Evaluation of Australian Performing Arts Market 2014-2018: APAM inter-year report 2015
In the awarding of the tender for APAM by the Australia Council to Brisbane Powerhouse for the delivery of the market in 2014-2018, a requirement is that a formal evaluation of the three iterations of APAM be undertaken by the Queensland University of Technology, Creative Industries Faculty, under the leadership of Associate Professor Sandra Gattenhof. The agreed research model delivers reporting on outcomes not only in the year in which APAM is delivered (2014, 2016, 2018) but also in the years between (2015, 2017). \ud

This inter-year report focuses on the domestic and international touring outcomes resulting from engagement in the 2014 Market and responds two of the three key research foci for the evaluation that are articulated in the Brisbane Powerhouse Tender (2011) document as:\ud
\ud
• Evaluation of international market development outcomes through showcasing work to targeted international presenters and agents\ud
\ud
• Evaluation of national market development outcomes through showcasing work to national presenters and producers.\ud

The reporting for mid-year 2015, a non-APAM year, collects data from two key sources – six identified case study productions that have been tracked for eighteen months, and an online survey delivered to all APAM 2014 delegates. This inter-year report is a six month follow-up with delegates and identified case studies companies that track the ongoing progress of market outcomes and levers for ongoing improvement of the APAM delivery model that was tabled in the Year One Report delivered to Brisbane Powerhouse in October 2014
Evaluation of Australian Performing Arts Market 2014-2018 REPORT TWO APAM inter-year report 2015 DECEMBER
The report follows up on data and trends tabled in August 2015 that collected data from two key sources – six identified case study productions that have been tracked for eighteen months, and an online survey delivered to all APAM 2014 delegates. The comparative report has been constructed through an analysis of data reported from the August 2015 and the most recent online survey to all 2104 PM delegates conducted in late November 2015. The report highlights six key trends emerging from the data: The majority of survey respondents will return to APAM 2016; The central reason for attending is the networking opportunities the Market affords; Respondents are confident that a range of new relationships forged at the Market will afford long-term interest and buying opportunities and that as a result of the 2014 event, real touring outcomes were realised for some respondents; Respondents would like to see greater attention to a greater number of networking activities within the program to enable touring outcomes; The multi-venue model is still of concern, and is a recurrent issue from earlier surveys; The level of expense incurred by producers to present work at APAM. Throughout the report, extracted data from the online survey responses will be tabled to develop a narrative in response to the key research aims outlined in the Brisbane Powerhouse Tender document (2011). A full version of the collated responses to the survey questions can be found in the appendices of the report

The Australian performing arts market (APAM) scoping study
Market Development commissioned Justin McDonnell (Anzarts) in late 2010 to write the APAM scoping study. The scoping study aims to inform future directions and priorities for APAM.
Specific objectives include:
To evaluate the relevance and appropriateness of the current APAM model
To make recommendations around future strategic directions for APAM.
The scoping study includes wide and targeted consultation with a variety of stakeholders from government to international presenters and local arts organizations, producers and peak or other advocacy bodies. The Australia Council would like to thank those who contributed their time and insight into the research driving Justin Macdonnell’s report.
NEXT STEPS
Many of the report’s recommendations are incorporated into plans for APAM 2012.
The Market Development team has prepared a Tender schedule. The call for tender will occur end May 2011 with the outcome publicly announced at APAM 2012.
Discussion with key sector representation will inform tender inclusions.
BACKGROUND
APAM was established by the Australia Council for the Arts in 1994 to “increase international and national touring opportunities for Australian contemporary performing arts groups and artists” (Australia Council Audience and Market Development Division 2002).
Nine markets have been held to date – the first (1994) and second (1996) were held in Canberra in conjunction with the National Festival of Australian Theatre. Since 1998 APAM has been held in Adelaide in conjunction with the Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival. The current contract for APAM, held by the South Australian Government (through Arts South Australia) and produced by Arts Projects Australia (APA) since 1998 expires following APAM 2012.

Attachment of APAM to mineral particles in seawater
Polymer injection is used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) when an oil field ages and the pressure in the reservoir decreases, or for oil fields with heavy oil. By polymer injection, the viscosity of the water injected for pressure support is increased by mixing with a high concentration of a polymer solution. Polymers used in EOR operations are often high molecular weight polyacrylamides, including anionic polyacrylamide (APAM), which may subsequently enter the marine environment with produced water releases. Since seawater (SW) contains mineral particles (MPs) in low concentrations, and polymers like APAM are known to flocculate MPs, we investigated if APAM at different concentrations (0.5–10 mg/L) would attach and flocculate MPs, when these occurred in concentrations relevant for oceanic SW (1 mg/L). Two types of MPs, diatomaceous earth and kaolin, were exposed to fluorescence-tagged APAM (APAM-TAG). A low-energy carousel system with natural seawater (SW) was used for incubation of MPs and APAM-TAG at a temperature relevant for the Norwegian Continental Shelf (13 °C). Attachment to MPs and aggregates of these were analysed by fluorometry and fluorescence microscopy. Particle analyses showed that only minor fractions of the MPs aggregated. When samples were separated in steel filter with a mesh size of 20 μm, APAM-TAG was mainly measured in the flow-through fraction (<20 μm), and the results therefore showed that the polymer mainly remained in the water-phase, or was attached to small particles (<20 μm). For the small fraction of APAM attaching to aggregated MPs, attraction to kaolin was higher than to diatomaceous earth, and fluorescence microscopy analyses confirmed the presence of fluorescent particles at the higher APAM concentrations. MPs at concentrations relevant for oceanic SW are therefore not expected to significantly contribute to sedimentation of APAM dissolved in the water column.publishedVersio
