Consuming the jihad : an enquiry into the subculture of internet jihadism

Recent years have seen a great deal of interest in phenomena such as Al Qaida ‘terrorism’, Islamic ‘radicalism’ or, increasingly, ‘jihadism’ - on the Internet. However, as I argue in this thesis, much work in these areas has been problematic for a number of reasons. Much literature has been narrowly focused on the security issues which it pre-judges the content to raise, and has therefore taken some aspects too literally while ignoring others. Conversely, where authors have addressed ‘jihadi’ content or ‘electronic jihad’ as a phenomenon unto itself, they have had difficulty making sense of it within religious studies or political communication frameworks. In this dissertation, I propose an alternative approach. Deliberately eschewing frameworks based on pre-existing conceptions of religion or politics, I draw, instead, on the academic literature on fandom and subcultural media consumption. Using this conceptual lens, I attempt to analyse jihadism on the Internet (which I define in terms of online consumption of, and identification with self-described ‘jihadi’ content) as a subcultural phenomenon on its own terms. I argue that, without necessarily denying the role that beliefs and ideals expressed in ‘jihadi’ content may sometimes have in sustaining the physical violence of the ‘global jihad’, the cultural practices which constitute Internet jihadism have a tactical logic of their own which may not always coincide with the ‘strategic’ interests of ‘global jihad’. By better understanding what ‘ordinary' jihadis, most of whom will never participate in violence, get out of their practices, and how they negotiate the apparent contradictions of their situation, I suggest that we may be better placed to understand not only why some jihadis ‘fail’ to negotiate these contradictions, but also, perhaps, to raise questions about how popular media consumption works more generally

    Jihad Beyond Islam

'Jihad' is a highly charged word. Often mistranslated as 'Holy War', it has become synonymous with terrorism. Current political events have entirely failed to take account of the subtlety and complexity of jihad. Like many concepts with a long history, different cultural ideas have influenced the religious aspects of jihad. As a result its original meaning has been adapted, modified and destabilized - never more than at the present time. How does jihad manifest itself in Muslims' everyday lives? What impact has 9/11 and its backlash had on jihad? By observing the current crisis of identity among ordinary Muslims, this timely book explores why, and in what circumstances Muslims speak of jihad. In the end, jihad is what Muslims say it is. Marranci offers us a nuanced and sophisticated anthropological understanding of Muslims' lives far beyond the predictable cliches.Have a look at the author´s blog hereExplores the different cultural ideas that have influenced the religious aspects of jihad. The various editorials of the texts bring out the various meanings of jihad from various perspectives of the scholars. But apart from that these understandings also become socio-religious problems. The rise of terrorism cases in Indonesia and other countries is associated with mandatory orders for jihad for all Muslims in the world. This has sparked hostility for all religious communities from various backgrounds, including a well-known contemporary scholar, Yusuf al-Qaradawi. so that his work appeared with the title Fiqh Al-Jihad: Dirasah Muqaranah li Ahkamihi wa falsafatihi fi Dlaui Al-Qur'ani wa Al-Sunnah. From the book Fiqh Jihad, the author tries to explore the understanding of hadiths about jihad according to Yusuf al-Qaradawi. In this case, the formulation of the problem is how is Yusuf al-Qaradawi's understanding of the hadith about jihad in the book Fiqh Jihad? And what is the relevance of Yusuf al-Qaradawi's understanding of the phenomenon of jihad that occurs in Indonesia? This research is a type of library research by looking for literature studies related to Yusuf al-Qaradawi and his essays, especially those that discuss his views on jihad in the book Fiqh Jihad and his understanding of hadith. Yusuf al-Qaradawi's understanding of hadith jihad uses thematic methods, namely collecting hadith quotations and safely verifying them from reliable sources. The approach used by Yusuf al-Qaradawi in understanding the hadith is the hermeneutic approach. Preaching using today's technology such as social media is an effort to spread Islamic teachings, and also to defend the country's economy, including today's jihad, according to Yusuf al-Qaradawi's meaning of jihad

    Jihad – Islamic Holy War

Celem artykułu jest próba wyjaśnienia kontrowersji i nieporozumień narosłych wokół muzułmańskiej koncepcji świętej wojny – dżihadu. Idea dżihadu została ukazana w kontekście innych obowiązków nałożonych na muzułmanów. Autor dokonuje historycznego przeglądu wybranych stanowisk i analizy leksykalnej badanego zagadnienia. The aim of the article is to clear the controversies and misunderstandings behind the concept of the Muslim holy war – Jihad. The article presents Jihad in relation to other obligations that are imposed on Muslims. Next, the author offers a historical overview of selected opinions and a lexical analysis of the idea. In his analysis of two particular points of view: Jihad as an aggressive war against non-Muslims, on the one hand, and the struggle that Allah’s followers wage against their own weaknesses in order to become better Muslims, on the other hand, the author tries to prove the methodological legitimacy of both approaches. Still, he believes that many contemporary Muslims do not refer to Jihad meaning the spiritual or pacifistic struggle, but aggressive and military activities. Both sociologically and historically, based on the teachings of Qur’an Jihad unequivocally means Muslim warfare in the name of God in order to protect or promote Islam as it was understood by great Muslim jurists. In conclusion, the author proves that Jihad was perceived as a holy war against the non-believers, as the consequent Jihadism, are the most dangerous challenges that the modern world has to face. The aim of the Jihadist war is not to force all Non-Muslims to convert to Islam, but to introduce Shariat law all over the world. Therefore, Jihad is a global issue that concerns not only the Western world. The author believes that Jihadism is a new direction in the Islamist political belief that was first expressed by Hassan al-Bana and Sayyid Qutba in their protest against the West. Its aim was to establish a global Islamist rule using any means available. Jihadists believe that the Islamist rule, peace and general prosperity can only be achieved by means of Jihad – the holy war against non-believers. The author proves that although Jihadists consider the West to be their enemy, their ultimate goal, after they defeat dhimmis in the West, is to crack down on the idolaters in the East

This article aims to explore the meaning of jihad in the perspective of contextual interpretation. In this study, the Mawdlū‘ī (thematic) Tafsir method used to catch a big picture or spirit of text, with the tool as a analysis tool in the form of two approaches, namely: Historical (Historical) and Hermeneutic Approaches. From the results of the study,  get conclusion that jihad, which has often been reduced by some people as a war against different beliefs (the others), turns out to have a far more substantial meaning and is relevant to the present context. The meaning of the author is that jihad strives to uphold human values, oppose tyranny, uphold justice. In this case, jihad is broadly interpreted not merely as a war against the enemy, but to fight against injustice, tyranny, social pathoologies such as poverty, ignorance, and most importantly, jihad against oneself
