EXPLORING FRIEZE PATTERNS IN LOTIS AMANUBAN WOVEN FABRICS: INTEGRATION OF TEKE AND BIKLUSU MOTIFS INTO MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

    No full text
AbstractThe teke (gecko) and biklusu (lizard) motifs in lotis woven fabrics represent symbolic and spiritual values in Amanuban culture while also containing mathematical structures. However, these mathematical aspects are rarely explored, and local weaving traditions are seldom integrated into formal mathematics learning. This gap has led to limited use of cultural resources in supporting students’ understanding of geometry. Therefore, this study identifies the types of frieze patterns in three variants of these motifs and explores their potential for integration into mathematics education. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing direct observation, documentation, and interviews with weavers and cultural elders. The primary data consisted of visual representations of the three motifs, which were analyzed through isometric transformations including translation, vertical and horizontal reflection, 180° rotation, and glide reflection. The classification was based on the seven types of frieze patterns as defined by the one-dimensional isometry group theory. The findings reveal that two motifs correspond to the F6 frieze pattern type, while one aligns with the F7 type, demonstrating varying degrees of geometric symmetry complexity. The teke and biklusu motifs can serve as effective contextual tools for mathematics instruction across educational levels, from pattern recognition in primary school to advanced discussions of isometry group theory in higher education. This approach aligns with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum by linking mathematics learning to meaningful local contexts

This study aims to explore the dynamics of Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth (VPTG) among Emergency Room nurses who experience Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three male nurses aged 30–34 and analyzed using MAXQDA software. Findings revealed that participants experienced STS due to exposure to patient deaths, traumatic injuries, medical procedure failures, and family pressure. Nonetheless, they also demonstrated positive growth, including increased empathy, personal strength, new life plans, and spiritual change. Social support and professional training facilitated this growth, while excessive workload and unresolved trauma acted as barriers. These results suggest that despite STS pressures, nurses have the capacity for psychological growth when supported by a conducive environment and adaptive coping strategies

The rapid advancement of technology does not always produce positive outcomes for university students. One emerging negative behavior is cyberloafing, defined as the use of internet access for non-academic purposes during learning activities. Self-control and learning motivation are considered important psychological factors that may help reduce cyberloafing behavior among students. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of learning motivation in the relationship between self-control and cyberloafing behavior among students of the Faculty of Economics at Universitas Medan Area. A quantitative research approach was employed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on Partial Least Squares (PLS). The sample consisted of 254 students selected through purposive sampling with the assistance of the Slovin formula. Data were collected using three instruments: a self-control scale, a cyberloafing behavior scale, and a learning motivation scale. The results indicated that self-control had a significant negative effect on cyberloafing behavior (β = −0.248, p < 0.05), learning motivation also had a significant negative effect on cyberloafing behavior (β = −0.252, p < 0.05), and self-control had a significant positive effect on learning motivation (β = 0.754, p < 0.05). Furthermore, learning motivation was found to significantly mediate the effect of self-control on cyberloafing behavior (β = −0.190, p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that higher levels of self-control and learning motivation are associated with lower levels of cyberloafing among university students. This study highlights the importance of strengthening students’ self-control and learning motivation as effective strategies to reduce cyberloafing behavior in academic settings

The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has become increasingly rampant among students, especially in the very high use of social media. This condition causes psychological pressure in the form of anxiety about being left behind from activities that others achieve. This research aims to understand and analyze the experiences of Muslim students who experience FoMO and how it affects students' productivity and academic focus. This study consisted of 7 informants by Muslim students who were in Yogyakarta and were around 19-22 years old. This research is also a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach that utilizes through semi-structured interviews with students who are pursuing their final projects and are active in using social media. The results of the study show that the most widely used platforms by students are WhatsApp and Instagram platforms where each data is 25%, and the duration of social media use in a day of 11-15 hours is 42.9%. Thus, there are several impacts, namely: (1) emotional, (2) academic distraction, (3) social comparison, (4) procrastination), (5) time management and discipline. Therefore, this study shows that FoMO has a great impact on the appearance of concentration disorders, anxiety, and less productive activities with peers. The implication of this research is that there is a need for special assistance related to emotional and digital literacy for students, so that the use of social media can be controlled in a healthy and good way without interfering with the academic process

Adolescence is a transitional period filled with challenges and opportunities for cognitive, emotional, and social development. One crucial aspect influencing adolescent well-being is self-esteem, an individual's evaluation of their worth and value. Low self-esteem is often associated with cognitive distortions that can affect adolescents' emotions and behaviors, leading to anxiety, depression, and maladaptive behaviors. This study explores the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in enhancing self-esteem among adolescents. CBT is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that assists individuals in identifying and transforming maladaptive negative thought patterns into more realistic and adaptive ones. This research employs a case study method involving a 16-year-old adolescent with low self-esteem resulting from cognitive distortions about herself and her environment. The CBT intervention was conducted over six sessions, including psychoeducation, monitoring of thoughts and emotions, identification of cognitive distortions, and the development of new cognitive and behavioral skills. The results indicate a significant increase in the participant's self-esteem scores, measured using the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) before and after the intervention. These findings suggest that CBT can be an effective intervention for enhancing adolescent self-esteem by equipping them with skills to manage emotions, alter negative thinking, and improve interpersonal relationships adaptively

Self-esteem is a crucial factor in an individual's life that influences various psychological and social aspects, including schadenfreude, which refers to the pleasure one feels at another person's misfortune. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-esteem and schadenfreude behavior among university students in Java, Indonesia. This research employs a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study involved 253 students selected using a purposive sampling technique. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), while schadenfreude behavior was assessed using the Schadenfreude Scale developed by Crysel and Webster (2018). Statistical analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and schadenfreude, with a correlation value of r = -0.699; p < 0.05. The majority of respondents exhibited moderate levels of self-esteem (48.86%) and schadenfreude behavior (51.14%). These findings imply that the higher an individual's self-esteem, the lower their tendency to experience schadenfreude, and vice versa
