(52(1):40-49)Effect of Hot-air Drying on the Quality and Germination of I-Lan White Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Seed Bulbs
Garlic (Allium sativum L. cv. ‘I-Lan White’) seed bulbs were exposed to 25°, 30°, 35° or 40℃ hot-air for 0-, 10-, 20-, or 30-day drying. The quality of hot-air dried bulbs was evaluated. Some separated cloves were planted in flats and kept in a 20℃ dark chamber for germination test. Drying at 40℃ caused elevated respiration rate, quality damage, and total loss of germination of the bulbs. Drying at 25°, 30°, or 35℃ for 10 days was enough to produce well-dried firm bulbs, which had low respiration rates. Drying at 25℃ for 20 or 30 days or drying at 30° or 35℃ for 10, 20, or 30 days all resulted in earlier germination after sowing and more rapid seedling elongation compared to the undried control. Although the most effective treatment was 30-day drying at 35℃, 10- or 20- or 30-day drying at 35℃ or 30-day drying at 30℃ all resulted in 3- to 4-week acceleration of achieving 100% germination after sowing. Hot-air drying can be applied to garlic seed bulbs, which would be sown very shortly after harvest
High-temperature Storage for Three Cultivars of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Bulbs
Three cultivars of garlic (Allium sativum L.), which had been kept at summer ambient temperatures for 3.5 months after harvesting and curing were further stored at 20º, 25º, 30º, 35º, or 40ºC for 2, 4, or 6 months. All bulbs stored at 40ºC had severe high-temperature injury after 2 months of storage. ‘Ho-Mei’ and ‘Hwa-Shwan’ stored at 35ºC also had severe high-temperature injury after 4 months of storage. All bulbs stored at 20º or 25ºC had premature bud elongation, sprouting, and/or folding bud growth, which caused gradual losses in weight and marketability of the bulbs. ‘Dah-Pien-Hei’ stored at either 35º or 30ºC and ‘Ho-Mei’ and ‘Hwa-Shwan’ stored at 30ºC were in good condition and maintained at high percentage (>70%) of marketable bulbs after 6 months of storage. Those bulbs, which survived the high-temperature storage, also had a durable shelf-life

A Study of the Classical Landscape at the Wang River Villa of Wang Wei
The landscape of Wang Wei's Wang River Villa is examined by reviewing the essays and papers written about the poetical collaboration, the “Wang River Collection.” The purpose of this paper is to clarify the meaning of villa architecture in China. The author expects that this research will contribute to a mutual understanding between cultures. The villa was a Utopia for Wang. On the other hand, he was a pious Buddhist and Buddhistic concepts are reflected in the landscape. I consider the features of the classical landscape of Xie Lingyun and "Chu Ci," as written in “The Collection,” a reflection of the Buddhistic concept. When considering what the classics meant to Wang Wei, it is apparent that his villa is a representation of the classical landscape. It is not an imitation of the classical landscape, but a unique and original creation of art by Wang.departmental bulletin pape
