The intention to share: professionals’ knowledge sharing behaviors in online communities

    No full text
Since the 1990s, the rise of some online communities as well as the decline of others has caught the attention of academia as well as of practice. One assumption for the decline of some online communities is the lack of the rich knowledge content that is believed to be the source of competitiveness and sustainability of any online community. Online communities are increasingly acknowledging the value of knowledge and the knowledge sharing processes required for online communities to build and sustain their identity in this competitive and constantly changing online environment. This research aims to provide an understanding of knowledge sharing behavior through the adaptation of two major theories imported from Social Psychology: the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB). Exploring knowledge sharing from a social psychological perspective provides an understanding of the process an individual goes through to make the decision to share his/her knowledge with others as well as the different psychological factors facilitating or hindering knowledge sharing behavior. Research findings are based on a web-survey of 158 group members, and an observation of interactions of eight active groups in one online community of professional educators. Proposing an extended theoretical model of knowledge sharing behavior in an online community, this research found that normative pressures, including subjective norms and descriptive norms, had a strong influence on the formation of the individual’s intention to share in the online community. Knowledge sharing self-efficacy also was found to significantly account for explaining the individual’s motivation to share his/her knowledge with other members. Attitude and controllability were not found to have significant impacts on the formation of intention. The qualitative analysis of the interactions of members of eight active groups revealed that there were other implicit factors that motivated individuals to engage in online activities. The observation of 24 online sessions had generated beliefs related to knowledge sharing behavior. Those beliefs were related to normative beliefs and the pressure created by the expectations of others, control beliefs and the confidence of the individual’s ability to behave, and finally, behavioral beliefs and individual outcome expectations.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Bibi M. The β-1,4-d-xylanohydrolase is an industry valuable catalytic protein and used to synthesize xylooligosaccharides and xylose. In the current study, β-1,4-d-xylanohydrolase from Geobacillus stearothermophilus KIBGE-IB29 was partially purified up to 9.5-fold with a recovery yield of 52%. It exhibited optimal catalytic activity at pH-7.0 and 50 °C within 5 min. Almost 50% activity retained at pH-4.0 to 9.0 however, 70% activity observed within the range of 40 °C to 70 °C. The β-1,4-d-xylanohydrolase showed a significant hydrolytic pattern with 48.7 kDa molecular mass. It was found that the enzymatic activity improved up to 160% with 1.0 mM ethanol. Moreover, the activity of enzyme drastically increased up to 2.3 and 1.5 fold when incubated with Tween 80 and Triton X-100 (1.0 mM), respectively. The β-1,4-d-xylanohydrolase also retained 72% activity at −80 °C after 180 days. Such a remarkable biochemical properties of β-1,4-d-xylanohydrolase make it possible to forecast its potential use in textile and food industries.

The main aim of this study was to identify the perception of secondary school teachers towards transformational leadership styles among their principals for teachers' effectiveness. The transformational leadership factors consist of idealised influence attribute and behaviour, intellectual stimulation, individualised consideration and inspirational motivation. The study was conducted in ten secondary schools in the Kuala Pilah, Jelebu and Jempol district. A total of 235 teachers were selected by using a simple random sampling method. Statistical analysis such as descriptive, percentage, means scores and Pearson correlation test were carried out. The findings revealed that the principals 'sometimes' exhibited idealised influence attribute (X = 2.35) and behaviour, 'sometimes' provided inspirational motivation (X=2.59), and 'sometimes' (X=2.59) utilised intellectual stimulation in executing tasks to teachers. The results also proved principals in KPJJ district 'once in a while' give individualised consideration (X= 1.89) to their teachers. Correlational analysis indicated that principals' idealised influence attribute, idealised influence behaviour, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualised consideration were related to teachers' effectiveness. This means that the relationship between the four factors of transformational leadership and teachers' effectiveness were positive and moderate. The higher the principals displayed transformational leadership styles the higher will be teachers' effectiveness in their performance
