The S.S. Henry Bacon was built for the United States Maritime Commission by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company. It was the 40th ship to be launch from Wilmington during World War II and was the only one to bear the name of Wilmingtonian. It carried war cargo and helped to evacuate Norwegian refugees. Unfortunately, the ship was sunk off the coast of Norway after an attack by German planes in 1945

Edward Glenn Willlingham (1917-2004) was born in Willmington, NC. He was the son of Dr. Benjamin Joseph Willingham, who died in the 1918 influenza epidemic after continuing to treat sick patients. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School, and received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He was in the U. S. Navy during WWII, and was an instructor in the Naval Air Force with the rank of lieutenant
