PANTHAY AND ROHINGYA: DEALING WITH CITIZENTSHIP IN MYANMAR

Neither ethnic and religious background nor historical root could likely explain the fact that most Panthay have been granted Burmese citizenship while the Rohingya have not. Both groups are not adhering to the majority‟s religion nor belong to the major ethnic groups. Also, their ancestors were not considered native nor settled in Myanmar before British colonization. This fact triggers question of how these similarities resulted in different outcomes. Therefore, this paper attempts to explain this issue of citizenship by looking at resistance shown by Rohingya and Panthay. This paper argues that different forms of resistance contribute to the denial of Rohingya citizenship but inclusion of the Panthay

FEMINIST APPROACH AS AN OPTION IN CONTENDING ECONOMIC RECESSION: HUSBAND FOR HIRE TELENOVELA AS PARADIGM

One of the challenges that has bedevilled today's society, is the total relegation of women to the background in the scheme of things. This is also reflected in films. Feminist scholars, critics and women's movements have relentlessly challenged the stereotypical representations of women in films all over the world, criticizing their depictions as subordinates, emotional cripples, sex-starved spinsters, housewives and psychotics. Despite the efforts to locate a lasting solution, the discrimination still lingers on. The contributions of women towards development in every society if given a more collaborative inclusive environment are immense. This is even so, especially in recent times that call for desperate measures to ending the global economic recession. It is against this backdrop that this study intends to identify how some films are helping or have helped in the redirection and construction of the gender roles of women that will lead to alleviating the economic recession, using the Telenovela, Husband for Hire. The study adopts the qualitative method of research using content analysis to identify how these films have redefined the position and roles of women as well as their capabilities. The findings of the study revealed that films are potent tools for creating and reinforcing images of reality and gender roles that can help in the solutions required for curbing the recent economic recession. Hence, it was recommended that there is the need for reconstruction of content to achieve better portrayals of women and to highlight hard-work as well as the creation of films that reinforce ‘less ego' for men and a more collaborative inclusive environment for women to foster better development

BETWEEN CULTURE AND POLITICS IN NIGERIA: POWER, IDENTITY AND DEMOCRATIC REFLECTIONS IN TUNDE KELANI’S FILMS

Tunde Kelani is, unarguably, one of the most dominant and resonant voices in the Nigerian film industry. His films pungently reflect an in-depth understanding of the complexities and dynamics of the diverse experiences of culture, arts and politics, religion and development issues that define Nigeria as a nation. Significantly, he is a passionate and committed artist whose works engage critical issues that espouse the African experience at the arena of politics as the continent contends with all the vestiges of slavery and colonization. Employing the contextual and critical methods of scholarly enquiry, this paper interrogates the issues of politics, power-play and ideo-social identity in contemporary Nigeria through a close viewing/reading of Tunde Kelani’s Saworo Ide, Agogo Eewo and Arugba. These films are investigated as direct and explicit portraitures of the Nigerian experience in the 20thCentury and beyond. Using Yoruba sub-group as a template, the films undertake a deconstruction of Nigerian political landscape through a critical re-reading of its history and suggest a cultural solution to the lingering political dilemmas in the nation

This study examines the extent to which the Nigerian journalists comply with ethical values in the course of their reportage. Two national dailies – The Nation and Daily Trust newspapers were selected for content analysis, using systematic random sampling technique to pick 26 editions per newspaper. A period of six months from 14 December 2014 to 14 June, 2015, covering the 4th phase of the state of emergency was chosen. Tables, figures, and sample percentage counts were employed in making the research data easily understandable. The findings revealed that though the newspapers appeared to be ethically compliant in their reportage, none of the two newspapers was neutral in its reportage of the state of emergency rule. Majority of their stories were considered unpleasant and capable of aggravating the crisis in the troubled states. The hypothesis were tested, one showed that there is a significant difference between the number of news stories and the number of ethical breaches in the selected newspapers; hypothesis two showed a significant difference between ethically breaching and ethically standard reports/content of the selected newspapers; hypothesis three showed a significant difference between the ethical breaching of Daily Trust and those of The Nation –X2 = 0.09; P<0.05, df1. The study therefore, recommends that journalists should always have a healthy regard for the public interest, desist from slavish adulation and join hands with the government in bringing about lasting peace to the troubled states and desist from publishing inflammatory stories

Literature on Transnationalism is very much influenced by references which depict transnationalism issue as a threat. Various discussion on transnationalism is very often connected to issues of radicalism, terrorism, criminality, global warming and others which have negative nuance. It is due to these references that the understanding of transnationalism is directed as a dangerous and threatening concept. This study raises the phenomenon of a Turkish Islamic movement known as the Sulaimaniyah Group, run by some Turkish muslim youths in various areas in Indonesia since 2005. By using qualitative approach, this study aims at elaborating more deeply the motivation of the Turkish youths in leaving their homeland and conducting transnationalism activities in Indonesia. In addition, the study also wants to know how their presence is perceived by Indonesian societies. The qualitative data is mainly obtained through observations in some Sulaimaniyah Boarding Schools in Jakarta areas and the surrounding, as well as through deep interviews with the activists and students of the Schools. Research findings indicate that the presence of Sulaimaniyah Group in Indonesia shows the Turkish identity presentation built by a construction that involves historical understanding and response towards globalization

JUN TAKAMI`S “SHOMINZOKU” AND AMBIGUOUS CRITICISM OF THE GREATER EAST-ASIA CO-PROSPERITY SPHERE

Although Japanese writers who experienced living in Indonesia in 1940-1945 witnessed the issue of racial disparity as the reality of a European colony, they were unable to depict it sufficiently because they were expected to portray a peaceful coexistence between Japanese and Southeast Asian peoples as the ideal picture of the Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. This paper explores the possibility of evaluating literary works written under the notion of the Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere by analyzing Jun Takami`s short story “Shominzoku” (July 1941) using Marie Louise Pratt`s “contact zone” as analytical tool. “Shominzoku” poses the problem of Japanese positioning in European colony; of how the protagonist sees himself and others, and how he wants to be seen by other races. Examining the narrative technique of the story to view Japanese positioning in the Netherlands East Indies, this paper argues that although “Shominzoku” can be evaluated as a criticism towards the notion of Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, it is actually an ambiguous work due to a reflection of the persisting idea that Japanese is, indeed, a superior race

BOOK AS A COMMUNICATION MEDIUM: USING BARCLAYS AYAKOROMA’S DANCE ON THE GRAVE TO DISCUSS SALIENT GENDER ISSUES

Book is an effective communication tool that can be used to achieve different purposes, including gender equality; it is a complimentary medium to the mainstream media. Gender ine-quity is prevalent in the society, and this exposes women to a lot of discrimination that widens the dichotomy between them and their male counterparts, and invariably prevents the women-folk from participating and playing vital and supportive roles in developing the society. The agitation for gender equality and advocacy for women liberation is being carried out through various fronts, including books written in form of Drama, which is a very formidable force and a transformer of society; drama being a useful tool in national discourse and social commentary. Consequently, this study looked at Barclays Ayakoroma`s play (book), Dance on the grave, a drama that focuses on women`s agitation for a voice and equality with men in the society. This research work is anchored on the Muted Group Theory (MGT); and in order to pick and analyse the burning gender issues raised in the play, review and textual analyses were used as the qualitative research methods. In conclusion, this paper submitted that women are endowed with a lot of potentials that can contribute to the development of the society if they are not discriminated against, but that women must develop themselves in all aspects of life. It recommended, among others, that women should be protected from all forms of gender-based violence, and that more books that highlight the ills against women in the society should be written
