Genre and identity in the work of David Grossman.

David Grossman is a central figure in Israeli literature. Widely translated, his work has achieved international acclaim for its bold and innovative engagement in the events and mood of the day. In this study, the first monograph on his work in English, I focus on his process of constructing identity through storytelling. Key themes of identity---adolescence and parent-child relationships, sexuality and the body-soul dichotomy---are interwoven into diverse literary genres. My method is to examine the paradigms and significance of Grossman's literary genres, placing them in the context of Israeli and Western literature. I analyse his technique of manipulating traditional structural features of these genres to reveal the ambiguities and changing nature of identity. I show how he acknowledges his literary forefathers by his use of intertext to develop identity. I contend that Grossman's focus on the adolescent protagonist pinpoints a young person's confrontation with his inherited identity. I discuss The Book of Intimate Grammar as zntx-Bildungsroman, illustrating the instability experienced en route to a cogent sense of self and an accommodation with the adult world. Grossman breaks new ground in his seminal work of Holocaust fiction, See under: Love. Moving beyond the sphere of witness accounts and their consequent fiction, he uses a fragmented plot and complex narratives, revealing the impossibility of viewing the Holocaust as a single synchronic story, exposing the damaged identities that remain. In Be My Knife, his more recent epistolary novel, I find a shift in his construction of identity. Rhythms of internal and external languages combine in this exploration of sexuality and parenthood. I suggest that his narrative techniques of multiple voices and indeterminate endings enhance reader involvement. They are a call to share Grossman's enduring commitment to a "wide-hearted humanism". This credo involves creating an ethical identity of self-examination, facilitating the recognition of difference in self and others, as evidenced in his socio-political novel and essays. I highlight Grossman's artistry: his sensitivity to registers of language, expressing sociological aspects of Israeli life in the past decades. Ultimately, for Grossman, both the world and the "I" are but a narrative

Ideological Words and Words from Life in Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman

No full text
The author carries out an analysis of linguistic aspects in “Life and Fate” by V. Grossman. The analysis points out two kinds of communication in the novel: the totalitarian communication versus the antitotalitarian one. Their linguistic and communicative features are then described taking into account different examples and a special emphasis is put on how do they cooperate to the narrative-thematic construction of the novel. The author shows as well how these linguistic structures express some central point of Grossman conception of human being and of the aim of art

The determinants of the health status in a developing country: results form the colombian case

ABSTRACT This paper tries to find empirical evidence of the health determinants, as a measure of health capital in a developing country after a deep reform of its health-care sector. It follows the Grossman model (1972) and also takes, besides individual and socioeconomic variables, institutional factors of the health sector. Two surveys from 1997 and 2000 in Colombia, with a subjective (self-report) health status of the individuals, and information about the health system affiliation type, were used. The estimation method is an order probit model. At the end, the results show an important connection between individual, institutional and socioeconomic variables with the health status of a person in Colombia. The effect of the type of access to medical care strengths the inequities in health outcome. This article correspond to the chronicle of a trip, both ways, through the high Coco River and the rivers Waspuk, Pis Pis and Bocay carried out by the missionary brothers Grossman and Garth by the end of 1905. The annotations of the author reveal the existence of important communities in places that they visited during their journey, places like Wasla, Saupuka, Kislaya, Leymus and some others. He dwells on the rivers’ floods and the visit that they made to the miskito King Andrew. He was witness to ancestral traditions, so that he can describe healing rituals among the Indians, nourishments that they consumed and other ancient customs, both among the miskito as well as the sumu. Albeit the voyage was over water most of the time, they also participated on cavalcades trough the rain forest, where they could observe rubber, sugar cane, cacao and banana plantations. Leggere Grossman in tempo di guerra

In this article we suggest a reading of Everything flows, the celebrated short novel of Gulag Literature by Vasily Grossman, based on a project carried out in 2021-22 with students in their final year of high school. The analysis was conducted through a workshop that brought the students closer to the work on variants performed by the author. Our aim was to make students appreciate the linguistic and stylistic work of refinement accomplished by Grossman, and at the same time to make them reflect on the gradual transformation of the author, who was a reliable interpreter of Socialist realism when he wrote the first draft of the novel, and in the last variant became a dissident irreconcilable with the Soviet system
