using Lesson Study (LS) and Productive Pedagogies (PP) as a as a framework to plan for lessons and to reflect on classroom teaching. The aim of the study was to investigate the level of adoption by the teachers of both the LS and PP principles. The intention was to investigate the teachers’ experiences in such a professional development activity and identify the benefits and arising problems with a focus on their understanding of teaching and change in their practice. After the intervention, it was evident that teachers have gained some knowledge about their teaching and about their students. Nevertheless, there remain concerns about some of the issues in need for further work: deep and functional content knowledge; better connection between the different components of lessons; questioning techniques; and a variety of teaching methods that allow for greater student engagement at a higher level of thinking
Production of the Virgin Coconut Oil from Induced Fermentation with Lactic Acid Bacteria
Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a value-added coconut product with many applications in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can be employed to generate VCO through a fermentative process. Such a bacteria group can contribute to forming desirable sensory characteristics in the final product and its bioactivity. The present work aimed to isolate LAB strains from the natural fermentation of coconut cream and develop a process to produce VCO mediating by fermentation method. The highest oil yield at 25% (v/v) was obtained from the coconut meat and water mixture fermentation at the ratio of 1:2 with 10% (v/v) inoculum of M01strain sourced from pickle fermentation after 10 h at pH 5.5. The oil satisfied the requirements according to national standard TCVN 6311 and exhibited antibacterial activity against two food-borne pathogens, Salmonella and Shigella. This study proposed the production of coconut oil at a large scale that can substantially supply VCO to the food and cosmetic industry with remarkable benefits

Teaching Tertiary Physical Education in the New Normal: Gains, Drawbacks, and Suggestions
The difficulty on the current situation brought by the COVID-19 Pandemic around the globe resulted in the students' insufficient knowledge, most especially in Physical Education subjects. It happens as the closure of institutions, colleges, and universities are closed immediately. In the Philippines, there are studies concerning medical fields and other necessary fields on front in fighting with the virus; however, few chose to talk about the gains, drawbacks, and suggestions based on teachers teaching at the tertiary level. Hence, this research was realized, and it aimed to: identify the favorable experiences of Tertiary Physical Education Teachers; determine the problems and challenges of Tertiary Physical Education Teachers; and generate sensible and feasible suggestions from the research participants to further improve the delivery of tertiary Physical Education and Health courses amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. The data gathering method used was an In-Depth Interview. Research participants from selected schools in Cotabato Province in Mindanao, Philippines, were involved in an informal, unstructured, and open-ended type of interview to make the participants comfortable conceptualizing their thoughts and have the freedom to organize them into essential categories. In this paper, the tertiary physical education teachers have seen to cope with the fast-pacing new normal era and developed the character of resiliency. Thus, the tertiary physical education teachers have been creative than ever as they make the subject engaging despite the unfitted mode of teaching required for physical education. Moreover, conclusions and recommendations are based on the research findings
