Abstract : Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems placed at urban areas tend to be partially shaded due to the neighbouring surroundings and elements of the building itself. A further limitation to maximum energy harvest of PV in buildings is the building envelope itself, and PV modules will hardly ever be installed with optimum tilt and orientation angles. The objective of this thesis is to propose a simplified method to determine an index to quantify the influence of partial shadings on the performance of building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV). The method consists in identifying and quantifying the shading on a surface, relating the fraction of shaded area with the percentage of incident irradiation reduction during the same period, and propose a shading index (IS) to translate the losses in energy generation systems which are partially shaded. The method was developed for a theoretical case study with partial shading simulated in two cities: Singapore (1.35° N) and Florianópolis (27.48° S). Four real case studies located in Singapore and Florianopolis were analysed in detail regarding the performance of each of their subsystems. The parameters analysed were: energy yield (productivity), performance ratio (PR) and percentage of shading (PS). The shading indexes obtained by simulation were then applied on estimates to quantify the energy generated by the case studies, and comparisons between simulation and real data were carried out. The results showed that the percentage of shading on a surface on an annual basis is closer to the percentage of reduction of incident irradiation at same period, than when these values are compared in other time bases, as hourly, daily and monthly. Therefore, the percentage of shading was adopted as the annual shading index. The annual shading index proved to be a safe way of forecasting the photovoltaic generation of partially shaded photovoltaic systems both through manual calculations and through calculations using computer software

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Reducing the experimental effort to design pharmaceutical tablet lubrication by model-based design of experiments

    No full text
In oral solid-dosage manufacturing through direct compression, lubrication is used to enhance powder flowability and the ejection of the tablet from the die. However, lubrication can negatively impact tablet quality attributes such as tablets hardness or dissolution. In order to facilitate the selection of an appropriate lubrication extent, different models describing the relation between compaction performance and process conditions may be used. In particular, the extension of the Kushner and Moore model proposed by Nassar et al. (Nassar et al., 2021, Int. J. Pharm., 592, 119980) allows predicting tensile strength over a wide range of tablets solid fraction and powder blending time values. The main drawback of this model is that it requires a large number of experiments for parameter estimation. This results into a significant consumption of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), which may be scarce and considerably expensive. In this study, model-based design of experiments is used to reduce the required experimental effort for the identification of the model parameters. We propose a novel procedure that is able to reduce parameters uncertainty while minimizing the number of required experiments. Results based on a simulated case-study demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach
