    No full text
This study explores the complex interplay between motivation and affective factors, emphasizing these components' critical role in the effectiveness of English as a second language (ESL) learning. Comprehending these processes enables educators to establish conducive situations that foster language acquisition. The study investigates the reasons behind ESL learners, ranging from authentic curiosity about the language and culture to pragmatic professional objectives. It examines how motivation interacts with attitudes, emotions, and anxiety levels during learning. To examine research on affective factors and motivation in ESL learning, using a qualitative research approach, the researcher reviewed the literature and examined academic books and articles about the motivations, challenges, emotional experiences, and cultural backgrounds of ESL learners, making sure to include relevant details and cite all relevant sources by American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. The results highlight the relationship between affective factors and motivation. Anxiety may impede language acquisition, whereas positive attitudes and internal motivation drive the process. The study emphasizes how crucial it is to have a welcoming classroom that considers cultural diversity and promotes a feeling of community. Policymakers and educators can benefit greatly from the insights this research induces. Educators may customize lessons to suit student requirements and learning styles by recognizing the interaction between affective factors and motivation. This will eventually result in a more positive and practical ESL learning experience for all students

Educators need insights into how various learning styles can influence learners' performance in assessments. Exploring the impact of different learning styles on EFL learners' TOEFL reading achievement is a multidimensional endeavor with implications for educators, learners, and the broader society. This study aims to investigate the extent to which vocational diploma EFL learners acquired English based on their preferred learning styles. The ex-post facto design was used for this study. As many as 37 participants were selected purposely from all majoring fourth semester students at an EFL vocational diploma college. A questionnaire was used to divide the participants into three groups depending on their preferred learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. A TOEFL reading test was employed to measure the participants’ English proficiency. The average scores for each learning style group were calculated and revealed that visual learners had an average TOEFL reading score of M=43.22, kinesthetic learners had an average TOEFL reading score of M=38.70, and auditory learners had an M=35.00. To statistically compare these averages, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. The ANOVA results showed a non-significant finding with df=2, F=1.102 and P=0.344. The findings revealed that the TOEFL reading comprehension scores of students with different learning styles did not differ significantly. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding individualized learning experiences and standardized language assessments. As the field of language education continues to evolve, further research will be pivotal in refining pedagogical practices to better meet the diverse needs of learners striving to excel in their language proficiency endeavors.

Prisoners spend a certain period in prison and must live in institutions with minimal activities. The longer the punishment period, the higher the stress conditions experienced by prisoners. The purpose of this research is to describe the coping stress strategies used by the inmates of unplanned murder at the Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Perempuan Kelas IIA Semarang. This research uses qualitative methods with a case study approach. Participants in this research were selected based on the purposive sampling technique; the selected participants were three female inmates of unplanned murder at the Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Perempuan Kelas IIA Semarang who were sentenced to more than 15 years. The research found that emotion-focused coping is a stress-coping strategy used more often than problem-focused coping. This is because of the minimal resources and the conditions of the demands of punishment in the prison, making the subject unable to cope with existing stressors directly. Subjects who are stressed and able to cope with it feel relieved, glad, optimistic, happy, and more motivated to pass their period of punishment
