Building global alliances for public health nutrition training
The purpose of this paper is to present a review of opportunities and challenges for future progress in building intercountry, regional, and global alliances for public health nutrition training. Drawing on experiences from developing, implementing, and evaluating public health nutrition training in Australasia, Europe, and the Middle East, suggestions are provided for building a network of global training activities. Opportunities are described in areas such as standardization of course competencies and registration schemes, resource sharing, student and trainer exchange programs, and professional development. Challenges are identified and options presented for building global alliances in public health nutrition training into the future
Neighbourhood deprivation and outlet density for tobacco, alcohol and fast food: First hints to obesogenic and addictive environments in Germany
Objective: The current discussion regarding “place effects on health” is increasingly focusing on the characteristics of a specific physical environment. Our study investigated whether socially deprived residential areas are more likely than affluent neighborhoods to provide access to addictive substances and fast food.
Design: In this ecological study, the total number of tobacco, alcohol and fast food outlets was recorded and visualized using a Geographic Information System.
Setting: 18 Social areas in Cologne, Germany.
Subjects: A total of 18 social areas in 4 districts of Cologne, Germany, including 92,000 inhabitants, were analyzed.
Results: In the investigation area 339 tobacco, 353 alcohol and 67 fast food outlets were identified. The higher the deprivation indicators in a district, the higher the availability of cigarettes (Kendall’s tau =0.433; p=0.012), alcohol (Kendall’s tau =0.341, p=0.049) and fast food (Kendall’s tau =0.473; p=0.009).
Conclusions: The availability of addictive substances and fast food can be seen as having a contextual influence on the individual’s lifestyle and can, as a physical exposition in form of obesogenic and addictive environments, contribute to a culmination of health risks

Family meals and exposure to TV during dinner: association with fruit and vegetable intake among school children : Trabalho de Investigação : Refeições em família e exposição a TV durante o jantar: associação com o consumo de fruta e hortícolas em crianças em idade escolar
Thesis abstract: Background: Fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake is low among European children. Some recent studies have shown a possible association between family meals and higher F&V consumption among children. Most studies are focused on dinner, few studies looked for the family breakfast. TV switched on during mealtime was shown to be negatively associated with the F&V intake. There is no described information on this subject regarding Swedish school children. Aims: To examine the frequency of family meals (breakfast and dinner), TV switched on during dinner and exposure to TV food commercials as possible correlates of F&V intake among Swedish school children. Methods: A cross-sectional survey performed in Sweden.,from October to December 2003, as part of the Pro Children study. A random sample of 1407 11- year old Swedish children from 49 schools and their parents was included. Data on F&V intake was assessed by a 24-hour recall. Data on the frequency of family meals and presence of TV during dinner, exposure to TV food commercials and socio-demographic characteristics was collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H) were performed to determine whether the F&V consumption was different between genders and among the frequency of family meals, exposure to TV during dinner and exposure toTV food commercials. Chi-square statistics were computed for the frequency of family meals and TV switched on during dinner by sociodemographics
Infant feeding practices among mothers with and without HIV in Western Cape, South Africa
Master i samfunnsernæringThe HIV prevalence in adults and children in South Africa is high. South Africa is also a country where the breastfeeding rate is low and the child mortality rate is high. HIV-infected mothers have to weigh the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (MTCT) through breastfeeding versus the risk of other diseases from formula feeding when choosing infant feeding practice.
In 2007 researches conducted a third and last wave in a panel survey in Khayelitsha. In the last wave questions on infant feeding as well as a qualitative investigation were added. In this master thesis data on infant feeding among 58 HIV-infected mothers (KSPS) and 106 mothers without HIV or with unknown HIV status (KPS) were analysed. Qualitative in-depth interviews in other townships in Western Cape with three female doctors and nine HIV-infected mothers were added to complement the quantitative data.
The main objective was to describe the infant feeding practices of HIV-infected mothers and mothers without HIV or with unknown HIV status living in Western Cape. Secondary objectives were to investigate what advice the mothers had been given about infant feeding when they were pregnant and their knowledge about MTCT and infant feeding.
The percentage of HIV-infected mothers who had been advised to give infant formula and who had been giving formula was high. Among mothers without HIV or with unknown HIV status, on the other hand, a large proportion had been advised to breastfeed and had breastfed their infants. In Western Cape infant formula was supported and provided for HIV-infected mothers while non-infected mothers were recommended to breastfeed exclusively. This might explain the differences between the two groups of mothers
