Kinect controlled chess playing robot
Tanberk, Senem (Dogus Author) -- Tükel, Dilek (Dogus Author) -- Conference full title: 17th International Conference on Smart Technologies; Ohrid; Macedonia; 6 July 2017 through 8 July 2017.In this project, we developed a chess play system based on Kinect vision sensor, which recognizes different hand gestures as a command and sends these commands to V-REP robotic simulation tool. Delta type robot will play chess according to the commands sent via vision software. In our system, we have tested for 2 different chess opening scenarios and DOF checking mode scenario, then we obtained results. Hence we propose an integration between Kinect hand gestures and V-REP simulation

Tics are sudden, rapid, purposeless, recurrent, non-rhythmic motor movements or vocalizations. There have been previous case reports of various medications causing tics. In this article, we report tic symptoms that we thought developed in association with mirtazapine treatment. Copyright© 2025, Korean College of Neuropsychopharmacology
Esat Mahmut Karakurt`un roman(s)larında erkek kahramanlar
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Esat Mahmut Karakurt (1902-1977) was an influential writer of Turkish
literature in the Republican period, especially with his romance, adventure, and spy
narratives that reached a large female audience. After he published his first collection
of short stories in 1926, Karakurt wrote a total of 16 novels until 1960. His novels,
which were serialized first in newspapers, helped increase their circulation, and most
volumes were reprinted eight to ten times. All Karakurt narratives were adapted at
least once as screenplays.
Because they are not considered “serious” literature, few analyses of popular
romances are available in both Turkish and western literary studies, and the ones that
exist are mostly devoted to women authors and their heroines. Therefore, this thesis
aims both to revitalize the semi-forgotten novelistic romances of an influential
author, and to fill a gap in romance studies by examining a male author’s approach to
romance by analyzing his heroes.
The thesis focuses on two of Esat Mahmut Karakurt’s novels, namely Allaha
Ismarladık (Goodbye, 1936) and İlk ve Son (The First and the Last, 1940), although
frequent references are made to the author’s other novels as well. The theoretical
framework of the study is influenced by Tania Modleski’s and Janice Radway’s
analyses that are guided by feminist and psychoanalytic considerations, as well as by
John G. Cawelti’s work focusing on the structure of romance.
In this three-part thesis, first, the physical, educational, and professional
attributes, the relations of love, and the ideological discourses of the male characters
in Karakurt’s novels are analyzed. It is observed that these heroes are often
handsome bachelors in their thirties, successful at work, and fond of stylish clothing;
their attitude towards women and love is distant; and they share a nationalistic and
conservative worldview. Then, these common traits are discussed in the context of
the generic qualities of romance and what they mean in terms of female readers’
fantasies.Bozkurt, Senem Timuroğl
Cartography of major urban settlements on Saudi Arabian Peninsula between 18th -20th centuries
Duyduk, Senem (Dogus Author)This paper aims to provide a urban morphological analysis of the transformation of Saudi Arabian cities from the late 18th century onwards through a cartographical urban inventory as its basis. The paper focuses on the cartographical information about the major cities in the Saudi Arabian Peninsula associated with the period between late 18th and early 20th centuries. This study was mainly conducted as a survey through the archives that have hitherto been kept closed for research purposes in Turkey. Therefore, a considerable part of sound and concrete information and evidence on Saudi Arabian town planning and urban design, particularly during the Ottoman era, was missing. This paper intends not only to make an inventory of the available maps and plans produced during the period between late 18th and early 20th centuries available in the Ottoman Archives of Turkey, but also to analyze this cartographical information through methods of the discipline of urban morphology and derive basic principles of transformation for Saudi Arabian cities between the late 18th century and early 20th century
Lawmaking through translation: ‘translating’ crimes and punishments
Öner, Senem (Arel Author)This article examines the role translation played in the encounter between legal systems through the examination of the Ottoman Penal Code (1858), which was drafted using the French Penal Code (1810) as the source. The results obtained through the comparative textual analysis of the codes in Ottoman Turkish and French are discussed with respect to the historical/legal circumstances pertinent to the Ottoman modernization/westernization in the Tanzimat (Reorganization) Period. Adherence to the source text norms observed in the translation of the articles on ‘crimes against the state and their punishment’ is argued to reflect the role the Ottoman Code was expected to play in the modernization of the Ottoman Empire. Adherence to the target culture/system norms observed in the translation of the articles on ‘crimes against individuals and their punishment’ is argued to reflect the ongoing power of the then-existing Islamic Ottoman penal law system. It is also claimed that the Ottoman Code belonged to the ‘translated law’ system in the Ottoman-Turkish ‘legal polysystem’. Re-thinking the original-translation binary opposition in the context of the Ottoman Code, it is suggested that the Ottoman Code was a translation which was not produced to be presented/perceived as a translation but so as to entertain the status of an original code in the target system where the translated code was the law itself and had legal binding power. Thus the Ottoman Code functioned both as original and as translation and no power relationship existed between the Ottoman Code and the French Code in terms of their statuses in their respective systems/for their respective audience. Consequent to the observed dynamics of the case in question, in the study lawmaking through translation has been suggested as an alternative term to ‘legal translation’ to explain the specific relationship between making a law and translation where the latter is used as an instrument for the former
"This is not the soldier you know": treason trials and the unmaking of Turkey’s military
My dissertation project is an ethnographic examination of the controversial civilian trials of military officers accused of treason and coup plotting in contemporary Turkey. Since 2008, hundreds of officers of the Turkish Armed Forces have been on trial in multiple cases with allegations ranging from forming a terrorist organization within the state to leaking of state secrets for purposes of military espionage and plotting a coup to overthrow the government. Controversial from beginning to end, the trials of these military officers have been unprecedented in the country’s history where the military has had persistent involvement in politics with rather strong legal immunity. The trials, therefore, constitute a momentous attempt to challenge the military’s legitimacy and debunk its authority. Yet, despite being portrayed as a switch from a historically pervasive military exceptionalism to the rule of law, the whole process has been enmeshed in a web of legal complexity with unclear allegations, multiple waves of police operations, internments and arrests of hundreds of people, and indictments totaling thousands of pages of documents. My dissertation focuses on one of these cases in particular–the Sledgehammer coup trial, an alleged coup plot dating back to 2003, in which 365 officers were indicted in 2010, all of whom were later acquitted in 2015 (despite initially being sentenced to 16-20 years in prison) due to the presence of fabricated evidence. Aiming to capture the tension between a historically pervasive military exceptionalism and the notion of the rule of law, as well as the actors caught between that tension, my dissertation project analyzes what the trials have meant for the military members who, once privileged representatives of the state often situated outside and above civilian legal frameworks, have had to step into the public arena and grapple with their social downfall in multiple realms. Through an eighteen-month ethnographic research that goes from the courtroom and prison to the public protests on the streets of Istanbul and Ankara, and from the private opinion of military officers in good standing to the disrupted lives of the families of the accused servicemen and the public reaction against them, this dissertation project analyzes how, and to what effect, the rhetoric of the rule of law can become a tool to dismantle militaries, revert the exceptional status under which they operate, and in so doing, rearticulate the nation anew.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Senem Kapta
Scalable and Decentralized Algorithms for Anomaly Detection via Learning-Based Controlled Sensing
We address the problem of sequentially selecting and observing processes from a given set to find the anomalies among them. The decision-maker observes a subset of the processes at any given time instant and obtains a noisy binary indicator of whether or not the corresponding process is anomalous. We develop an anomaly detection algorithm that chooses the processes to be observed at a given time instant, decides when to stop taking observations, and declares the decision on anomalous processes. The objective of the detection algorithm is to identify the anomalies with an accuracy exceeding the desired value while minimizing the delay in decision making. We devise a centralized algorithm where the processes are jointly selected by a common agent as well as a decentralized algorithm where the decision of whether to select a process is made independently for each process. Our algorithms rely on a Markov decision process defined using the marginal probability of each process being normal or anomalous, conditioned on the observations. We implement the detection algorithms using the deep actor-critic reinforcement learning framework. Unlike prior work on this topic that has exponential complexity in the number of processes, our algorithms have computational and memory requirements that are both polynomial in the number of processes. We demonstrate the efficacy of these algorithms using numerical experiments by comparing them with state-of-the-art methods.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Signal Processing System
Investigating the autobiography of Murathan Mungan through creative drama
Creative drama helps the child or adult to find the opportunity to understand both the self and the other by means of fiction, based on their own life dynamics. In this study, it is aimed to observe the opinions of the participants about the relationship between the author-poet's life and literary accumulation through creative drama workshops based on the dramatic situations in his life story, which are found in Mungan's autobiographical books "Goblins of Money" and "Map Method Notebook". Observational and focus group interviews were used as a data collection tool in the study which was conducted with descriptive analysis approach which is one of the qualitative research methods. In this study, the of Murathan Mungan's autobiography was examined via creative drama method and interview themes were prepared by the researcher and evaluated by two different field experts in order to observe the participants' opinions about the effects of the author-poet of the autobiography on his authorship and their awareness about themselves. In the study, a ten-item interview was planned by the researcher as a data collection tool, the workshop evaluation outputs obtained with the application of creative drama and the observer's notes were reported and two autobiographical and a book of the author-poet were and many documents were examined. Findings obtained from this study are that the author had been a very good observer since childhood and had a wide imagination, with his art-loving nature had made himself, intensity of dramatic situations in his autobiography had provided him with richness of life, but life alone had not been sufficent to be an author nor to be proliferant, with his strong character, talent, curiosity and desire the author had been the discoverer of himself and participants had been of the opionion that they had been excited and eager about reading and writing along the process. It was found that Murathan Mungan's autobiography might be beneficial for the leaders who will work in the field of creative drama in terms of its effects on authorship and the experiential wealth it provides to the participants.
