Conversion of African Americans to Islam : a sociological analysis of the Nation of Islam and associated groups
'Conversion of African Americans to Islam: A Sociological Analysis of the Nation of
Islam Associated groups' is an empirical study of the religious experience of people
who had/have distinctive features in terms of race, ethnicity and historical experience.
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how African Americans' (AAs) conversion
experience in general, and the Nation of Islam associated groups' conversion in
particular, differ from the studies of recruitment and conversion in the sociology of
religion and New Religion Movements (NRMs). More specifically, their recruitment
and conversion experiences to Islam diverge from those who converted to mainstream
Islam. The study investigates how AAs' historical experience, soci-economic
difficulties and the racism they encountered shaped and influenced their religious
understanding.
Research methods involved participant observations, a survey questionnaire, interviews,
conversations, personal communications and correspondence. To collect ethnographic
data eleven months field research was conducted mainly in the Chicago area and on two
short visits to Detroit, and three years continued communications with Muslim officials
and academics in the area. During the field research and afterwards through personal
communication 181 survey questionnaire responses were received, and 23 Muslim
officials, academics and ordinary Muslims were interviewed through semi-structured,
unstructured interviews, conversation and correspondence.
The thesis begins with a brief history of Islam and Muslims in general and the African
American Muslims (AAMs) in particular. More emphasis is given on the historical
development of the Nation of Islam (NOl). Then in Chapter III, discussions of schisms
in the history of the NOT are examined from sociological perspectives of social and
religious movements. In Chapter IV I aimed to formulate my own perspective to
analyse and study the conversion experiences of AAMs to Islam. I used a multivariate
approach, considering selectively widely held conversion and recruitment theories in the
sociology of the religion. I consider in Chapter V the predisposing conditions for AAMs
that influence their decision-making to join in the NOT, for example, political and
nationalistic sentiments and socio-economic deprivations. In Chapter VI I have applied
different terms to describe their religious experiences, such as conversion, alteration and
reversion. I have analysed further their encounters with the NOT, the methods of
recruitment they used and their major motives for joining the NOT and converting to
Tslam. In the concluding chapters (Chapter VII VTTT) I describe the different responses
of AAMS to Islam following the death of Elijah Muhammad. It is found out that the
Islamic appeal has polarised. While Farakhan's NOT appeared to continue the tradition
and style of the old NOI with the emphasis on nationalistic and socio-economic factors,
Tmam W. D. Mohammed's community turned more to the religious and spiritual aspects
of Tslam. These different approaches led to a polarisation of the appeal of Tslam to
AAMS.
This thesis contributes to knowledge in four key areas; the sociology of religion and
religious movements, the sociology of social and nationalistic movements, religious and

Perencanaan Dinding Geser Kantilever Pada Gedung Bertingkat Tinggi Hotel Rufai Sorong Papua Barat
Pembangunan gedung - gedung tinggi yang direncanakan perlu
mempertimbangkan beberapa faktor salah satunya adalah keamanan. Semakin
tinggi suatu gedung maka resiko untuk menahan gaya lateral, terutama akibat
beban gempa semakin besar pula maka perlu adanya pembangunan gedung
yang tahan terhadap gempa. Perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan telah
memunculkan salah satu solusi untuk meningkatkan kinerja struktur bangunan
tingkat tinggi yaitu dengan pemasangan dinding geser. Dinding geser dipasang
didapat φ13-80 mm
A Comparative Evaluation of the Lagos and IIUM Models of Islamic Teacher Preparation
The Muslim world has witnessed the emergence of several Islamic-based institutes and universities in the last four decades, in keeping with some of the recommendations of the World Conferences on Muslim Education. Yet there has not been a comprehensive study of the system as operated in various contemporary Muslim settings, with a view to assessing the degree of its adequacy and efficacy. The purpose of this paper is to carry out a comparative evaluation of the Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Education programmes of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and the University of Lagos in Nigeria. The choice of the two educational settings was informed by the impression that Malaysia offers some of the best practices in Islamic education, which may be used as standards in benchmarking for Islamic education in Nigeria, an African country with the largest Muslim population. The significance of such a study lies in its potentiality to expose the strengths and deficiencies of each of the models, as well as highlight their commonalities and differences with regard to educational aims, curricula, structures, teaching methods, and evaluation procedures. The paper is guided by three research questions seeking to elicit information or generate data about the nature of the two models being evaluated, the comparative strengths and weaknesses of the two models, and ameliorative propositions with potential to enrich or enhance the quality of the two models. The paper employs curriculum criticism and the analytic method in its comparative evaluation. The significance of the paper lies in its ameliorative propositions for curriculum enrichment purposes, aimed at making the two models better and of merit

An appraisal of technical skills possessed by technical college auto-mechanics graduates in Nigeria
The study was aimed at identifying the level of technical skills possessed by technical college automotive graduates in Auto-Electrical system maintenance and the factors influencing the level of technical skills possessed in auto electrical maintenance. A total of 56 auto-mechanics technical college graduates that are working in Bauchi and Gombe states and their 42 supervisors served as the respondents of the research. Auto-Electrical task cluster from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) modular curriculum was used in developing the instrument for data collection (questionnaire). A test-re-test was used in determining the reliability of the instrument and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to compute the reliability coefficient. The instrument had a reliability index of 0.72. Mean was used to answer the research questions and t-test statistics were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 significant levels. The findings of the study revealed that: technical college auto mechanic graduates exhibited low level of technical skills in auto-electrical maintenance. The use of outdated teaching and learning facilities, teacher’s competency, mismatch between curriculum content and needs of industry are the major factors affecting the acquisition of technical skills in auto-electrical system maintenance among auto-mechanics students. It was recommended that real or prototype of modern automobile and up to date equipment and learning facilities should be made available for teaching students in technical colleges, refresher courses be organized for auto mechanic teachers regularly in the auto mobile industry to update their technical skills, Curriculum of auto-mechanics trade should be reviewed on regular basis to reflect the need of the industries and the school learning environment should be a replica of working environment
