Life History Study on Witchcraft Victims

This study aimed to investigate the stories of witchcraft victims in depth. With the case study method in the form of a life history study, research data is reported using thematic analysis to answer research questions. The source of the research data is an informant who is domiciled in the city of Kupang and fits the criteria that have been established. Christian theology provides the primary basis for discussing the research results, while psychology contributes as a complementary viewpoint. The findings indicated that the informants are subjected to a physical ailment accompanied by psychological symptoms and that negative emotions prevail among the informants, leading to a diminished level of well-being.Despite the informant's unfavorable psychological condition, the interplay of appreciation with familial, social, and spiritual support can offer informants experiencing sickness a sense of positive significance. The informants sought deliverance through spiritual support, seeking exorcisms from servants of God, traditional massagers, and shamans. The study’s findings demonstrated that the informants had a gradually positive psychological condition. Still, spiritual camouflage was automatically built to avoid repeating comparable paranormal issues. However, rare and speculative cases of witchcraft are experienced by church members. Therefore, specific assistance by pastors, Christian counselors, psychologists, and/or psychiatrists is highly required as a follow-up action so that victims achieve targeted release and minimize adverse consequences that may occur post-witchcraft

Papua and Chuseok from South Korea, within a global context, employing Clifford Geertz's theory of cultural symbolism. Bakar Batu is a deeply rooted culinary and communal ritual in Papua, bringing people together in a shared act of cooking that honors ancestral spirits and nature. In comparison, Chuseok is a Korean harvest festival that celebrates gratitude for the year's abundance and includes ancestral rites and communal sharing of traditional foods. This study uses a qualitative approach to examine the symbolic meanings embedded in these two traditions through literature review and thematic data analysis. The findings reveal that, despite the forces of globalization and modernization, both Bakar Batu and Chuseok uphold collective identity and spiritual values, illustrating Geertz's perspective that symbols embody culture and reinforce social unity and cultural continuity. Each tradition, while evolving, remains resilient in preserving its symbolic meaning, underscoring the global relevance of cultural rituals in affirming identity, fostering community solidarity, and transmitting spiritual values across generations. This study contributes to global discourses on cultural preservation, emphasizing the universal role of ritual in sustaining identity and social cohesion amidst diverse cultural landscapes.

Bridging the Gap: Exploring Religious Literacy as an Alternative Approach to Religious Education in Indonesia

This research addresses the problem of religious education in Indonesia, which often focuses solely on theological education and causes alienation among religious communities. The study aims to explore religious literacy as an alternative to bridge this gap. This qualitative research uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough, analyzing one transcript based on a video lecture in an academic setting, four videos on international seminars, one short school video, and two talk shows on “Religious Literacy Indonesia” on YouTube. The analysis examines how religious literacy is described in the current religious education discourse, identifies the scholars involved, and explores the implications of religious literacy on the discourse of religious education. The result shows that religious literacy in Indonesia has adapted to government policies and educational needs, focusing on practical skills for religious teachers and extension officers. It collaborates with the government for effectiveness but remains mostly within academic circles, with limited public understanding. Challenges include maintaining religious identity and boundaries in interfaith learning. Religious literacy is expected to build social trust, which requires creating shared moral spaces among different religions and aiming for positive outcomes in interfaith relations

This study explains the transformation of the Dawuhan Tradition in Ngerso, Tawangmanggu, which is influenced by changes in religious practices that develop in the local community. This study uses a Cultural Studies approach to analyze changes in symbols and rituals that occur in the ceremony. The theory chosen in this study is Derrida's deconstruction theory, which is determined to reveal and understand the layers of meaning behind cultural and religious transformations. The main objective of this study is to show how negotiations between local traditions and religious influences reshape the implementation of the Dawuhan Tradition. Descriptive and qualitative methods collect data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that there are changes in the implementation of the Dawuhan Ceremony, such as changes in the time of implementation, replacement of sacred elements, and changes in offerings presented to ancestors. These changes are a reflection of the cultural negotiations that occur between local traditions and religious influences. This negotiation is carried out to maintain the relevance of the ritual in the context of modern life. In conclusion, this study provides an overview of the complex socio-cultural dynamics in society (religion and culture); tradition must adapt to social change without losing its essence. This research implies that it is a form of preserving tradition in changing times, which is done by reinterpreting it to be more relevant. On the other hand, this research also shows the existence of social and political hegemony over changes in tradition, and it can be underlined that the flexibility and ambiguity of Javanese tradition allow society to negotiate and adapt to change without losing its cultural identity

Inclusive Education Awareness: Muslim Community Response to The Jurisprudence of Disability in Yogyakarta

This study explores community perspectives on individuals with disabilities, recognizing consensus despite diverse viewpoints. Individuals with disabilities, whether physical or non-physical, are acknowledged to exhibit specific deficiencies while excelling in other aspects, warranting specialized attention, treatment, and facilities distinct from those serving non-disabled individuals. Our analysis, which uses qualitative field research methods, reveals a lack of public awareness of disability jurisprudence, especially in Yogyakarta. Interviews revealed a lack of awareness among the Muslim community, emphasizing the crucial role of disability Fiqh in guiding rituals and determining the validity of worship practices for individuals with disabilities. The findings underscore an information gap on the Fiqh of disability empowerment in Yogyakarta, emphasizing the need for a broader awareness campaign through various media channels. In addition, people with disabilities face significant challenges during worship, necessitating concrete collaborative efforts from the government, religious organizations, and the wider community to provide facilities and support. It is imperative to increase public understanding of disability jurisprudence and make concerted efforts to address information gaps, fostering a more inclusive worship environment for people with disabilities
