This article attempts to describe the maritime-based culture on social interactions in Waduri and Wakalingkuma Village, Kaledupa District, Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, in 1960-1990. People of these villages used to be sailor communities who used bhangka and soppe boats for their sailing activities. The boats were created by both villagers themselves. In every boat making process, they were always involved an elder as a leader on certain rituals that needed. These social-cultural pattern slowly disappeared along with the decline of traditional-based sailing activities in the mid-1980s. This article contained a description of how the community responds these changes by switching to farmer activities or deciding to leave their island to find a living in another land. REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE MENTAL ILL HEALTH IN THE AFRICAN NOVEL

This study examines the depiction of female mental ill health in selected African novels. We intend to explore some causes and manifestations of, as well as responses to women’s emotional disorders. Through the prism of psychoanalytical feminism, our paper identifies those socio-cultural and environmental factors that are drivers of female mental ailments as represented in Mariama Ba’s So Long a Letter and Scarlet Song, Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions, Chris Abani’s Becoming Abigail, Nawal El Saadawi’s Women at Point Zero, and Sindiwe Magona’s Beauty’s Gift. A close reading of these selected African novels reveals that the predominantly patriarchal nature of many African cultures enable and promote gender relationships that act as stressors to women’s psychological welfare. That this paper focuses on an often ignored or glossed over, but very important, aspect of African women’s existential reality is one of its strengths. It concludes that there is a need to give priority attention to the festering epidemic of female mental illness in African societies in order to attain more holistic outcomes for individual, gender and social well-being.KEYWORDS: Female Mental Health, African Novel, Medical Humanities, Psychoanalytic Feminism

BATTLE OF CULTURES: TRANSLATING FIGURATIVE INSULTS IN REMY SYLADO’S CA-BAU-KAN

Translating figurative insults is one of the challenging features of literary translation because these expressions are often culture-bound and produce specific effect. This study seeks to propose a translation produced using predominantly foreignizing approach in an attempt to preserve the original effects, connotations, and nuances of the source text and to examine the extent to which foreignization and domestication can work together when used to deal with certain text types. The source text is taken from Remy Sylado’s novel Ca-Bau-Kan: Hanya Sebuah Dosa, particularly figurative verbal insults between several characters because of their offensive and hilarious double-effect unique to the Betawi culture of Indonesia. Analysis found 9 non-substitutions, 14 partial substitutions, and 7 total substitutions of figurative images, which reflects the translator’s foreignizing tendency. However, there are also some domesticating strategies in order to avoid gross awkwardness and/or loss of effect due to target language constraints and the connotative neutrality of perfect literal equivalents. This study demonstrates that the foreignization approach can be applied with little domestication when the source text shows high originality and the target language has the right linguistic devices to accommodate it.KEYWORDS: Culture, Trnaslating, Remy Sylado, Ca-Bau-Ka

Human traffic flow in Indonesia is increasing due to various available facilities. As a result, more foreigners come to work in Indonesia. The presence of foreign workers then requires supervision so that they do not threaten the resilience of the Indonesian people. This paper aims to analyze the intelligence analysis process carried out by the Foreigner Supervision Unit of the Tangerang Police Satintelkam while supervising foreign workers at PT. CGC Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method to collect data from a literature study. The analysis uses descriptive qualitative analysis and qualitative comparative analysis. The results show that foreign workers provide two main threats to regional resilience, especially in the economic sector, namely (1) the locals can lose their livelihoods because foreigners carry out too many economic activities; and (2) the locals can lose the opportunities to occupy important positions at work because the foreigners already fill the positions. This situation reflects the importance of intelligence monitoring by the Tangerang Police Intelligence unit. The monitoring is carried out with several institutions under the Foreigner Supervision Unit (Timpora). Supervision is conducted administratively through coordination, on-site supervision, open intelligence, and closed intelligence. Immigration intelligence plays a role in the early detection of foreigners' threats, including the disruption of territorial security caused by foreign workers with illegal permits.KEYWORDS: intelligence analysis, Foreigner Supervision Unit, Tangerang Police Intelligence and Security Unit, Supervision of Foreign Workers, regional security threa
