No full textThis is an evaluation of two statutes of November 16, 2004. One of these had to do with preliminary detention: the other with the grounds given in the judgement. The basis question was whether the new staturory rules have contributed to the improvement of efficiency of criminal proceedings.Op 16 december 2004 is een viertal wetswijzigingen in werking getreden (Stb 2004, 638, 639, 640 en 641) die als gemeenschap_pelijk oogmerk hebben de efficiëntie van het strafproces te bevorderen onder meer doordat de rechter meer bewegings_vrijheid wordt geboden het strafproces zo in te richten dat recht kan worden gedaan aan de belangen die op het spel staan. De vier wijzigingswetten betreffen:wijziging Wetboek van Strafvordering houdende enkele wijzigingen in regeling van voorlopige hechtenis (Stb. 2004, 578, 639)wijziging Wetboek van Strafvordering strekkende tot aanpassing van de eisen te stellen aan de motivering van de bewezenverklaring bij een bekennende verdachte (Stb. 2004, 580, 641)wijziging Wetboek van Strafvordering in verband met inbeslagneming en doorzoeking door rechter-commissaris (Stb. 2004, 577, 638)wijziging Wetboek van Strafvordering, Wetboek Strafrecht en Wet op de rechterlijke organisatie in verband met het horen getuigen (Stb 2004, 579, 640)Dit onderzoek betreft de vraag of de wetswijzigingen van 16 december 2004 met betrekking tot de voorlopige hechtenis en de motivering hebben bijgedragen aan de verbetering van de efficiëntie van het strafproces. ZEITSCHRIFT FUR PSYCHOLOGIE-JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLOGY. 2020;228(3):226-228.Despite the abundance of studies exposing heuristic and biased thinking in judicial decision-making, the influence of this empirical work in court is limited. In this commentary, we address this paradox and argue that the disconnect between empirical work and practice stems from the limited knowledge and consideration of procedural rules. These shortcomings increase the skepticism of legal scholars and practitioners of this research and give an excuse for dismissing the findings, deeming them inapplicable in court. We suggest that the only way forward is by diversifying our research methods and by building a culture of collaboration, fostering research partnerships between legal scholars and (legal) decision-making researchers. This approach aims to bridge the gap between legal and social sciences and to promote the impact of empirical studies of the legal system on current legal practice

A Knowledge Based System to Support Design for Selective Laser Melting
No full textModern Computer Aided Design/Engineering can assist in the design of highly optimized engineering structures. Such structures allow for a significant reduction on the strain of resources across the product life cycle, where the potential for weight reduction is most beneficial for the aerospace industry. However, their production is currently limited due to the limited design freedom of conventional processes. The design freedom of Selective Laser Melting may provide a solution, as this would allow the production of the optimized structures. Unfortunately, this vastly dimensional process is highly complex due to its highly transient heat transfer. Two main barriers are withholding adoption in the aerospace sector. Firstly, a lack of process control and understanding is limiting the design freedom. Secondly, a lack of process repeatability and standards are prohibiting process certification. A Knowledge Base System was developed for the centralization and standardization of knowledge, on the effect of input parameters on process performance. Essays on finance: Drivers of bank performance and the international cost of equity
No full textThis dissertation examines how the way banks function relates to their performance before, during, and after the recent financial crisis in an attempt to understand the causes of that crisis and what we might learn from it. It consists of four substantive chapters, 2-5, preceded by an introductory chapter. Chapter 2 analyzes the role of governance and behavioral dimensions in the ability of the largest U.S. banks to withstand the financial crisis independently. While these banks did not differ in terms of formal governance, I document how differences in certain behavioral dimensions, especially a CEO’s socio-economic background, are related to the banks’ crisis performance. Subsequently, Chapter 3 investigates the relationship between bank returns before and after the financial crisis. In the U.S., I document that the strong-performing banks from before the crisis have lagged behind since. Moreover, those banks also demonstrated large pre-crisis loan growth. I conclude that pre-crisis winners have been unable to adapt their pre-crisis, high-risk, business model to the post-crisis lower-risk environment. In Europe, by contrast, pre- and post-crisis performance is positively related. In Chapter 4, I shift my attention to bank performance around CEO turnover. In the initial years of a new CEO, bank performance declines, which can be fully explained by an increase in provisions for bad loans. Finally, Chapter 5 considers a firm’s cost of equity in international markets, a firm characteristic that is crucial for banks when valuing firms and assessing their risk profile. My research shows that it matters materially whether an international or national version of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) is used to determine the value of the cost of equity. Considering the increased integration of financial markets, I therefore recommend the use of the international CAPM

No full textThe purpose of this study was to examine longitudinal associations among thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and cognitive performance. Data collected at the first three assessment times, approximately 3 years apart, are reported for the survivors (n=45) from a previously published cross-sectional study. Participants were aged 75–93 years at baseline, and data reported were collected in the Kungsholmen Project, a longitudinal project investigating aging and dementia. Analyses revealed that although declining verbal fluency and visuospatial abilities were accompanied by simultaneously declining TSH levels, the pattern of cross-sectional and longitudinal results are interpreted such that declining TSH levels may have caused episodic memory deficits later on. These results were obtained in the examination of 6-year but not 3-year change, and after removal of the cognitive variation associated with depressive mood symptoms
