The revision of an orientalist to a reoriented image : Arab women in The Algerian Quartet by Assia Djebar

No full text
This thesis focuses on the work of Assis Djebar, one of the greatest representatives of Francophone Maghreb literature. It draws on numerous works on this literature already published by modifying their approach and adding a personal perspective to show how this postcolonial writer renews the representation of Arab women. The first part of this study shows how the popular stereotypes invented by Orientalists reduced women to fantasmatic and aesthetic objects but the contribution of certain theories (postcolonial and feminist) have allowed the deconstruction of this Orientalism and its underlying ideology. The second part shows how Assia Djebar’s writing fits into the postcolonial feminist perspective. The author attributes many Algerian women characters with sensibilities, expressive modes, social and historical roles that make them fully-rounded and complex people. The third part focuses on the self-portrait of the author as a woman of Arab-Berber origin who recognises herself as a cultural and identity hybrid, reflected in the generic, poetic and linguistic innovations of her work

Three-dimensional CFD modeling of transport phenomena in multi-channel anode-supported planar SOFCs

No full text
In this study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is developed and applied for anode-supported planar SOFC involving multi-channels. The developed model is first validated in agreement with the experimental data obtained at same conditions. Three different flow arrangements (co-, counter- and cross-flow) are simulated and compared in terms of cell overall performance and various transport phenomena occurred inside the SOFC single cell functional components. Local distribution of temperature, mass flow rate, current density, gas concentrations of reactants and products in both fuel and air sides under different flow arrangements is predicted and presented. It is found that the co-flow and counter-flow arrangements have a better performance than that of the cross-flow arrangement at the same operating conditions. It is also found that the temperature for the three flow arrangements is unevenly distributed and the significant temperature gradients exist along the length of the cell. The mass flow rate of fuel at the inlet of each channel is uniform, however its difference between the side channel and the channel at the center is increasing along the fuel flow direction, which reaches a maximum value at the outlet region. It is also predicted that the maximum current density is located at the interfaces between the channels, ribs and the electrodes resulting in a large over-potential and a heat source in the electrodes, which is harmful to the cell overall performance and working life time. Signal amplification is crucial in developing a reliable disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs)-based biosensor for analyte detection with a narrow detection window. This work demonstrated a novel label-free electrochemical aptasensor based on SPCEs for the ultrasensitive detection of ochratoxin A (OTA). The graphene oxide-DNA (GO-DNA) complex as a signal amplifier with easy preparation was investigated for the first time. The proposed aptasensor based on the SPCEs/GO/cDNA-aptamer/3D-rGO-AuNPs structure was formed through the hybridization of aptamer-linked 3D-rGO/AuNPs and its complementary DNA-linked GO (GO-cDNA). The presence of OTA was discerned by its specific aptamer forming a curled OTA-aptamer complex and releasing the GO-cDNA from the surface of SPCEs. The resulting OTA-aptamer complex hindered interfacial electron transfer on the sensing surface, leading to the decreased peak current. The GO-cDNA further amplified the peak current change. This electrochemical aptasensor showed a low limit of detection of 5 fg/mL as well as good reproducibility with the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.38%. Moreover, the detection result of OTA in the rice and oat samples was comparable with that of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. In general, the OTA aptasensor used in this work with convenient preparation, low-cost, good selectivity, high sensitivity and acceptable reproducibility can be proposed as a reliable point-of-care (POC) technique for OTA determination

Root Respiration–Trait Relationships Are Influenced by Leaf Habit in Tropical Plants

No full text
Root respiration is a critical physiological trait that significantly influences root system activity. Recent studies have associated root respiration with the economic functioning of roots; however, research on root respiration in tropical plants remains limited. This study examined the fine root respiration and the relationship between root respiration and root chemical and morphological traits in 16 tropical plant species, including both evergreen and deciduous species. Findings revealed that deciduous species exhibited higher root respiration compared to evergreen species. Root respiration positively correlated with root nitrogen concentration and specific root length and correlated negatively with root diameter and root tissue density across all species. The root respiration patterns in evergreen species aligned with those seen in all tree species, while deciduous species showed a distinct negative correlation with root tissue density and no significant correlations with other root traits. Principal component analysis revealed that the patterns of root variation in both evergreen and deciduous trees were multidimensional, with deciduous trees exhibiting acquisitive traits and evergreen trees displaying conservative traits. Random forest and multiple regression analysis showed that specific root length exerted the most significant influence on root respiration in both evergreen and deciduous trees. These findings are ecologically significant, enhancing our understanding of root respiration in tropical plants and its impact on ecosystem functions. They contribute valuable insights and support the conservation and management of tropical vegetation
