Summary:
Alterity was produced in 2011 as a gesture of conceptual engagement and clarification bridging two converging cinematographic ideas. On the one hand, the film reinforces the influence of “brute reality and the asininities of destiny” (Steven Bode and Sara Raza; 2011; Ergin Cavusoglu – Alterity), alluding to Robert Bresson’s film ‘Au Hazard, Balthazar’. On the other hand, it invokes directly in its iconography and symbolism a key element in Çavuşoğlu’s video work from 2010 entitled Crystal & Flame (2010). One screen of this multichannel video installation shows a narrator telling a story about an alternate economy and illicit trade of smuggling that employs children to transport black market goods on donkeys’ backs between the landmine-strewn Turkish and Syrian border, resulting in inevitable death. In Bresson’s film, a humble donkey enacts its own “lumpen via dolorosa, as it is passed on from owner and subjected to increasing indignities” (Bode and Raza; 2011). Alterity thus fuses the two tales intentionally bypassing the ill fate of the children in both stories to depict the donkey as the martyred central protagonist in a suspense-ridden tale of morality and treason set against the rural and rugged scenes of nature. The film was produced in Bressonian ascetic style working with non-professional actors on location in Malkara. The landscape is reminiscent of the one in Bresson’s film - the Pre-Pyrenees in France

AbstractIt is very well known in the knowledge management literature that knowledge has become an engine of social, economic and cultural development in today's world. Involvement of education in economic growth occurs through creation of new knowledge and transfer of knowledge and information. Better educated individuals will later become an innovator or creator of new technology. Schools provide the education necessary to understand this new information and technology. Education is a vital factor for the accumulation of intellectual capital to reach economic growth. As a small developing island with its eleven universities, government assigning education is one of the locomotive sectors of the North Cyprus economy. Today's globalised world, transforming economies from traditional labour based production technique to modern knowledge based production technique is inevitable. Rise of knowledge and technology- intensive jobs and economic activities, investment in knowledge based assets and increasing well qualified and educated workforces indicates the knowledge based economic transformation is necessary and inevitable for rapid economic growth. The main purpose of this paper is to point out knowledge and knowledge based economies and creates both the public and government awareness about knowledge based economy in North Cyprus. The paper also investigates the importance of human capital, intellectual capital and intangible assets in production process and emphasizes the importance of technology based highly productive production systems and their impact on economic development. “Inspired by Italian author Italo Calvino’s unfinished book of lectures, Six Memos for the Next Millennium (1988), Ergin Çavuşoğlu weaves three seemingly unconnected but ultimately complimentary narratives into a dramatic meditation on social norms and moral codes. In one scenario, a man is seen cutting and polishing a diamond; in another, a group of actors rehearses The House with the Mezzanine, an 1896 play by Anton Chekov about a clash between peasants and city dwellers; and in a third, a group of friends discusses, over a Turkish meal, a proposed film about children forced to smuggle black-market goods across the treacherous Turkish-Syrian border. Where Calvino explores the application of ideas around polarity and regenerative force in a literary context, Çavuşoğlu makes them visual through the metaphorical opposition of images of crystal (the diamond) and flame (the restaurant’s grill).” (text from the Guggenheim Museum’s online collection catalogue)
Dust Breeding (2016)
“As its title suggests, Ergin Çavuşoğlu’s installation Dust Breeding makes reference to American photographer and painter Man Ray’s famous 1920 photograph Dust Breeding (Duchamp’s Large Glass with Dust Motes), which depicts the named artist’s iconic work in the studio having accumulated a year’s worth of environmental dirt. Çavuşoğlu’s reworking of this project also revolves around the documentation of ephemeral matter. The artist invites visitors to walk across a section of an anamorphic floor drawing based on a three-dimensional model of a cement factory in Turkey. Recording their actions with a closed-circuit television camera, he uses a monitor to relay the surreal-looking images, which seem to show visitors standing inside a sculpture.” (text from the Guggenheim Museum’s online collection catalogue
Volunteer subtitle translator organizations as a model for a social constructivist approach
El punt de partida d’aquest estudi és la suposició que les organitzacions de voluntaris són exemples d’un enfocament social constructivista en la formació de traductors. Aquesta premissa es basa en la idea que hi ha una comunitat de traductors voluntaris que han participat activament en el procés de traducció i alguns d’ells fins i tot han començat a treballar com a professionals per a canals de televisió i agències a Turquia. La base del meu estudi de recerca se centra principalment en l’aspecte col·laboratiu de l’Enfocament Constructivista Social i que aquesta mateixa característica col·laborativa es pot trobar en el fòrum d’organitzacions de subtituladors voluntaris en línia. A l’analitzar dues plataformes d’organitzacions de subtituladors voluntaris i també l’Enfocament Constructivista Social en la formació de traductors, s’extreuen característiques similars per permeten inferir si les organitzacions de traductors voluntaris poden ser un exemple d’Enfocament Constructivista Social en la formació de subtituladors. El corpus d’aquest estudi està format per dades extretes de dos llocs web diferents d’organitzacions de traductors voluntaris en línia (www.turkcealtyazi.org / https://www.planetdp.org/). A més, defineixo les principals característiques del model constructivista social en la formació de l’traductor i analitzo les seves aplicacions a l’aula per poder identificar la pràctica d’aquesta proposta formativa en un entorn real. Les organitzacions voluntàries de subtitulació també són analitzades i descrites a partir de secció del fòrum. Els punts similars de cada plataforma permeten l’encreuament des del punt de vista tant del procés de subtitulació com de la col·laboració que s’hi estableix. Les dades empíriques es recullen i s’analitzen les mostres seleccionades de tots dos llocs web en el marc de l’enfocament social constructivista i els aspectes que defineixen la bona pràctica de subtitulació, tots ells extrets de la secció del fòrum dels llocs web analitzats. La relació persona a persona en la comunitat de voluntaris en línia es pot observar analitzant la secció de fòrum i les dades proporcionades es comparen i s’analitzen per saber com s’estableix el procés de traducció i com millora la qualitat des subtítols elaborats pels traductors voluntaris gràcies a la col·laboració / cooperació en línia. Després de recollir dades sobre les característiques de la plataforma en línia, aquestes dades es comparen amb el model de l’Enfocament constructivista social en la formació dels traductors per conèixer les similituds pel que fa a les relacions entre els membres, el procés de subtitulació, la distribució de tasques, etc. . Mi corpus para este estudio consta de dos sitios web diferentes de organizaciones de traductores voluntarios en línea (www.turkcealtyazi.org / https://www.planetdp.org/). Además, defino las principales características del modelo constructivista social en la formación del traductor y analizo sus aplicaciones en el aula para poder identificar posteriormente la práctica del mismo en un entorno real. Las organizaciones voluntarias de subtituladores también son analizadas y descritas con respecto a su sección de foro. Los puntos similares de cada plataforma permiten el cruce desde el punto de vista tanto del proceso de trabajo de subtitulado como de la colaboración. Los datos empíricos se recogen analizando las muestras seleccionadas de ambos sitios web en el marco del enfoque social constructivista y los ítems de la buena práctica de subtitulado extraídos de la sección de foros de los sitios web indicados. La relación persona a persona en la comunidad de voluntarios en línea se puede observar analizando la sección del foro y los datos proporcionados se comparan y analizan para conocer en profundidad el proceso de traducción y la mejora de los traductores voluntarios gracias a la colaboración / cooperación en línea. Después de recoger datos sobre las características de la plataforma en línea, estos datos se comparan con el modelo del enfoque constructivista social en la formación de traductores para conocer las similitudes en cuanto a las relaciones que se establecen entre los miembros, el proceso de subtitulado, la distribución de tareas, etc. Se analiza en profundidad la relación entre las organizaciones de voluntariado en línea con la formación de traductores. Estos datos permiten establecer de qué manera la organización de voluntariado en línea es similar a un modelo constructivista social en la formación de traductores.The starting point of this study is the assumption that volunteer organizations are examples of a social constructivist approach in training translators. This assumption is based on the idea that there is a community of volunteer translators that have been actively involved in the translation process and that some of them have even started to work as professionals for TV channels and agencies in Turkey. The basis of my research study primarily focuses on the collaborative side of the Social Constructivist Approach to teaching and the same collaborative feature in the forum of online volunteer subtitle organizations. By analyzing both platforms of volunteer subtitle translator organizations and also a Social Constructivist Approach in translator training, similar characteristics are extracted to see if volunteer translator organizations can be a model for a Social Constructivist Approach to translator training in subtitle translation. My corpus for this study consists of two different websites of online volunteer translator organizations (www.turkcealtyazi.org / https://www.planetdp.org/). Further, I define the main features of the Social Constructivist model in translator education and analyze its applications in classroom settings, then to be able to identify the practice of it in a real setting. The volunteer subtitling organizations’ forum sections are also analyzed and described. Common features of each platform allow cross-referencing from the viewpoint of both the subtitling work process and collaboration. Empirical data is collected through analyzing selected samples from both websites in the framework of the social constructivist approach and items of good subtitling practice were extracted from the forum section of the websites. Person-to-person relationships in the online volunteer community can be observed by analyzing the forum section and the data provided is compared and analyzed to reach an idea about the translation process and the improvement of the volunteer translators with regards to collaboration/cooperation in the online volunteer organization. After collecting data on the features of the online platform, it is compared with the model of the social constructivist approach in translator education to find out the similarities in terms of the relations between members, the process of subtitling, the distribution of tasks, and so on. The Sun Rises in the West and Sets in the East

The Sun Rises in the West and Sets in the East is a contemporary art exhibition that poetically reimagines seismic cultural shifts through the reclassification of science, philosophy, and economics, which have collapsed and fallen into an arbitrary order (or disorder) in society. The exhibition borrows and reworks its title and main critical inquiry from one of the final “signs of the hour,” inspired by indigenous Islamic eschatological prophecies.2 These prophecies are based on a series of dramatic events concerning cosmological, intellectual, natural, and political order in the lead up to the Day of Judgment, including a rise in ignorance and moral corruption, ecological disasters, and the reversal of the rotation of the Sun from West to East and the darkening of the Earth, which gives this exhibition its title. The art and artists presented unite to create a non-didactic constellation of counter-narratives that explore how traditional structures have been abandoned for new orders in contemporary society. Exploring the disordering effects of globalization and disparity on entire societies, economies, and cultures, The Sun Rises in the West and Sets in the East offers fluid artistic proposals for disrupting exploitative systems that are rooted in imperialism, homogeny, power, and position. Several urgent themes overlap concerning the renewed and interrelated remnants of colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism, and are explored via human geographical patterns of exile and return, contraband as a poetic device, and the disorienting effects of the lack of social and political equilibrium. As such, the artworks in this exhibition highlight interconnected histories and concepts, accessible from multiple entry points, and resulting in a fluid cross-circulation of meaning and visual cultural knowledge.
Transactions are also examined in Ergin Çavuşoğlu’s two-channel video installation, Lundy, Louis, Barge and Troy (2014). Two contrasting screens present themes of surveillance (from above) and sousveillance (which takes place from below). One screen features the underwater ruins of ships from an Allied fleet, known as Lundy, Louis, and Barge, that were deliberately sunk during the WWI Gallipoli Campaign (1915–16). At that time, Great Britain and its allies attempted to undermine the Ottoman Empire, as part of a larger plan that led to the empire’s eventual dissolution. The second screen features a scenic view of the seabed and documents the traffic of sea vessels as they cross the waters. The two juxtaposing works present the historical manipulation of maritime routes that are associated with imperialism and trade, and allude to the establishment of new world orders. Moving between subterranean and overground networks Lundy, Louis, Barge and Troy illuminates what Çavuşoğlu has frequently spoken about as the end points where Europe and Asia meet, highlighting complex historical and contemporary geopolitical crossroads
Let’s hear the voice of voice actors! Exploring the role of voice actors in the process of dubbing translation
Dubbing has been the dominant modality for conveying foreign media productions in Turkey for several decades. In the chain of dubbing translation, by the time the process is completed, there is a varied group of people from translators to voice actors, editors, and dubbing specialists that play a role in the many-sided process of dubbing. With the aim of reaching an impeccable outcome, the steps of dubbing (script and timing, casting, recording, editing) must be completed in a harmonious way. Some studies have been conducted on dubbing in Turkey in terms of translation quality (Sayman), censorship (Okyayuz), and translation strategies (Tekin); however, non-translation issues such as the performance of voice actors have not been explored. This paper offers further insight into the process of dubbing by distributing a survey to ten voice actors to evaluate the impact of translation on their end during the voicing process, their attitudes toward translators, and the translation along with their expectations from translators. Upon compiling the responses from the professional voice actors, the data is analyzed and discussed togain a better understanding of the process. The results indicated that the voicing process is mainly affected by the quality of translation and that there are challenges that arise from it. Therefore, to some extent, voice actors also intervene in the translated dialogues while recording. Overall, the end product, which is the translated dialogues, represents not only the work of the translator but also the voice actors.El doblaje es desde hace varias décadas la modalidad dominante para transmitir producciones de medios extranjeros en Turquía. En la cadena de traducción de doblaje, cuando se completa el proceso, hay un grupo variado de personas, desde traductores hasta actores de doblaje, editores y especialistas en doblaje, que desempeñan un papel en el proceso multifacético del doblaje. Con el objetivo de alcanzar un resultado impecable, las etapas del doblaje (guion y programación, castin, grabación, edición) deben realizarse de forma armoniosa. Se han realizado algunos estudios sobre el doblaje en Turquía en términos de calidad de la traducción (Sayman), censura (Okyayuz) y estrategias de traducción (Tekin); sin embargo, no se han explorado cuestiones ajenas a la traducción, como la actuación de los actores de doblaje. Este artículo ofrece más información sobre el proceso de doblaje mediante la distribución de una encuesta a diez actores de doblaje para evaluar el impacto de la traducción en su parte durante el proceso de doblaje, sus actitudes hacia los traductores y la traducción junto con sus expectativas de los traductores. Al recopilar las respuestas de los locutores profesionales, los datos se analizan y discuten para comprender mejor el proceso. Los resultados indicaron que el proceso de sonorización se ve afectado principalmente por la calidad de la traducción y que de ella surgen desafíos. Por lo tanto, en cierta medida, los locutores también intervienen en los diálogos traducidos durante la grabación. En general, el producto final, que son los diálogos traducidos, representa no solo el trabajo del traductor sino también el de los actores de doblaje
Okul çağı çocuklarında saç bitinin saptanmasında iki tarağın karşılaştırılması
Manisa'nın farklı iki köyündeki ilköğretim okullarında okuyan yaşları 7 ile 15 arasındaki iki öğrenci grubunda, metal diş aralıkları birbirinden farklı iki bit tarağının tanısal etkinlikleri gözle muayene yöntemiyle karşılaştırılarak değerlendirildi. Bunun için Çavuşoğlu köyündeki 95 çocukta Tarak A (diş aralığı 0.18 mm), Yeşilköy' deki 146 çocukta ise Tarak B ile (diş aralığı 0.15 mm) saç biti (Pediculus capitis) varlığı araştırıldı. Çavuşoğlu köyündeki 95 çocuğun 5'inde (% 5,3) ve Yeşilköy'deki 146 çocuğun 5'inde (%3.4) tarama ile canlı saç bitine rastlanırken gözle muayene ile ise hiç saç bitine rastlanmadı. İki kohort arasındaki saç biti infestasyon oranları arasındaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmadı (p>0.05). Gözle muayene sırasında, Çavuşoğlu ve Yeşilköy okullarındaki sırasıyla 15 ve 16 çocukta bit yumurtasına rastlandı, ancak hiçbirinde canlı saç bitine rastlanmadı. Tarama ile ise sırasıyla 5 ve 8 çocukta bit yumurtası görüldü ve bunların sırasıyla 3 ve 5 tanesi sadece tarama sırasında görülüp gözle muayenede görülmedi. Yapılan değerlendirmede, saç bitinin tanısında taramanın gözle muayeneye kıyasla daha etkili olduğu ve karşılaştırılan iki tarağın tanısal etkinlik ya da kullanım kolaylığı açılarından birbirlerinden farklı olmadıkları gösterildiThe diagnostic efficacies of two metal pin lice combs having different spacing between their teeth were compared in two cohorts of school children, aged between 7 and 15 years, from different villages of Manisa, Turkey. Head lice infestation was evaluated with comb A (0.18 mm of distance between the teeth) in 95 children in Cavusoglu village, and with comb B (0.15 mm of distance between the teeth) in 146 children in Yesilköy village, compared to visual inspection. Five of 95 (5.3%) children in Cavusoglu village and 5 of 146 (3.4%) children in Yesilköy village were found to harbor live head lice with combing, while none was detected during the visual inspection. The difference between the infestation rates of two cohorts was statistically insignificant (p>0.05). With visual screening, 15 and 16 children with louse eggs were identified in Cavusoglu and Yesilköy villages, respectively. With combing in these villages, 5 and 8 children, respectively, with louse eggs were identified and 3 and 5 children, respectively, were detected only with combing, not with visual screening. In conclusion, combing is more effective than visual inspection in head lice detection, but there were no significant difference between the two combs either in lice detection or in usage
Patterns of collaboration in four scientific disciplines of the Turkish collaboration network
Scientific collaboration networks, as a prototype of complex evolving networks, are studied in many aspects of their structure and evolving characteristics. The organizing principles of these networks also vary in different scientific disciplines, demonstrating that each discipline has specific connecting rules. Retrieving the co-authorship data from the ISI Web of Science, we constructed networks of four disciplines (engineering, mathematics, physics and surgery) as a subset of the Turkish scientific collaboration network spanning 33 years' data, To provide a comparative perspective on the network topologies, we studied some statistical and topological properties such as the number of authors, degree distributions, authors per paper and papers per author histograms and distributions. These properties yield that the rapid growth of high education in Turkey (i.e. doubling of the number of universities and students within the last decade) had boosted the number of publications and increased the level of collaborations in the scientific collaboration networks. We showed the occurrence of Matthew effect in career longevity distributions, and also outlined the Heaps' law relation in the scaling of the collaborations as well. We outlined the prominent properties of each subset, while the similarities and deviations from the interdisciplinary networks are also evaluated. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
In-vitro activity of rifabutin against rifampicin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates with known rpoB mutations
ABSTRACTThe relationship between resistance to rifampicin and rifabutin and genetic alterations in the rpoB gene of 41 rifampicin-resistant isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was evaluated. Although 35 isolates with rifampicin MICs ≥ 32 mg/L were also rifabutin-resistant, six isolates with rifampicin MICs of 2-16 mg/L were susceptible to rifabutin (MIC ≤ 0.5 mg/L). Mutations Asp516Val, Asp516Tyr, Leu533Pro and the double mutation Met515Ile and Leu533Pro influenced susceptibility to rifampicin, but not to rifabutin. All mutations at codons 531 and 526, except one isolate with a His526Cys mutation, correlated with resistance to both compounds
Successful treatment of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumanii ventriculitis with intravenous and intraventricular colistin
Management of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDRAB) meningitis/ventriculitis is a difficult therapeutic problem owing to the limited penetration of antibiotics into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A 2-month-old girl with ventriculitis caused by MDRAB is reported. Despite therapy with intravenous (IV) colistin ventricular fluid, cultures remained positive for MDRAB. Institution of combination therapy with IV and intraventricular colistin resulted in a successful clinical and microbiological outcome. Intraventricular/intrathecal and IV colistin might be the best therapeutic option in the treatment of central nervous system infection caused by MDRAB. Further studies are required to evaluate pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters of combined IV and intraventricular/intrathecal colistin administration, especially in children
