    DESA1002 'Nine Quarter City' - <Yi Chen Lin>

In this semester my given city is Venice. The first concept that came across my mind is building a public servise building such as hospital, police station or fire station. After analyzing the location of my building, I choose to start from the corner facing the main canal. Building a fire station is my final decision, I tried to analyse all the functions needed as a fire station. It includes fireboat dock, reception, emergency space, office, bedrooms, toilet and shower, common room and recreation area. At the beginning stage I tried to separate the building into two part: private and public area. I tried to build a concrete block contains fireboat dock and bedrooms on the top. This is also the main structure system. After revising all the floor plans, the final building is supported by five reinforced concrete columns and slabs holds up each floor. Unlike first semester all the ideas were simply from my creation and imagination, this project is conducted under constant revising and checking all the factors such as building orientation, neighbor’s building type, traffic circulation and structure system. I learnt to develop a systematic, programmatic way to analyse the building, from its function, location, structure to cladding

The Practice-as-Research Enquiry of \ue2Arts of self-healing\ue2: \ue2Red Bricks as an Example

    No full text
The research idea for this essay emerged from the author's participation in the creation of the exhibition space of Red Bricks (2020) which originally was a piece of theater work. Through the immersive form of art exhibition, the work aims to bring the viewer back to one of the events of the Anti-China Extradition in Hong Kong in 2019 - the Siege of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The author uses the Practice as Research approach (i.e., a research process in which theory and practice are complementary and inseparable) applied by scholar Yi-Chen Wu, in her creative theatre design and links this research on how Expressive Art Therapy can move from the idea of healing the self to the inspiration of creativity. Guided by Practical as Research, the author focuses on art therapist Pat B. Allen's (2013) concept of \ue2Arts of Self-healing\ue2, which is a process of spiritual exploration to break through inner fears and sorrows to find the source of inspiration for creating art and design. This is complemented by Bruce L. Moon's (2011) concept of \ue2Existential Art Therapy\ue2, which explores the answers to life's questions through existentialist philosophy to make art therapy more comprehensive. Apart from helping the author to confront relevant political issues in a positive manner, this direction of research is also effective in enhancing the author's conceptual breakthrough in spatial design. In the process of interweaving spatial design and theories, the author intends to discuss and validate two points. Firstly, how the practical study of \ue2Expressive Art Therapy\ue2 has enabled the author to achieve the effect of \ue2Arts of Self-healing\ue2 in the aesthetic practice of depicting her own insecurities. Secondly, the author has transformed the symbols of painting in the process of \ue2Arts of Self-healing\ue2 into a unique creative inspiration in this study, thus bringing a new dimension to the creation of spatial design
