Hui studied computer engineering at the University of Hong Kong, before writing this PhD thesis at Goldsmiths University London under French philosopher Bernard Stiegler, and later obtained his Habilitation in philosophy from Leuphana University, Lüneburg. Hui is author of several monographs that have been translated into a dozen languages, including On the Existence of Digital Objects (2016), The Question Concerning Technology in China: An Essay in Cosmotechnics (2016), Recursivity and Contingency (2019), Art and Cosmotechnics (2021), and the soon to be published, Machine and Sovereignty. In this podcast we discuss the Chinese philosophical notion of Qi, breath, Chinese materialism and their relation to Gilbert Simondon’s notion of “concretisation“

Review: Yuk Hui, On The Existence of Digital Objects
Get PDFHuman made technical objects are constantly changing, taking on new forms that are appropriate to their epoch. Technical objects in the digital age are no exception. In fact, the digital object’s rate of change at the moment is one of rapid acceleration. Only a few years ago email went out of fashion only to be replaced by Facebook and Twitter. The digital form of the technical object is in full flux and yet neither philosophy nor engineering is able to grasp its ever-changing essence. Here lies the premise of Yuk Hui’s On The Existence of Digital Objects published by University of Minnesota Press in 2016. Hui is no stranger to the nuances of either technical or the natural object having studied both Computer Engineering at The University of Hong Kong and philosophy at Goldsmiths at the now defunct Culture Studies department where he met his mentor Bernard Stiegler who offers his views on the book in the preface. Evidence of Stiegler’s influence is seen in many parts of the book but most prominently in Hui’s choice of thinkers, Husserl, Simondon and Heidegger, three figures that feature repeatedly in Stiegler’s own work most notably the three volumes of Technics and Time (Stiegler, 2009)

Physis e cosmotécnica: um desenvolvimento na filosofia da tecnologia a partir de Yuk Hui
No full textPode-se dizer que o texto “A Questão da Técnica” de 1953 deu o primeiro passo na consolidação da filosofia da tecnologia enquanto disciplina. Partindo de uma apresentação do conceito de phýsis, desenvolve-se o conceito de cosmotécnica, assim como apresentado pelo Yuk Hui. O termo cosmotécnica faz alusão aos dois conceitos centrais de natureza e de técnica, o que leva a uma tentativa de explicação que dê conta de um âmbito total do ente. Dessa forma, pautado em uma leitura crítica do texto heideggeriano de 1953, o presente artigo aponta para o trabalho de Yuk Hui como um exemplo notável de um pensador que segue de maneira sui generis a trilha posta pelo relato heideggeriano.</jats:p
