Boney Family Architects

Leslie Norwood Boney (1880-1964) was a well-known and respected architect in North Carolina. He designed the Neo-Classic Revival Annex of the New Hanover County Courthouse, the Wilmington College Campus (later UNC Wilmington), St. Andrews-on-the-Sound, Cape Fear Clubhouse, and New Hanover Memorial Hospital, as well as over 1,000 other buildings. He was an early leader in the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. He served on the board of trustees at North Carolina State University, where there is a scholarship in his name, and started a family architectural firm that is still in business today.
His son Leslie Boney, Jr. (1920-2003) was the recipient of many national architectural honors and awards. He was active in the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, the Cape Fear Club, and director of the Bellamy Mansion. He won the Clarendon Cup Literary Award from the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, and the Ruth Coltrane Cannon Cup in 2002,which is the highest award given in North Carolina for historic preservation.
William Joseph Boney (1922-1993) started practice with his father (Leslie Boney, Sr.) after graduating from NCSU in 1947, and designed many school and medical facilities throughout his career. He was President of the Cape Fear Rose Society, on the board of directors of many historical and civic organizations, and active in the North Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He was the father of Paul Boney.
Charles Hussey Boney (1924- ) served on many boards in Wilmington and at North Carolina State University. He is well known for building health care facilities. He has served on the historic district commission, and received the F. Carter Williams Gold Medal, which is the highest honor given by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Paul Boney (1954- ) is the small boy in the photo, and one of several generations of Boneys to work at Boney Architects (now known as LSP3)

Originally Cooperative Building and Loan, the bank changed its name in 1948 to Cooperative Savings and Loan. It was run by the Willets family of Wilmington for many years. It into the 21st century, finally closing in June of 2009
