Measuring Civic Engagement in Young Children
There is a dearth of studies exploring how younger children engage in civic life, what may be expected of them given their age, and what instruments may be used to capture their levels of civic engagement. Addressing these questions, this article presents key findings from a pilot study that aimed to create a validated instrument designed to measure the civic engagement of primary school children. Based on a survey administered to 655 primary school children aged 9–11 across England, this article focuses on the new measure that was specifically designed, and then tested and validated through both exploratory and confirmatory analyses. The findings validate a tripartite measure of civic engagement that assesses the civic attitudes, actions and awareness of 9–11-year-olds. This measure was found to be both practical and efficient in its administration, and it has been shown to be easily comprehensible by this age group. This new measure addresses an important gap in the literature on civic engagement in children, providing researchers with a validated tool to effectively measure civic engagement in 9–11-year-olds. The findings have implications for both researchers and educators interested in designing and evaluating interventions aimed at promoting civic engagement among younger children
Fear of death in students of the Intermediate Level Training Cycle in Health Emergencies Technician by Covid-19
The recent pandemic situation experienced as a result of Covid-19 has led to fear of death being a common denominator in society and even more so in those professionals exposed to patients with this disease. In this sense, the aim of this study is to analyse the fear of death due to Covid-19 as perceived by students of the Intermediate Level Training Cycle in Health Emergency Technician. For this purpose, a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out, with a comparative design, comprising a total of 44 students of the Intermediate Level of Health Emergency Technician. The procedure was carried out by completing the Spanish version of the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale (EMMCL). The most relevant results show that anxiety about death is something that worries the students, being one of the items that worries them most about dying alone, or not being able to say goodbye to their loved ones. Likewise, it is observed that the older they get, the more worried they are about losing their faculties before they die. In short, dying alone is one of the greatest concerns perceived by the students during their clinical practice, as well as the fear of not being able to see the deceased person any more. Promotion of hate speech by Spanish political actors on Twitter
By examining the messages published by Spanish political groups on Twitter, this paper seeks to identify the level and understanding of the type and use of hate speech within these groups’ discursive strategy. For this purpose, the topics of 60,209 tweets published between 1 September 2019 and 29 February 2020, by 16 political groups, leaders, and spokespersons of the Congress of Deputies in Spain were analysed. The data reveal a low presence of expressions of hate, most of which do not have a sentimental charge. Despite not observing a high rate of use of this type of expression within the rhetorical discursive strategy applied by political groups, some features associated with this type of expression are identified, more aimed at positioning around issues and specific social groups (immigration), and the greater use of messages published by others, retweeted by these actors for this purpose, among other features
Bridging the Printed or Digital Controversy: A Meta-Analysis of the Impact of Digital and Print Resources on College Students’ Reading Comprehension
Recent studies have shown contradictory results on the influence of digital technology on the level of reading comprehension performance in college students. This paper examines the existence of differences in reading comprehension between the use of digital technology and traditional support in college students. A meta-analysis of international publications between 2012–2022 is carried out with a total sample of 481 students. The results indicate that technology has not an average positive effect on reading comprehension. The study evidences improvement in students’ reading comprehension with printed medium with an effect size of 0.19. The practical implications should be aimed at stimulating research with new digital resources and increasing educational actions on teaching methodology in the classroom
To be fit, or not to be: How influencer-driven advertising reinforces idealized beauty standards in adolescents
This study examines adolescents’ perceptions of body image advertising portrayed by social media influencers. Through discourse analysis, the research explores how participants interpret messages conveyed through influencer advertising content. The analysis reveals a discrepancy between adolescents’ understanding of ideal body representations and the descriptors used in advertising, shedding light on societal pressures surrounding body norms within social media. These findings underscore the pervasive influence of social media and advertising on adolescent body image constructs, highlighting the importance of cultivating critical advertising literacy skills among adolescents. Additionally, the study reveals that influencers affiliated with advertising perpetuate the stereotypical ideals of the body, emphasizing the need for educational and policymaker initiatives to promote healthy self-image
The multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome and its framing in Social Security system
In this work, it is carried out an analysis of multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome as a possible contingency of permanent disability, that is, relating multiple chemical sensitivity to a work-related origin. The problem is that the number of studies is small, and it is very complex to be able to relate their origin to the strictly work environment. To this, it should be added that the symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity often overlap with other comorbidities, which makes their clinical assessment and differentiation from other similar ones difficult. Hence, it is necessary to carry out a study both from a medical point of view, analyzing its epidemiological and clinical characteristics to be able to associate it with a work origin, and to be able to declare permanent disability derived from professional contingencies.
Reflections on the law to read: research project in the school enviroment
For this reason, the aim of this paper is to present the Direito à Leitura project as part of the training
process for students and professionals. To support the proposal, we analyzed Objetivo de
Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) number four, which is intrinsically related to education and aims to
guarantee inclusive, equitable and quality education. Consequently, the concept of reading is based on
a resource that we cannot do without to achieve this goal. The starting hypothesis is based on the Law
to Read as an integral part of individual, social and cultural development. To this end, we intend to
study the right to read, the relationship between reading and teaching in Brazil and the intrinsic
relationship between reading and sustainable development for a more critical society. To conclude, we
would like to emphasize our commitment to the development of this research project and the reasons
that lead us to investigate how reading is encouraged and practiced in schools.O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar o projeto Direito à Leitura como parte de um processo de formação dos estudantes e profissionais.
Domestic assemblages, early childhood and digital media
In this article, we introduce the notion of domestic assemblage as a tool to understand early childhood digital practices in the home. Our proposal draws from an
ecological perspective of human development and urban studies from an ActorNetwork Theory perspective. We discuss the background of our concept and its
advantages and limitations by building on three cases collected within the Spanish
study of the “A Day in the Digital Lives of Children Aged 0-3” project. We use the
empirical materials of this study, centered on the video recording of a full day of
the life of a 0-3 year old child, to discuss two analytical paths: starting from the
digital device to reconstruct domestic assemblages or starting from routines to unpack how they are assembled in relation to digital technologies in the home.
