The Presence of Absence. Transgenerational Local Memory of the Holocaust Among Hungarians

The paper reports on the results of a non-representative focus group research aimed at exploring the local memory of the Holocaust in Hungary. The research took place between 2021 and 2024, almost 80 years after the events of 1944, at the historical moment when communicative memory is transforming into cultural memory. The sites of the research were villages, small and medium-sized towns, and the capital, precisely those scenes where the drama of the Holocaust took place in the summer of 1944. The results of the research showed that the Jews disappeared, but signs of their former presence remained. The traces of past Jewish life, however, became increasingly obscured over time in the minds of the successive generations. The paper reports on the results of a non-representative focus group research aimed at exploring the local memory of the Holocaust in Hungary. A new partnership framework for education with geoparks at its core: a proposal through the evaluation of the school education program in Shikaoi, Japan

The primary objectives of geoparks are to conserve geoheritage, enhance public awareness and understanding of geoscience, and drive sustainable economic growth in local communities. Education acts as the cornerstone in achieving these three objectives, as it provides the necessary foundation for their realization. This study proposes a new educational framework to promote the sustainable development of geoparks by evaluating the effecacy of the past geoeducation program. Specifically, this study focused on the Tokachi-Shikaoi Geopark and Hokkaido Shikaoi High School. A mixed methodology was employed, including content analysis of the textbooks, online questionnaire surveys of high school students, and field interviews with key informants. The results revealed that while geoeducation with well-prepared textbooks was encouraged in schools in Shikaoi Town until 2018, there is a need to revitalize geopark education in an alternative way for the future. We proposed a new partnership framework for the educational program among the  geopark, universities, elementary, junior high, and high schools, and other stakeholders to maximize the geopark resources in the proposed program through the effective use of existing textbook assets. The results of the questionnaire surveys found that not only indoor learning with textbooks, but also outdoor learning at geosites is important. The results of the interview survey suggested the need to offer training and support for schoolteachers. To address budget constraints, this study proposed the inclusion of support from universities and the introduction of e-textbooks featuring geopark-related knowledge. This study highlights the crucial role of education in promoting sustainable development in Tokachi-Shikaoi Geopark. The insights gained have broader implications for education in other geoparks, offering valuable guidance for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of education in geoparks

IMPROVING PET SCANNER TIME-OF-FLIGHTRESOLUTION USING ADDITIONAL PROMPT PHOTON

Positronium Imaging requires two classes of events: double-coincidences originated from pair ofback-to-back annihilation photons and triple-coincidences comprised with two annihilation photonsand one additional prompt photon. The standard reconstruction of the emission position along theline-of-response of triple-coincidence event is the same as in the case of double-coincidence event;an information introduced by the high-energetic prompt photon is ignored. In this study, we proposeto extend the reconstruction of position of triple-coincidence event by taking into account the timeand position of prompt photon. We incorporate the knowledge about the positronium lifetime distributionand discuss the limitations of the method based on the simulation data. We highlight that theuncertainty of the estimate provided by prompt photon alone is much higher than the standard deviationestimated based on two annihilation photons. We finally demonstrate the extent of resolutionimprovement that can be obtained when estimated using three photons

A NETWORK-BASED COMPUTATIONALPIPELINE TO STUDY THE VARIABILITY OFTRANSCRIPTOME PROFILES FOR HUMANDISEASES

Machine learning applications to high-throughput data in medicine – one of thebiggest resource for understanding complex disease – so far have been limited. Here we present a computational approach for assessing the intrinsic variabilityin the most prominent data type, transcriptomics data for disease cohorts. Ourstudy looks at situations, where multiple datasets for the same disease areavailable. We leverage concepts of network medicine to assess, how the matchbetween a biological network and a set of differentially expressed genes variesacross different networks and experiments. Our results show that differentbiological networks yield markedly different results. Also, the clustering ofdiseases depends strongly on the choice of parameters contained in the dataanalysis and network processing

Writing skills in Polish as a second language in students with migration experience in Polish schools – context and theoretical review

    No full text
The article presents a literature‑based review and identifies the principal challenges involved in fostering writing proficiency in Polish as a second language among upper‑secondary students with migration experience. The introductory section delineates the scale and dynamics of recent migration to Poland, paying particular attention to its repercussions for the school system. The subsequent theoretical section clarifies key constructs—Polish as a second language, the language of schooling (Język Edukacji Szkolnej, JES), and Cummins’s BICS/CALP model—underscoring the stringent linguistic demands that JES imposes on learners’ writing development. Later sections synthesise current research on writing and document the specific obstacles faced by migrant students, including cross‑linguistic interference, limited access to genre‑appropriate models, and assessment practices that insufficiently accommodate their linguistic profiles. The article concludes with practice‑oriented recommendations for educators and researchers and calls for further empirical studies aimed at devising effective instructional and systemic solutions

Can embracing contradictory moral principles be a cure for political polarization? Jonathan Haidt\u27s Moral Foundations Theory.

    No full text
Esej analizuje Teorię Fundamentów Moralnych (MFT) Jonathana Haidta i jej zastosowanie do wyjaśnienia polaryzacji politycznej. Mimo wielu zastrzeżeń teoretycznych i metodologicznych do MFT, pozostaje ona wpływowym modelem wyjaśniającym różnice ideologiczne i polityczne. The essay analyzes Jonathan Haidt\u27s Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) and its application in explaining political polarization. It discusses the three main principles of morality and the six universal moral foundations proposed by Haidt, as well as the controversial claim that the political right draws on a broader range of innate moral intuitions. Despite numerous theoretical and methodological objections to MFT, it remains an influential model for explaining ideological and political differences. At first glance, MFT leads to pessimistic conclusions that rational arguments have little significance and do not reduce worldview divisions. However, awareness of universal cognitive limitations and diverse moral matrices is undoubtedly a valuable perspective that expands the possibilities for social depolarization

The impact of macroeconomic measures on the valuation of listed equity in the US. Insights from high inflation periods

    No full text
While the relationship between stock prices and macroeconomic indicators in the US has been widely examined, conflicting findings in the empirical literature suggest the presence of nonlinear dynamics that remain insufficiently explored. Following the work of A. López-Villavicencio and V. Mignon (2011), and A. Brick and D. Nautz (2008), inflation rates above a threshold level of 3% to 5% are associated with significant adverse effects on economic stability and stock market volatility. Therefore, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding the interactions between macroeconomic measures and stock prices during periods of elevated inflation, focusing on potential threshold effects. This study examines these relationships using monthly data from August 1973 to August 1982, representing High-Inflation Period 1, and from January 2021 to June 2024, representing High-Inflation Period 2. The analysis compares the direction and magnitude of the relationships across both periods. The results confirm that hedging against price level increases is a stronger determinant than withdrawal from capital markets due to heightened uncertainty caused by rising inflation rates, which would otherwise lead to declining stock prices. Additionally, the results highlight a strategic shift in US monetary policy, leading to better-anchored inflation expectations. The analysis also indicates that industrial production has become a less reliable proxy for economic activity in recent years, reflecting the US economy’s transition towards a service-oriented structure. Overall, the observed cointegration between stock prices and macroeconomic variables challenges the assumptions of the Efficient Market Hypothesis

Influence of Selected Corrosive Environment on the Scale Formation in Selected Materials Manufactured by Directed Energy Deposition 3D Printing Technology

Additive technologies, and in particular Directed Energy Deposition (DED), are becoming an increasingly important tool for the rapid production of components operating in, among others, the energy, aviation, petrochemical industries, where components are exposed to extreme thermochemical conditions. In the article, the influence of various corrosive atmospheres atmospheric air, water vapor and SO₂-argon- mixture – on the process of scale formation on the surface of materials manufactured using Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology is presented. The tests were carried out at a temperature of 600°C (for air and water vapor) and 300°C (for SO₂-argon atmosphere). The mass increase and surface damage was monitored. It has been shown that the chemical composition of materials, especially the content of alloying elements such as Cr and Ni, is crucial for corrosion resistance. The obtained results provide the basis for further optimization of the composition of powders used in additive manufacturing techniques, in terms of operating conditions in aggressive environments
