    Get PDF
Aceh has archeological remains in the form of gravestones from several Islamic kingdoms that once stood there. One area that pretty much brings Islamic artifacts is the city of Banda Aceh. Some buildings during the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam are still firmly established, one of which is Masjid Baiturahmaan Banda Aceh. In addition to building heritage, the city of Banda Aceh turned out to have many burial complexes from the time of the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam. Tuan Di Kandang Cemetery Complex, Putri Ijo, Kings of Kampung Pande, and Tombs of the Bugis Dynasty Kings. The four cemetery complexes are cemeteries of the descendants of count of the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam. The existence of the cemetery complex there are located close to the shoreline now. Year 2004 Tsunami-affected Banda Aceh swallowed quite a lot of casualties. The existence of gravestones in the four complexes experienced significant damage. One of them is the position of the placement of the tombstones that have been turned by the brunt of the 2004 tsunami. In addition, due to the tsunami strikes, several tombstones around the Tuan Di Kandang Tomb complex, Raja Kampung Pande, Putri Ijo arose, and the Tombs of the Bugis Dynasty Kings. Some gravestones that emerged after the tsunami hit gave us new data sources regarding the existence of gravestones from the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam. In his writings, Daphne A. Johnson in the journal Reconceptualizing Cultural Identity and Its Role in Intercultural Business Communication (2007: 281-285) explained that identity has attributes. It then cause problems in the form of how the attributes are visible on the gravestones that arises after the 2004 tsunami and its relationship with the cemetery around. Based on the survey results of the study found that the presence of these gravestones have attributes similar to that of the four surrounding funeral complex and indirectly shows that there is a relationship with the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam

IMAGINING JAPANESE AS A MUSLIM: THE NARRATIVE OF NON-OPPOSITIONAL RELATIONS BETWEEN JAPANESE CULTURE AND ISLAMIC VALUES WITHIN MULIYATUN N.’S “AKATSUKI”

    Get PDF
Within the so many positive images of Japan produced and reproduced in Indonesia, there seems to be a convention to portray the relationship between Japanese culture and Islamic values as an oppositional one. This is evident in the depiction of the clash between the two in various stories of the Japanese Military Occupation Period in Indonesia, as well as in Indonesian Islamic literary works until the 2000s. However, through her Islamic-romantic novel “Akatsuki” (2009, 2012, 2017) Muliyatun N., by creating a story that entirely takes place in Japan and with all Japanese characters, depicts Japanese culture and Islamic values relations as non-oppositional and non-confrontational. This paper first describes the depiction of Japanese culture-Islamic values relations within “Akatsuki”. Furthermore, by considering contexts lingering the production of the novel, it analyzes how the “Akatsuki” marks the shift in Indonesian Muslim’s perception towards Japan in the decade of 2010s. My argument is that this shift is in line with the trends of creating a global and successful image of Muslims through literary works, and the recent development of the relationship between Japan and Islamic world

THE FORCE TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP; HOW ACTORS PLAY THEIR ROLES ON INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS IN SHAPING A NEGATIVE IMAGE OF SINGLE LATE MILLENNIAL IN INDONESIA

Indonesian people tend to involve themselves in other people’s business especially when it comes to their families or friends. With the influence of the New Media’s opinion on people’s relationship, this leads to the feeling of insecurity among Indonesian late millennials who are still single. The appearance of many memes and ‘cheesy’ photo captions have motivated Indonesia’s younger generations to get boyfriends or girlfriends so they can improve their self-esteem and pride by achieving something acceptable by the society standard constructed by the media. To make it worse, the impact of posting the memes and photographs on Social Network Media accounts has started the building a negative concept of relationship as an achievement for Indonesian late millennials. By applying Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory, I am motivated to break down the roles of each actor in shaping the Indonesian late millennials New Media users’ mind to be in a relationship immediately

In this paper I will only discuss Javanese law in relation to the underlying ethics; how Javanese law preserved the existing institutions in its society, and how the Javanese society formulated the violations of the law, in connection with ideals and ideas that are often deeply rooted, so as not to be unable or difficult to formulate by the Javanese society itself. The scope of the issues discussed in this paper is ethics in Javanese culture; especially regarding ethics in Javanese Law. Social control provides parameters, guidelines or norms about what is wrong and what is right, as well as what is normal and what is abnormal. In other words, social control is intended to prevent the behaviour of citizens from being too distorted, so as to ensure an integration of life in the society that is considered normal. The purpose of all that is to maintain a balance between stability and change

    SELF-PRESERVATION, AS SPINOZA’S PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW

    Get PDF
This article explicates Spinoza’s terms of self-preservation1 as his philosophical view in his book “Ethics”2 (published in 1677), written in a geometrical method. Generally, self-preservation refers to attention on the needs or desires of an individual self. The term self-preservation is often used simply to denote the attitude of caring about one’s own good. It is a view that human beings are always motivated by self-preservation, which is a necessity view of life. Spinoza has a broader view of the term. He identified self-preservation as the ultimate aim and proper motive of morality. His philosophical view of self-preservation is a more enlightened self-preservation, which shows that acting for one's own self-preservation can also serve others. Spinoza emphasized that the concepts of good, virtue, into perfection, have a ground in every human being, whilst evil is a condition in which virtue in ordinary people is still in its early unfoldment. Ordinary individuals tend not to undergo rigorous life and therefore they become preys for their passive emotions. According to Spinoza: evil actions are the result of ignorance. Therefore, he emphasized that individuals good potentials must be developed. The higher the individual understanding is, the more the individual has the power to propel himself from within, to enlighten himself, but also to help and bring happiness to others. He argued that an individual’s goodness will inspire others to achieve contenment. The difference of self-preservation term with other philosophical views of it can be observed through his propositions in his “Ethics”. Spinoza’s understanding of the importance of self-preservation, by improving one’s rational ability, is an exclusive view in his era, and can still be an inspiration to individuals today
