‘Shell to Sea’ in Ireland: building social movement potency
No full textIn 1996 the Corrib gas field, holding over 1 trillion cubic feet of gas, was discovered by Enterprise Oil 83km off the North West coast of Ireland. Acquired by Shell in 2002,
proposed extraction and processing is now a co-venture between several multinational energy corporations who aim to transport the gas some 90kms via pipeline to an onshore refinery site at Bellanaboy. Although heralded as a significant opportunity for development and employment by Shell and participating companies, local resistance to the proposals, on social and environmental grounds, has been
sustained and effective. Mirroring global conflicts between the petrochemical industry and local people and lifeworlds, this resistance has elicited repressive responses,
including the jailing of local landowners by the Irish state following their resistance to unprecedented compulsory land acquisition orders, and the taking out of a court injunction by Shell in 2005. Drawing on elements of contemporary social movement theory, and on both field research and analysis of campaign documents and media
reports, this paper seeks to describe and reflect on the shape and spread of the social movement that has arisen in response to this development project. We focus on the
‘Shell to Sea’ campaign which has argued for the offshore, as opposed to the onshore, development of the gas field, and has garnered support from many other social movement groups and networks. In particular we consider the use of alternative media in strengthening shared networks of concern and in engaging critically with corporate media representations of both the project and the mobilisation. We
conclude that social movement effectiveness and potency is in large part an outcome of collective and subjective commitments to intense work effort and the sharing of felt
solidarity regarding environmental and social concerns; and we iterate the significance of affective and subjective dimensions of social movement activities alongside more
conventional descriptions of work practices and structuring contexts
Sian Bowen and Nova Zembla: Suspending the Ephemeral
No full textAs Guest Artist in Drawing at Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Sian Bowen spent two years (2010-12) developing a new body of works; the Nova Zembla collection of prints, which, having lain frozen in the Arctic for three centuries, provided opportunities to explore the materiality of drawing and the ephemeral nature of museum objects on paper. The prints were carried as merchandise on a 1596 failed Dutch expedition to China. An over-wintering refuge on Nova Zembla housed these stacks until their discovery: they had been transformed into papier-mâché blocks. In 1977, methods were devised to reassemble the thousands of fragments.
The works in this exhibition reflect Bowen’s own ‘journey’
through the project, emphasizing the tactile qualities of her
artworks which, at the same time, employ light, transparency, perforation, reflection and fragility,
and consolidating the often fugitive nature of the materials used in
their making.
The artist realized the project collaborating with Rijksmuseum’s Paper
Conservation Studio to employ 16th century methods and materials to new ends, and also with archaeologists, curators, historians, printmakers and filmmakers. She worked closely with papermaker, Gangolf Ulbricht, to make paper for her drawings sympathetic to that of the Nova Zembla prints. In addition she retraced part of the route of the original expedition and filmed this journey through the fragmented icepack as it was reflected in a replica ‘Claude glass’

Базою для ВО 6 «Сян» була Перемиська область Організації Українських Націоналістів. Було створено штаб воєнної округи, а також більше десяти сотень УПА, які вели бойову діяльність, але восени 1944 р. з різних причин більшість з них були демобілізовані. В листопаді ВО 6 «Сян» як структурний підрозділ УПА-Захід була ліквідована, але у квітні 1945 р. знову відновлена в значно ширших межах. Такі зміни стали причиною суперечностей в історіографії щодо дати створення воєнної округи «Сян» та особливостей творення і діяльності відділів УПА в Перемищині та Лемківщині у 1944 р.Peremyshl’ military okruha (region) «Sian» (VO 6 «Sian») of Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was created within the taken in 1943 general course of the ukrainian liberation movement aimed in the armed struggle. The basis for VO 6 «Sian» Peremyshl’ region was the Ukrainian Nationalists Organization. The headquarters of military okruha and more than ten companies, which carried out combat activities, were created. Most of the military units were demobilized in October–November 1944 for various reasons. In November VO 6 «Sian» was liquidated as a structural unit of the UPA-Zakhid (UPA-West), but in April 1945 restored again in much wider borders. These changes have caused controversies in the historiography of the date of creation of military okruha «Sian» and features of the creation and activity of UPA in Peremyshl’ region and Lemkivshchyna in 1944

Hvordan forholder SIAN seg til tradisjonelle medier?
No full textTidligere forskning på ytre høyre organisasjoner I Norge har særlig omhandlet hvordan disse benytter sosiale medier for rekrutteringsarbeid og informasjonsspredning. Betyr dette at tradisjonelle medier er uviktige for ytre høyre organisasjoner i Norge? Dette masterprosjektet svarer på følgende forskningsspørsmål: hvordan forholder organisasjonen «Stopp islamiseringen av Norge» (SIAN) seg til tradisjonelle medier? Dette blir utført ved å besvare to underforskningsspørsmål: hvordan oppfatter SIAN tradisjonelle medier og hvilke mediestrategier benyttes av SIAN? Ved å utføre en temasentret dokumentanalyse av 67 Facebook-innlegg publisert av SIANs styremedlemmer og gruppemedlemmer finner oppgave at begge medlemsgruppene har en fiendtlig oppfatning av tradisjonelle medier. Videre suppleres den temasentrerte dokumentanalysen med semistrukturerte intervjuer med to nåværende styremedlemmer og et eks-styremedlem av SIAN. Oppgaven finner at de nåværende styremedlemmene har både en instrumentell og en fiendtlig oppfatning av de tradisjonelle mediene. SIAN-styret oppfatter tradisjonelle medier, som en effektiv kommunikasjonsplattform for rekrutteringsarbeid og informasjonsspredning. I tillegg nevner de nåværende styremedlemmene at sosiale og alternative medier er ikke effektive for å verve nye medlemmer. Videre presenterer oppgaven at styremedlemmene benytter en rekke mediestrategier for å utnytte tradisjonelle medier og oppnå politisk suksess. SIAN-styret genererer medieomtale ved å brenne Koranen som hjelper med rekrutteringsarbeid og lenker til de negative medieoppslagene på Facebook for å mobilisere gruppemedlemmene. Samtidig kontakter SIAN-styret journalister for å kontrollere medias omtale av SIAN. Gruppemedlemmene på sin side ønsker ikke å utnytte tradisjonelle medier for å oppnå politisk suksess. Gruppemedlemmene ønsker å kjempe mot tradisjonelle medier ved å avslutte NRK-lisensen og korrigere journalistene ved å kontakte dem
