Word order, information structure and agreement in Teke-Kukuya

This thesis first provides a grammar sketch of Teke-Kukuya which is a Bantu language spoken in the Republic of Congo, covering the topics on its segmental phonology and prosodic system, noun classes and noun phrases, verbal morphology and TAM conjugations, as well as some syntactic issues based on newly collected data. The second part of the thesis investigates the interaction between syntax and information structure in this language. The author discusses word order variation and expressions of information structure with particular interests in a dedicated immediate-before-verb (IBV) focus position in this language. Since the IBV focus construction shares many grammatical properties with clefts, both segmentally and tonally, the author makes the hypothesis that diachronically the IBV focus strategy originates from a basic cleft, and it has been grammaticalised towards a monoclausal focus construction. The thesis also gives a synchronic analysis on the structural representation of the IBV focus construction, discussing the subject agreement asymmetry in subject/non-subject relatives and the associated class 1 subject marking alternation in the IBV focus construction.Language Use in Past and Presen

That the cities begin to lose their identities, traditions and cultures in the last period of the Ottoman Empire is almost simultaneous with the attempts towards Westernization/modernization. Both Ottoman and Republican modernization affects particularly the social life in Istanbul directly. The effect of modernization attempts on life in Istanbul has also been the subject of many literary works written since the Tanzimat. Having constructed the cases in her novels in Istanbul generally, Halide Edib Adıvar addresses the impact of socio-cultural and economic changes on place, particularly upon Westernization, as in many of the Tanzimat and early Republican novels. Transferring the socio-cultural changes in Istanbul to the fiction in the context of both moving away from cultural values and destroying the civilization reserves of the city, the author interprets the disembodying of the architecture and cultural elements, which constitute the dynamics of the city, within the framework of an imitative Westernization. In this article, the relationship between city and identity, culture, civilization belonging and Westernization will be examined in a sociological perspective in Halide Edib’s novels

Genetic parameters and genetic trend of some yield traits of Holstein Friesian cattle population in Tropical Region (Teke)

This study was conducted to determine the milk yield and reproduction characteristics, genetic trend, and breeding values of Holstein cattle reared in Teke region (Antalya, Burdur, Denizli, and Isparta provinces) of Turkey. In this study, 9844 lactation and reproductive records of Holstein Friesian dairy cattle for the period of 2010 to 2017 were used. For this purpose, variance components and the heritability were calculated based on calving interval (CI) and number of inseminations per conception (NIC) from fertility characteristics and lactation length (LL), 305-day milk yield (305 DMY), and dry period (DP). It was determined that CI, NIC, LL, 305 DMY, and DP were 0.11, 0.10, 0.11, 0.33, and 0.01, respectively. The genetic trend of 305 DMY was 111.5 kg/year. The average breeding value was negative between 2005 and 2009 and positive between 2010 and 2015. In conclusion, the fact that especially 305 DMY heritability was generally higher in this study than the values reported by other studies conducted in Turkey and the genetic trend for 305 DMY was positive and high indicates that breeding value of Holstein cattle in the Teke region is high. Therefore, it can be recommended to continue the pedigree breeding of Holstein cattle in this region, keep pedigree and yield records meticulously, estimate breeding values for selecting animals with superior yield characteristics and using them in future generations, and include current biotechnological methods in breeding program to increase the efficiency in selection. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V

The water hammer problem and its numerical analysis

This dissertation involves mathematical models of water flow in a pipeline system. The topic has been studied for a long time, such that water distribution systems have evolved in the past few decades, and mathematical models also evolved from linear to nonlinear models, from incompressible to compressible models and also from systems with infinite space domain to systems with boundary conditions, etc. In my research, I managed to analyze the water flow by a 1d Euler equation with dynamical boundary conditions, where the dynamical boundary conditions are in terms of the valve in the middle of the pipe that can be fast closed, causing hydraulic shock which we call the water hammer inside the pipe. This Euler equation system with dynamical boundary conditions is new and is inspired by switch differential algebraic equations (sDAE) proposed by Prof. Stephan Trenn, which is a system consisting of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and algebraic equations. The valve closing and opening can be modeled as the switching signals of different systems, and accordingly in the partial differential equation (PDE) system they can be modeled as changing boundary conditions. Therefore, throughout my research, I performed the analysis by separating the cases that are before and after the valve closure, both in theoretical and numerical ways
