Harmonisasi Doktrin Tasawuf dan Al-Qur’an dalam Kitāb al-‘Ishq
The tendency to bring Sufism closer to the main sources of Shari'a in Indonesian contexts began in the 17th century. One manuscript that strongly indicates this phenomenon is the Kitāb al-'Ishq (The Nature of Jamāl and Jalāl), DS 0012 00001, a Sufism text from the Kuningan area which is thought to have been written in the 18th–19th centuries. This philological study aims to reveal how Kitāb al-'Ishq contributed to promoting philosophical Sufism, in this case the doctrine of Nūr Muḥammad, which in fact is part of the doctrine of Martabat Tujuh. This study shows that Kitāb al-'Ishq has at least two important contributions. First, Kitāb al-'Ishq contributes to showing the harmony of Nūr Muḥammad's doctrine with the Shari'a, namely by providing a number of Qur'ānī arguments. From a number of arguments presented, it appears that this text is still connected to the thoughts of several previous Middle Eastern Sufi figures, such as Saḥl al-Tustarī, al-Qushayrī and 'Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī. Second, Kitāb al-'Ishq shows the author's efforts to ground his doctrine, namely by using metaphors and analogies that are popular among Indonesian people in explaining the concept of Nūr Muḥammad with the aim of making it easy to digest and acceptable. Its position in Kuningan proves that in the Indonesian context, the tendency to harmonize Sufism with the Al-Qur'an and Hadith does not only occur in the Sumatra region, but also in West Java
Between Sympathy and Hostility: Acehnese Attitudes towards Rohingya Refugees
This research seeks to explore the perspectives of the Acehnese community regarding Rohingya refugees, emphasizing the contrast between compassion and animosity. The study utilizes a content analysis approach, drawing on secondary data from local Acehnese online media and relevant literature concerning refugee matters in Indonesia from 2022 to 2024.The findings reveal two predominant perspectives: sympathy driven by humanitarian compassion and Islamic solidarity, and hostility arising from concerns over socio-economic burdens and anti-immigrant sentiments. Sympathy is reflected in calls for aiding war victims, while hostility is linked to fears of resource competition and cultural tensions. The implications of this research are twofold. First, it highlights the necessity for culturally sensitive interventions to address misconceptions and fears that foster hostility. Second, it emphasizes the importance of public education campaigns and community engagement to strengthen values of compassion and solidarity. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and humanitarian organizations to develop strategies that balance humanitarian assistance with sustainable socio-economic policies, ensuring harmonious coexistence between host communities and refugees
Implementation of Change Management in Shaping Student Character in the MAPK Program at MAN 1 Yogyakarta
This article discusses the implementation of change management in character education at MAN 1 Yogyakarta, focusing on developing skilled individuals with leadership qualities and the ability to tackle global competition challenges. In the current evolving landscape, where global competition has intensified, students in Indonesia are facing demanding requirements. This research is a case study using a qualitative descriptive method. Besides academic excellence, students also need to possess "soft skills" and "hard skills" that are essential for keeping up with the times. Soft skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork are crucial in a collaborative work environment. On the other hand, hard skills such as technological proficiency and foreign language skills provide the necessary competitive advantage. To meet these demands, Indonesian education needs to focus on developing both foundational aspects and specific expertise. MAN 1 Yogyakarta recognizes this need and has taken steps to prepare its students according to the required standards of change. They implement programs such as basic leadership training (LDK) and establish a special student organization called OSAKA (Organisasi Siswa Madrasah Aliyah Program Keagamaan) to enhance students' leadership skills, discipline, and sense of responsibility. This activity is a flagship program aimed at enhancing students' abilities in communication, discipline, and leadership. There are also by participating in clubs and organizations such as the Intra-School Student Organization (OSIS), Indonesian Red Cross Youth (PMR), Islamic Spiritual (ROHIS), Scouts, and scientific clubs, students also learn the importance of responsibility and discipline in fulfilling their roles within these organizations
Warisan Tak Tergantikan: Mengapa Ebeg Purbalingga Perlu Dilestarikan?
Traditional art is an irreplaceable heritage because it contains various noble values, identity markers, and means of connecting with the divine. However, maintaining this heritage is not easy so that it tends to be abandoned by its heirs. This study traces the reasons for maintaining traditional folk art in society by taking the case of Ebeg performing arts in Purbalingga Regency. This study analyzes the social interaction behind the preservation of Ebeg art using the theory of symbolic interactionism which looks at the meaning of symbols given by society to the art to influence its preservation. Data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and document reviews, which were then analyzed hermeneutically. The results of the study revealed that Ebeg performing arts actually contain noble values aligned with religious education, such as faith, brotherhood, moderation, and patriotism. The inheritance of Ebeg art on the one hand has been supported by The Purbalingga Regency Government in the form of funding and various preservation initiatives. On the other hand, the inheritance of this art is hampered by the perception of illegality, assumptions of negative influences, lack of financial support from the public, poor public understanding, lack of human resources and infrastructure, as well as a decline in art lovers. The results of this study imply that traditional arts require more than government alone. More than that, the community that supports them must be aware of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. One effort to increase awareness is by the harmony between traditional arts and the noble values of religion, and this emphasizes the novelty of the article
Hegemoni “Agama Resmi” Dan Ambiguitas Kebebasan Berkeyakinan Penghayat Sapta Darma Di Jember, Jawa Timur
Violations of freedom of religion or belief continue to pose significant challenges to interfaith cooperation. Adherents of indigenous beliefs frequently experience such violations despite the legal and formal guarantees of their religious rights. Believers, as a minority group, are often marginalized and subjected to restrictions, even though their identity is recognized by Constitutional Court Decision Number 97/PUU-XIV/2016. This article examines the hegemonic relationship between "official religion" and adherents of indigenous belief, as well as its impact on the freedom of belief in Sukoreno Village, Jember. The study looks into the practice of hegemony and its implications on the violations of freedom of belief experienced by Sapta Darma Believers. The originality of this research lies in its focus on hegemonic relations through socio-cultural mechanisms. A qualitative methodology is implemented to investigate the disparities in social relations from the standpoint of Sapta Darma believers. Data collection is conducted through semi-structured interviews, supplemented by direct observation to contextualize and comprehend the social practices of interfaith life. The exercise of hegemony include: 1) internalization of Islamic practices within the Sapta Darma community, 2) restriction on certain activities, as well as 3) oversight and regulation concerning permits for the believers. Findings indicate hegemony in the interactions between Muslims and Sapta Darma believers through socio-cultural mechanisms. Although social relations between Muslims and the adherents appear harmonious and peaceful, the potential for violations of religious freedom persists due to the dynamics of majority-minority relations. The believers are compelled to adhere to detrimental policies to sustain harmony and preserve the image of Sukoreno 'Pancasila' Village. The hegemony of the dominant official religion over Sapta Darma belivers engenders ambiguity concerning religious freedom
Pengaruh Alkitab terhadap Natal dan Implikasi Realitas Bisnis di Indonesia
Christians believe that Christmas is a season to glorify the birth of Jesus Christ. However, the Christmas celebration is an issue intertwined with business realities. Researchers argue that the influence of the Bible intersects with Christmas. Nevertheless, some people use Christmas as a field to implement businesses that seek huge profits for personal satisfaction, thus creating social problems on the other side. This research aimed to analyze the Bible’s influence at Christmas and its implications for business realities in Indonesia. This research used a qualitative research method based on a literature review from a sociology of religion perspective. Researchers used scientific articles, proceedings, and books related to the research variables. This research showed that the Bible does influence Christmas. However, the Christmas atmosphere has implications for business realities that give rise to the spirit of capitalism. In this case, the social problems that occur are pressure and suffering. In essence, Christians reconstruct and rethink the nature and meaning of Jesus Christ’s birth in the Bible. Researchers provide scientific solutions, namely the actualization of celebrating Christmas humanistically in Indonesia
Construction of Religious Habitus In Indonesian Islamic Boarding Schools
Islamic boarding schools are Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia that are unique among other educational institutions and have a strong religious habitus. This research aims to find out what the religious habitus of Islamic boarding schools looks like and what the construction process of religious habitus is in the Al-Islam Islamic boarding school in Ponorogo, East Java. Qualitative methods were used in this research, including observation, interview, and documentation techniques, as tools for collecting data. This research shows that the habitus characteristics of the Al-Islam Islamic boarding school include three aspects. Firstly, hysteresis lasts long and is not easily changed; it is difficult to change once formed. Secondly, transposability can be inherited and can be learned. Thirdly, it is a generator that encourages the growth of new social practices. The construction of the habitus of the Al-Islam Islamic boarding school at the beginning of its establishment went through a long dialectical process by the founders of the Islamic boarding school. Then, it was instilled in the students in various ways, including in the curriculum, role models from Kyai (the head of Islamic boarding schools), and instilling the Islamic boarding school’s philosophy of the five souls. The results of this research can contribute to strengthening religious habitus in Islamic boarding schools as religious education institutions regarding the importance of role models and a conducive environment in forming the religious habitus of students
Synergy of Islamic Religious Education Teachers in Fostering Digital Literacy and Research Culture among Students
Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers’ synergy in religious research must be integrated with science, technology, and social sciences and involve collaboration with other subject teachers to produce higherquality research products. This study aims to reveal the role of Islamic Education teacher synergy through digital technology research in developing a culture of literacy and science integration in madrasah aliyah. Qualitative research with a post-positivistic approach was conducted in January 2023 at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) Insan Cendekia Pekalongan, Central Java. Primary data were obtained through indepth interviews with the deputy head of student affairs and IRE teachers as research program supervisors. In contrast, secondary data came from documentation of the research results of the Madrasah Young Research (MYRES) team that won a silver medal at the national competition. The results showed that the synergy of IRE teachers in guiding student research could strengthen the culture of religious literacy, such as the study of Surah Maryam verse 23 with the tahlili interpretation approach, semantics, and physiology, which became the basis for the research product “al-Istisyfa” as a relaxation tool for pregnant women. This product integrates religion, science, technology, and social sciences, thus demonstrating the successful integration of various fields of science in religion and technology-based research
From Extremism to Moderation: Examining the Impact of the Densus 88 Assistance Program on Ex-Terrorism Convicts in Cirebon, West Java
This study examines the influence of Indonesia's Counterterrorism Special Detachment 88 unit (Densus 88 AT) assistance program on former terrorism convicts in Cirebon Regency, West Java, focusing on changes in their religious beliefs and attitudes. With security concerns surrounding violent extremism and terrorism in Indonesia, this research addresses the challenge of managing terrorism convicts who have completed their sentences, given the significant number of former terrorist offenders in certain regions. Using a case study approach, the research employs narrative analysis to collect primary data through observations, interviews, and a literature review. The fieldwork occurred in two phases between February and May 2021, involving former terrorism convicts, Densus 88 AT personnel, and Ministry of Religious Affairs officials. The study’s findings demonstrate shifts in socio-religious beliefs among the four informants, moving from extremist takfiri views to more moderate perspectives. Their paths to radicalization were diverse, influenced by groups like JAD and NII. The research highlights prisons as spaces for both radicalization and deradicalization, with interactions and exposure to alternative knowledge influencing changes in religious views. While Densus 88 AT’s economic recovery activities did not directly impact religious beliefs, they fostered attitudes conducive to religious interventions, such as flexible thinking and positive emotional attitudes. The study recommends involving religious leaders and educators to support economic recovery initiatives and promote a more moderate religious outlook among former terrorists. Enhanced collaboration among stakeholders is crucial to reinforce and effectively implement such programs, particularly with many terrorism convicts nearing the end of their sentences
