Scheurvorming in jong beton: Onderzoek biedt nieuwe inzichten in de spanningsrelaxatie bij jong beton
No full textBeton is tijdens het verharden onderhevig aan thermische en autogene vervormingen. Wanneer deze worden verhinderd, resulteert dit in spanningen en het risico op scheurvorming, mede afhankelijk van relaxatie. Aan de TU Delft is onderzoek gedaan naar het effect van spanningsrelaxatie op scheurvorming in jong beton. In tegenstelling tot de verwachtingen, blijkt dat spanningsrelaxatie in de eerste twee dagen juist resulteert in een verhoogd risico op scheurvorming bij bepaalde constructies met verhinderde vervorming. Ook blijkt dat autogene zwelling daarbij een significante rol speelt, die tot op heden in de norm buiten beschouwing wordt gelaten.Materials and EnvironmentConcrete Structure

Detection of the irradiated donor in the LMXBs 4U 1636-536 (=V801 Ara) and 4U 1735-444 (=V926 Sco)
Full text linkPhase-resolved VLT spectroscopy of the bursting low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1636-536/V801 Ara and 4U 1735-444/V926 Sco is presented. Doppler images of the N iiiλ4640 Bowen transition reveal compact spots which we attribute to fluorescent emission from the donor star and enable us to define a new set of spectroscopic ephemerides. We measure Kem= 277 ± 22 and 226 ± 22 km s−1 from the N iii spots in V801 Ara and V926 Sco, respectively, which represent strict lower limits to the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor stars. Our new ephemerides provide confirmation that light-curve maxima in V801 Ara and likely V926 Sco occur at superior conjunction of the donor star and hence photometric modulation is caused by the visibility of the X-ray heated donor. The velocities of He iiλ4686 and the broad Bowen blend are strongly modulated with the orbital period, with phasing supporting emission dominated by the disc bulge. In addition, a reanalysis of burst oscillations in V801 Ara, using our spectroscopic T0, leads to K1= 90–113 km s−1. We also estimate the K-corrections for all possible disc flaring angles and present the first dynamical constraints on the masses of these X-ray bursters. These are K2= 360 ± 74 km s−1, f(M) = 0.76 ± 0.47 M⊙ and q= 0.21–0.34 for V801 Ara and K2= 298 ± 83 km s−1, f(M) = 0.53 ± 0.44 M⊙ and q= 0.05–0.41 for V926 Sco. Disc flaring angles α≥ 12° and q≃ 0.26–0.34 are favoured for V801 Ara whereas the lack of K1 constraint for V926 Sco prevents tight constraints on this system. Although both binaries seem to have intermediate inclinations, the larger equivalent width of the narrow N iii line in V801 Ara at phase 0.5 relative to phase 0 suggests that it has the higher inclination of the two

A 1.2-mW/Channel Pitch-Matched Transceiver ASIC Employing a Boxcar-Integration-Based RX Micro-Beamformer for High-Resolution 3-D Ultrasound Imaging
No full textThis article presents a low-power and small-area transceiver application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for 3-D trans-fontanelle ultrasonography. A novel micro-beamforming receiver architecture that employs current-mode summation and boxcar integration is used to realize delay-and-sum on an N -element sub-array using N× fewer capacitive memory elements than conventional micro-beamforming implementations, thus reducing the hardware overhead associated with the memory elements. The boxcar integration also obviates the need for explicit anti-aliasing filtering in the analog front end, thus further reducing die area. These features facilitate the use of micro-beamforming in smaller pitch applications, as demonstrated by a prototype transceiver ASIC employing micro-beamforming on sub-arrays of N=4 elements, targeting a wearable ultrasound device that monitors brain perfusion in preterm infants via the fontanel. The Ulsan port development plan
No full textThe subject of investigation in this study is the extension of Ulsan Port in the south east of the Korean peninsula. The existing port of Ulsan is mainly an industrial port, with refineries, petro-chemical industries, car manufacturing and ship building. The Korean government is setting up an overall port development strategy, in which Ulsan Port must be transformed from a mainly industrial port to a multi purpose port. Besides this transformation, the existing cargo throughput is envisaged to increase significantly over the next decades. These trends require the development of new port facilities in the Ulsan region. A consortium of Korean consultants already has drafted a master plan for the Ulsan Port development. No full textDe Rijksplanologische Dienst (thans het DG Ruimte) wil weten wat er gebeurt met ruimtelijke planningsstelsels onder de invloed van de EU en Europa zonder grenzen. De Delftse onderzoekers Martin de Jong en Jochem de Vries hebben zich verdiept in de Vlaamse wereld van de ruimtelijke planning. Ze onderzochten of beleidsoverdracht vanuit Nederland plaats heeft gevonden en hoe dat werkte. Door de gemeenschappelijke taal zou dat toch geen al te grote problemen moeten geven. Ze beschrijven de verschillende bestuursculturen en constateren, dat de Vlamingen voor hun Ruimtelijk Structuurplan uit 1997 van o.a. de Nederlanders geleerd hebben, maar dat de Nederlandse planners nogal op zichzelf gericht zijn. Ze bevelen aan om meer kennis uit te wisselen, met name bij grensoverschrijdende projecten.OT

Dynamic modeling of the heat pipe-assisted annealing line
No full textIn a conventional continuous annealing line, the energy supplied to steel strip during heating is not recovered while cooling it. Therefore, an alternative heat transfer technology for energy efficient continuous annealing of steel was developed. This technology enables reusing the heat extracted during cooling of the strip in the heating part of the process. This is achieved by thermally linking the cooling strip to the heating strip via multiple rotating heat pipes. In this context, the dynamic simulation of a full heat pipe assisted annealing line is performed. The dynamic simulation consists of the interaction of computational building blocks, each comprising of a rotating heat pipe and strip parts wrapped around the heat pipe. The simulations are run for different installation configurations and operational settings, with the heat pipe number varying between 50 and 100 and with varying strip line speed and dimensions. The heat pipes are sized to be 0.5 m in diameter and 3 m in length. The simulation results show that the equipment is capable of satisfying the thermal cycle requirements of annealing both at steady-state and during transition between steady-states following changes in boundary conditions.
