Conflicts between groups in Indonesia continue to occur, and diverse studies have attempted to find solutions. As one of the efforts to find these solutions, this research focuses on national identity development as a long-term effort to establish an inclusive national identity to reduce conflict between groups. This study aimed to provide an overview of the national identity development process implemented in public and private elementary schools. The data collection methods employed were observation, interviews, and document analysis. Coding analysis is applied to sort the data and generate themes for the findings. The empirical findings and discussion generate the following conclusions: First, efforts to develop a national identity in public and private elementary schools run comprehensively through cognitive aspects (thoughts, understanding, and principles), affective aspects (attitudes and appreciation), and behavioral aspects (actions and habits). These three aspects are well implemented in the school’s vision, curriculum, subject matter, learning process, non-academic activities, and social life. Second, there are kinds of national identities such as national symbols, religious identity, ethnic identity, and environmental identity. However, national identity and religious identity are boldly emphasized. This is to anticipate the tension between national identity and religious identity, which might stimulate conflict between identities. Therefore, national and religious identities are socialized as two unified identities. Finally, the success rate of the development of national identity in schools varies due to various factors. However, this is a prospect for further research, especially in schools, families, and society

The Recent Traditionalist Turn in Indonesian Islam After Conservatives: How its Engagement towards Urban Muslims

    No full text
The recent Indonesian Islamic wave in Indonesia appears to be inclined towards a traditionalist turn. This turn specifically denotes the ascendancy of traditional Islamic teachings as the forefront in Indonesia. The resurgence of traditionalism has consequently led to a decline in the influence of conservatives, that has dominated public preferences from the 2000s to early 2014. While these new waves are likely to persist due to strong government support for religious moderation programs. They provoke both favorable and unfavorable perspectives among urban Muslims. In light of this contentious stance, this paper seeks to explore why urban Muslims display a reluctance towards the traditionalist shift. To address this inquiry, the research employs critical discourse analysis based on literature reviews. The primary finding of this discussion is that as the traditionalist movement extends its influence into urban environments, urban Muslims communities tend to align themselves with conservative ideologies. This poses a challenge for traditionalists aiming to alter religious preferences in urban areas

The Educational Axiology of Al-Maqbul Traditional Pesantren

This study is prompted by criticism to the educational activities undertaken by Islamic educational institutions for adopting Western educational axiology. On the contrary, as a reputable school, Pesantren Al-Maqbul refuses to make transformation into a modern one, and still preserves the traditional education system. This study aims to explore the reasons Pesantren Al-Maqbul maintains the traditional education system with perspective of educational axiology. This study answers the research qustions about what are the ethical and aesthetic values at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul?, and what are the education purposes at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul?. This study uses a qualitative approach that seeks to describe data from the field and literature related to the axiology of traditional pesantren education. Observation, interview and documentation techniques were used to obtain data related to the discussion, which were then analyzed. This research resulted in findings, namely: (1) The reasons for the Pesantren Al-Maqbul to maintain the traditional education system cannot be separated from the axiological construction of its education; (2) The influence of the axiological basis of education can be identified from the tendency of normative values, namely being bound by Islamic provisions in the aesthetics of education at Pesantren Al-Maqbul; (3) The tendency of akhlāq at-Ṭā'ah (obedience ethics) and akhlāq al-Fanā' (illuminative ethics) is found in educational ethics at Pesantren Al-Maqbul; (4) The aim of education at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul is to study Islamic religious knowledge (tafaqquh fi al-din). There is no space for general knowledge (science) to be studied at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul

Fasad Timpanum Bangsal Tosan Mangkunegaran Menepis Spekulasi Apropriasi Religi

This research aims to answer a puzzle that has remained unanswered for decades due to the disconnection of oral stories about the facade structure of Bangsal Tosan at Pendopo Ageng Mangkunegaran Palace. This article aims to examine the appearance of the facade structure and the ornaments on it, in relation to the speculation of religious appropriation in the facade structure. The descriptive method within the constructivism paradigm is applied based on the findings of data deemed adequate for the formation of a clarificative narrative about the structure. It is called clarificative because it is an explanation of why there is a triangular structure (timpanum) and a Western-style relief on the facade, both of which are not commonly found in traditional Javanese buildings. This research produces a narrative explanation that the timpanum facade and Western-style reliefs on Pendopo Ageng of Mangkunegaran Palace were made during the time of K.G.P.A.A. Mangkunagara IV and named Bangsal Tosan. Although Western in style, the facade and ornaments are symbols of Javanese culture such as panembarama (greeting), acknowledgement of supernatural powers, and hopes for prosperity. The spectacular palace art structure is interpreted as the emergence of secular high fashion, a statement of the Mangkunegaran Palace's identity as the palace of an important person (pangeran) but not a king. This finding has the potential to change or otherwise enrich theories about the sacredness of palace buildings. Instead of practising strict and obedient social religious practices, Mangkunagara IV innovated the Tosan Ward in the Mangkunegaran Palace

This present study seeks to examine these traditions through an Islamic lens. The research methodology employed was qualitative, with observation of cultural events and practices, and analysis of relevant literature as primary data collection and the support data will involve unstructured interviews with community members. The findings of the study reveal that the Malay Kampar people's Aghi Ghayo Onam tradition is deeply intertwined with their cultural practices. Islamic teachings inform their daily lives, including their clothing, food, and social interactions in the tradition. The community also places great importance on maintaining its cultural identity through its traditional food, which is characterized by vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and the spices of the authentic local food. The study concludes that an understanding of these traditions is essential for promoting interfaith dialogue and cultural understanding in a diverse society

Ahmadiyya Congregation in the Shadow of Religious Politics: Tensions Between Law and Freedom of Religion

    No full text
The right to freedom of religion is a fundamental right. For Indonesian people, religion is not only seen as a ritual but also as a part of the social relations between society members and the state. However, the sacred value of religion in social relations is degraded through normative recognition in the form of official religious politics. The policy does not actually engender order and justice. On the contrary, official religious political policies and restrictions on religious freedom raise widespread discriminatory practices that affect religious minority groups, such as the Indonesian Ahmadiyya Community. The purpose of this study is to examine the tension between the law and the right to freedom of religion or belief in cases of discrimination against the Ahmadiyya Community of Indonesia from the point of view of the legal theory of legal disorder. The research methods used are socio-legal with a statutory approach, a conceptual approach, and a critical legal study approach using legal disorder theory. This research emphasizes that the Ahmadiyya, as a sect in Islam, has the right to freedom of religion within the Forum Internum. In practice, the official religious politics subordinated the rights of religious freedom under the control of religious majoritarianism. However, empirical facts show that the multireligious social context of Indonesian society places the situation in a state of irregularity. Through the disorder of law theory, Sampford opens the horizons of the legal paradigm, showing that seeing and answering various irregularities cannot be done through the lens of order
