High-contrast Imaging with Fizeau Interferometry: The Case of Altair

    No full text
The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) has two 8.4 m primary mirrors that produce beams that can be combined coherently in a "Fizeau"interferometric mode. In principle, the Fizeau point-spread function (PSF) enables the probing of structure at a resolution up to three times better than that of the adaptive-optics-corrected PSF of a single 8.4 m telescope. In this work, we examined the nearby star Altair (5.13 pc, type A7V, hundreds of Myr to ≈1.4 Gyr) in the Fizeau mode with the LBT at Brα (4.05 μm) and carried out angular differential imaging to search for companions. This work presents the first filled-aperture LBT Fizeau science data set to benefit from a correcting mirror that provides active phase control. In the analysis of the λ/D angular regime, the sensitivity of the data set is down to ≈0.5 M o˙ at 1″ for a 1.0 Gyr system. This sensitivity remains limited by the small amount of integration time, which is in turn limited by the instability of the Fizeau PSF. However, in the Fizeau fringe regime we attain sensitivities of Δm ≈ 5 at 0.″2 and put constraints on companions of 1.3 M o˙ down to an inner angle of ≈0.″15, closer than any previously published direct imaging of Altair. This analysis is a pathfinder for future data sets of this type, and represents some of the first steps to unlocking the potential of the first Extremely Large Telescope. Fizeau observations will be able to reach dimmer targets with upgrades to the instrument, in particular the phase detector. © 2022. The Author(s). Teaching the mindset for additive manufacturing design : some experiences from three years of teaching additive manufacturing design

    No full text
Additive manufacturing technologies have undergone a rapid development since roughly 2015 when the “hype” around the topic started. Companies have discovered their main field of interest and their areas of possible AM business cases. The bottleneck however is often linked to the areas of part design and optimization, when it comes to taking advantage of the design freedom offered by AM. In many cases this bottleneck seems more severe than any bottleneck coming from the technology itself. In the presentation, the author shares some of his experiences related to teaching around design and structural optimization of AM parts and components.NonPeerReviewe

Case Law and its Binding Effect in the System of Formal Sources of Law

    No full text
The author proposes changes to the traditional concept of formal sources of law. This concept originates in the 18th century, but it fails in adapting to the development of the law, especially in relation to principles of legal certainty and predictability of legal decisions. The definition of formal sources of law is also vague and unclear and it brings more problems than it offers solutions and insight. To replace it, the author offers a new distinction – based on the criterion of autonomy of the sources of law. To support his arguments, the author compares the status of court decisions in common law and civil law systems but also focuses on the difference between individual countries belonging to the civil law system. The comparative criteria are mainly focusing on the nature and strength of the binding effect of the case law for the lower courts, but also on institutional aspects within the court hierarchy, e.g. if a judge can be liable in any way for ignoring a source of law

This project originally initiated from an interest related to the studies of the relation between literature and society, literature and reality, and also an interest towards the dystopian perspective. Having in mind the main objective of discussion about the juxtaposition between the literary genre dystopia and our reality, and how it works as a manner of social criticism, taking in use the reading of the book The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (as a result of a proximity and better understanding of the topics referred to). For the theoretical study of the relation between literature and society, it was chosen the book Literature and Society by Antonio Candido. Alongside the possible conclusions (and provisory) lays the fact that the genre dystopia can’t be away from de condition of a product of the contemporary society and its problems. Ultimately, every current dystopian work can be seen as a reflexion of the society in which it’s inserted into, bringing light to the sociopolitics problems the author deems important enough to identify and fictionalize

Th is article presents results of empirical research focusing on the question of how Czech district courts provide their judgments to individuals based on their requests using right to access to public information. The author presents datasets on how the courts adhered the deadlines prescribed by the law, the length of their delay, reasons why some courts refused to provide the information and also the amount of payment requested for the information. The basis of the article is, therefore, empirical, but its conclusions are normative, as the author criticizes two branches of case law of the Czech Supreme Administrative Court, which unnecessarily restrict right to access to public information without corresponding improvement on the side of other countervalue

    No full text
Abstract Abstract __________________________________________________________________________________ Introduction: Healthcare facilities often face overcrowding and extended waiting times in emergency rooms (ERs). This leads to higher patient morbidity and mortality rates and reduces patient satisfaction. Managing patient flow between the ER and the Outpatient Department (OPD) at Ibrahim Bin Hamad Obaidullah Hospital (IBHOH) is crucial to addressing these issues. The study analyzes the relationship between ER visits and OPD workflow from January to June 2024. Seasonal fluctuations, infectious disease outbreaks, and delays in OPD appointments are also considered. Aim: This study explores the connection between ER visits, OPD referrals, and OPD patient volumes at IBHOH over the first half of 2024. The goal is to find trends and correlations and to understand how these factors affect hospital operations. Understanding these trends is crucial for efficiently allocating resources, improving patient flow, and enhancing the quality of care at the hospital. Methodology: The study retrospectively reviews hospital records from January to June 2024. Data is segmented by month and validated against multiple sources to ensure accuracy. The study used SPSS and Python to perform statistical analysis. The trends and correlations are visualized through graphs and charts. To ensure patient confidentiality, the study will adhere to ethical guidelines using aggregated data without personal identifiers. Conclusion: The study reveals a strong link between ER visits, OPD referrals, and OPD patient volume, suggesting strategic improvements that can manage ER congestion and improve patient care and flow. To maintain high-quality patient care and boost operational efficiency, standardizing referral protocols, adjusting staffing based on real-time data, and implementing continuous monitoring systems are recommended

    No full text
The aim of this article is to investigate possibilities of interfaces that intertwine theatrical literary expressions, more precisely the theater of the oppressed by the theater director, playwright and essayist Augusto Boal, and The rope, by the Angolan author Pepetela. In our analytical course, we will focus on Boal proposal and its specificities, especially in the works Theater of the oppressed and other political poetics (1980) and Aesthetics of the oppressed (2009), with a critical and theoretical approach to the concepts of this aesthetic that he wanted, through theatrical techniques and pedagogical, social and political aspects, to encourage the participation and protagonism of the population in the social issues they experienced. Similarly, we will approach the structure and historiographical theme of the play The rope (1978) by Pepetela, which marks the passage of the African author from the novel to the theatrical genre. The work, inserted in the context of the post-independence period, deals with political issues and the struggle for power in Angola. We propose to seek evidence of points of convergence that stand out between the two artistic expressions, in them we access the idea of sensitization to sociopolitical ideals and the exercise of critical thinking regarding the anti-colonialist struggle.
