Riverfest began in 1979 and is celebrated in October every year. It runs along the Cape Fear river in downtown Wilmington, NC from the foot of Market Street to Cape Fear Community College. Old Wilmington Riverfront Organization Inc., which organizes Riverfest, donates funds raised by Riverfest to the Cape Fear Community College Marine Sciences Division for scholarships

    Photograph of Diane Cobb Cashman and Andrew Harriss, Jr. at a "Cape Fear Adventure" Christmas party. Diane Cobb Cashman (1938- ) is a prolific local author and researcher. She was a former president and longtime archivist for the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. She was also involved in the incorporation of the Historic St. Thomas Preservation Society and served on the boards of the Bellamy Mansion Museum and Historic Wilmington Foundation. Andrew Harriss, Jr. (1898-1998) was a much decorated veteran of Word Wars I and II and was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. (See Harriss, Andrew, Jr.

    Small a cappella vocal ensemble performing for an event at St. John's Art Museum (now Cameron Art Museum) in Wilmington, NC. From left to right: Margaret Hickman (1951- ), Tandy Brown (1956- ), Susan Deankel (1946- ), Thad Dankel (1942- ). Margaret Hickman works for the New Hanover County school system, and before that she worked at the New Hanover County Public Library. Tandy Brown is a Wilmington, NC native, and performs with several choral groups. Susan Dankel was the long-time Assistant Manager for the City of Wilmington, and then went on to be the manager of WHQR public radio station. In 2005 she was the University of North Carolina Wilmington Albert Schweitzer Honors Scholar for her over 20 years of leadership in music in southeastern North Carolina. Thaddeus George Dankel, Jr. was a professor with the Mathematics and Statistics department at UNCW for over 30 years

He was a singer-dancer whose career included vaudeville, motion pictures, television, the stage, and appearances at many of the nations' best hotels and night clubs. He brought his only son Sammy Davis, Jr. up in the family business as well. He returned to Wilmington in 1978 as a celebrity guest at the North Carolina Azalea Festival
