    The Effectiveness of “Personal Vocabulary Note (PVN)” Technique to Increase Vocabulary

    Vocabulary is one of the most important language components, which has to be mastered and acquired by the students in learning a new language. Vocabularies are totals number of word which (with rule for combining them) makes up a language. In the simple definition, it is known that vocabulary is a list of words. In achieving English vocabularies, it is needed effective way. One of the ways to learn English vocabulary is by using Personal Vocabulary Note (PVN). The researcher conducted this research to answer two questions, namely: 1) How many is the score of the students before being taught by using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) and after being taught by using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN)? 2)  How effective is Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) in increasing the students‘ vocabulary achievement?  After taking and analyzing the data, the researcher concluded the finding of the research. From the research which had been conducted, it could be known that Personal Vocabulary Note (PVN) was effective to increase the students‘ vocabulary achievement. It could be known from the test. In analyzing the test, the researcher used t-test to know the t-value from the result of pre-test and post-test.  The result of t-value was 10, 929. It was higher than t-table with level significant 5% which showed 2, 069.

    Grammatical Cohesive Devices of Students Writing Recount Text in Vocational High School

    This study aims to identify the types and the meaning of grammatical cohesive devices in students’ recount texts. The object of the study was 26 recount texts written by tenth-grade students. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using qualitative content analysis as proposed by Mayring (2014), involving categorization, abstraction, and coding based on Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion framework. The analysis revealed 590 instances of grammatical cohesive devices. Reference was the most frequently used, occurring 460 times, indicating students’ strong dependence on personal and demonstrative references to maintain coherence. Conjunctions were the second most common, with 129 instances, demonstrating their role in connecting events and ideas. Substitution appeared only once, while ellipsis was not found in any of the texts. The study concludes that reference and conjunction are the dominant cohesive devices used by students in constructing recount texts, helping to maintain the logical flow and coherence of their narratives. The rare use of substitution and the absence of ellipsis suggest these forms are less familiar to students and require further instructional emphasis. This analysis highlights the importance of grammatical cohesion in supporting the clarity and unity of student writing

    Language has an important role for every member of the speech community. The connection between language and society is recognized as the main interest of sociolinguistics. Nowadays, sociolinguistic has involved many significant research topics. One of them is the relationship between gender and language. Studies about gender differences have been conducted for many years, which also deals with the use of a language as a foreign language. For instance, studying English as a foreign language (EFL) among the nonnative speakers and its gender-sensitive investigation. The current article provides insights on gender differences among senior high school students with a focus on their writing ability. The purposes of this article were to find the linguistic feature that male and female students tend to use and to find out the gender differences reflected on the students writing ability. The article used a qualitative design with document analysis as the approach. The subject of this article was one class of X MIPA 2 at MAN 6 Jombang. The source of the data was students’ writings, while the data were all linguistics components of the students’ works. The data contain some types of linguistic features based on Mulac’s theory. This article found four linguistic features used by the students. It can be concluded that males often used locative feature and females often used a reference to quantity feature and “I” reference feature.

    Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap apakah siswa dari BEST mengucapkan kata-kata monophthong dengan benar atau tidak dan alasan mengapa mereka salah pengucapan. Monophthong adalah salah satu jenis suara vokal yang sering ditemukan dalam bahasa Inggris dan biasanya juga digunakan dalam komunikasi. Ini adalah suara tunggal dalam satu suku kata. Objek penelitian ini adalah siswa-siswi Basic English Station atau yang lebih dikenal dengan BEST. Kursus Bahasa Inggris yang berlokasi di Jombang, Jawa Timur ini difokuskan pada keterampilan berbicara siswa yang diajarkan dari dasar hingga menguasainya. Namun peneliti hanya memilih siswa tahap terakhir yaitu tingkat mahir / TC karena peneliti menganggap mereka lebih lama belajar bahasa Inggris, secara teoritis kemampuannya dianggap lebih baik. Artikel ini menggunakan metode studi kasus untuk menjawab permasalahan yang diangkat oleh peneliti. Selain itu, metode ini sangat cocok untuk penelitian ini. Metode studi kasus mengkaji suatu kasus atau fenomena tertentu yang ada dalam masyarakat dilakukan secara mendalam untuk mempelajari latar belakang, keadaan, dan interaksi yang terjadi. Berdasarkan data yang telah dikumpulkan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kata instead dan cost adalah kata yang paling salah diucapkan. Salah pengucapan pada kata justru disebabkan oleh kebiasaan pengucapan yang salah yaitu / ɪn'stɪd /, adapun kata cost siswa tidak membacanya lagi. Adapun pertanyaan kedua, tentang apa yang menyebabkan mereka salah melafalkan kata-kata monophthong, hal ini karena mereka malas mempelajari pengucapannya, termasuk monophthong. Temuan ini diperkuat dengan kuesioner yang dijawab oleh tutor mereka menggunakan metode member check untuk memvalidasi temuan

    The Training on Making Game-Based Learning Media with Quizizz Application for Teachers at SDN Banjaragung 1 Mojokerto

    Abstract: The problem faced by teachers in teaching is still using less interesting learning media, such as sending documents, photos or videos containing learning material. This learning media makes students quickly bored. Moreover, students who are still at elementary school level are more interested in things that are game-based or that require students to participate in the process of understanding the material. One solution is to learn while playing or providing material using methods that are very popular with students at the elementary level. According to the results of observations about the problems that occurred at SD Negeri Banjaragung 1 Mojokerto, the researcher took an idea to conduct training in making game-based learning media. The Quizizz Application Helps All Teachers at Banjaragung 1 Mojokerto Elementary School. This is provided to provide guidance and training to teachers at SD Negeri Banjaragung 1 Mojokerto on how to create interesting and game-based learning media with the help of the Quiziiz application which can be operated via laptop or mobile phone. The result of this training activity is that teachers can create fun learning media through the Quizziz application well. Of the 13 participants who took part in this activity, all of them were able to apply the material presented by the service team in using the quizizz application

    The Archeology of Knowledge in Parikan of Kentrung Arts

    The research entitled Archeology of Knowledge in the Parikan of Kentrung Art that focused on the following three things: (1) knowledge of the structure of the Kentrung art shrine; (2) knowledge of the value or meaning content of the Kentrung art shrine; and (3) knowledge of the function of the Kentrung art shrine. The archaeological approach and theory of knowledge are used to view art (especially parikan structures) as a form of expression of cultural values and community concerns in the form of symbols that require interpretation, understanding, and explanation. This research employed both descriptive qualitative research methods and folklore research methods during the data collection phase. We use qualitative research methods to verbally describe the data, while we use folklore research methods to process the oral data found in Parikan of Kentrung Art. Both have three stages, namely data collection, data classification, and data analysis. The results of the data analysis concluded that (1) structure knowledge of the parikan of kentrung art includes: each stanza consists of 4 lines, 2 lines as sampiran, and the next 2 lines as content by empowering sound elements to create aesthetics. (2) knowledge of the content and meaning of the parikan in kentrung art in the form of satirical value for those who are in love or romance, social, economic, cultural, or artistic issues; there is even mystical and religious value. (3) Knowledge related to the function of parikan includes: the function of a means of entertainment; a means of love for local culture; a means of caring for social, environmental, and safety functions

    Cohesive Devices on Abstracts of Sinta-5 Accredited in English Journal: A Discourse Analysis Study

    In academic writing, cohesion is vital in ensuring clarity and facilitating reader comprehension, particularly in concise research abstracts that summarize key findings. This research aims to identify the types of cohesive devices and explain the use of cohesive devices in abstracts. The object of the research was 21 abstract journals. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using qualitative content analysis as proposed by Mayring (2014). The analysis involved categorization, abstraction, and coding of the text. The results showed that there were 1113 exemplary of cohesive devices. In addition to that, collocation was the most frequently used device, appearing in 430 instances, then reiteration in 269 instances, references in 291 instances, suggesting a firm reliance on these for coherence. Conjunctions were also extensively used, with 117 instances, while ellipsis appeared only four instances as nominal ellipsis. The substitution was noted just twice, including both nominal and verbal forms. The research concludes that collocations and reiteration significantly enhance the clarity and flow of academic writing, with conjunctions aiding logical progression. The limited role of substitution and ellipsis highlights their specific, less frequent applications in maintaining textual cohesion and coherence. This analysis underscores the importance of various cohesive devices in effectively conveying research findings and ensuring reader comprehension of academic abstracts

    Cooking Pumpkin Stick Cooking Training for Empowerements of Family Walfare Mothers as an Effort to Improve the Economy in Jatibanjar Village, Ploso District, Jombang Regency

    Cooking skills training is carried out in order to empower the community amid the weakening economy due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia which has not subsided until now, it is hoped that this training will be able to create an independent and empowered community so that it can be a step in tackling the problems of poverty that occur. This training is carried out by means of demonstration (live practice) which is intended so that participants can directly ask questions and discuss related to the material presented. The food product processing skills taught in this training are the type of food, namely Pumpkin Stick. Participants of the cooking skills training are women members of the Jatibanjar Village PKK with an average age of 30-50 years, totaling 35 people and it will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2022 starting at 09.00 - finished, at the Jatibanjar Balaidesa residence. The results obtained from this cooking training are the increased skills of PKK women in Jati Banjar village to process simple foods in increasing the economy in utilizing pumpkin as food that has a selling value

    Percepatan Produksi Karya Sastra Mahasiswa Program Permata Merdeka Dengan Memanfaatan Voice Typing

    This study aims to: (1) describe how to use voice typing by Permata Merdeka students. (2) describe the PPKSM model by using the voice typing of Permata Merdeka students. (3) Describe the form of literary works produced by the students of the Permata Merdeka program by using voice typing.This research method uses a qualitative approach. Qualitative research is a way to interpret and present data in descriptive form. The existing data are then interpreted and analyzed. This research resulted in: (1) how to use voice typing for Permata Merdeka students. (2) PPKSM model by utilizing voice typing of Permata Merdeka Program students. (3) the form of literary works produced by students of the Permata Merdeka program by utilizing voice typing. This innovative applied research TKT is at level six, namely demonstration of a system/subsystem model or prototype in a relevant environment. This study demonstrates the PPKSM (Accelerated Production of Student Literary Works) model by using voice typing to Permata Merdeka students who programmed the Literary Creative Writing course.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mendeskripsikan cara memanfaatkan voice typing mahasiswa Program Permata Merdeka.  (2) mendeskripsikan model PPKSM dengan memanfaatan voice typing mahasiswa Program Permata Merdeka. (3) Mendeskripsikan bentuk karya sastra yang dihasilkan mahasiswa program permata merdeka dengan memanfaatkan voice typing. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif.  Penelitian kualitatif merupakan cara untuk menafsirkan dan menyajikan data dalam bentuk deskriptif. Data-data yang telah ada kemudian ditafsirkan dan dianalisis. Penelitian ini menghasilkan: (1) cara memanfaatkan voice typing mahasiswa Program Permata Merdeka.  (2) model PPKSM dengan memanfaatan voice typing mahasiswa Program Permata Merdeka. (3) bentuk karya sastra yang dihasilkan mahasiswa program permata merdeka dengan memanfaatan voice typing. TKT penelitian terapan inovatif ini berada pada tingkat  enam yaitu demonstrasi model atau prototipe sistem/subsistem dalam suatu lingkungan yang relevan.
