Negotiating emotional order: a grounded theory of the survivorship process in women who have completed treatment for breast cancer

    No full text
Rationale for the study: Decades of research focusing on treatment and detection of breast cancer has promoted better outcomes in treating the disease and longer survival rates. Despite this there is a significant gap in the literatures regarding the survivorship process. Breast cancer survivorship needs to be fully understood by nurses and health care providers (HCP) in order to obtain optimal health outcomes for this ever growing population. Method: Classic grounded theory was used in this study to explore the process of transitional survivorship from the prospective of women who had completed initial treatment for breast cancer. Approval by the Institutional Board of Research at Rutgers University and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare was obtained prior to the commencement of the research. Twelve women were interviewed. All of the women who were interviewed had completed initial treatment for breast cancer, two of the women had recurrence since the initial completion of treatment for breast cancer and one participant had metastatic breast cancer. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysis by constant comparison as described by Glaser was employed. Results: In this study, the basic social process describing how women with breast cancer perceive their illness and take action was negotiating emotional order. Participants were attempting to bring the psychological aspect of having breast cancer into a state of order by negotiating control with cancer, themselves and external factors. From the data a five stages latent process of negotiating emotional order consists of: 1) Losing Life Order, 2) Assisted Life Order, 3) Assuming Life Order 4) Accepting the Things Cannot Control, and 5) Creating Emotional Order. This latent process also had a cyclical property as evidenced by the data collected from participants that had experienced cancer more than once or had a time period where they were being tested for cancer recurrence. Conclusion: This research method provided this population of concern with a voice to assist nurses explore the dynamic challenge women experience once they have completed breast cancer treatment and enter extended survivorship. This study contributed to the literature in several ways and the findings may help healthcare providers who care for breast cancer survivors understand the depth and perpetual emotional impact that breast cancer survivors endure. This study will potentially serve as path for future research and aid in the understanding of the psychological impact that breast cancer has upon survivors.Ph. Author´s name: Bc. Stanislav Klimek School: Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Energy institute Title: Determining the life storage of a carbon steel cask Consultant: Prof. Ing. Oldřich Matal, CSc. Number of pages: 70 Year: 2009 The assignment of this diploma thesis is to estimate the lifetime of spent fuel container made from carbon steel grade. This container is designed for deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Basic mechanism of corrosion are described in detail in the first part. Further on, this work deals with the other specific phenomena and influences, which affect at corrosion of steel in conditions of a deep geological repository. Heat, radiation and surroundings are considered of particular importance. In the following part an estimate of the lifetime of model container is introduced, which is affected by temperature and radiation. Here recommendations for protection of container are introduced, arising from the model calculation. Finally, the relevancy of incidence of particular parameters is evaluated, which affect the corrosion

Sender – Recipient – Dialogue. The Conversational Nature of Polemical Texts

    No full text
This paper discusses communicative strategies as employed by three 17th-century authors in the following texts: Lithos by Piotr Mohyla, Rozmowa białocerkiewna [A dialogue in Biała Cerkiew] and Messiasz prawdziwy [The Messiah] both by Joannicius Galatowski. The analysis of the relationships obtaining between the interlocutors, ways of evaluating their adversaries and their lines of argument makes the author of the paper postulate a relationship between the degree of emotionality of the text and the communicative distance between the interlocutors. The larger the distance, the larger the number of explicit negative judgments and more openly expressed emotionality. The author of the message is inscribed in the text, even though he is not an initiator of the debate. The author is always a more powerful partner, endowed with social and moral authority, and the ultimate receiver – the reader is expected to take his view.Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła IIAbramowska T., 2002, Dialog, [w:] Słownik literatury staropolskiej, red. In many cases, a proper diet and increased physical activity are effective in the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, which usually prevents the development of the disease. However, the recommendations for physical activity in type 2 diabetics differ from those for healthy people. The paper presents an analysis of recommendations concerning physical activity in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Key words: diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, physical activit

Development of Riverside Areas in the Context of the Attractiveness for Residents

    No full text
The aim of this article is to analyze the tourism potential in the riverside areas of selected cities in Lubuskie Voivodeship located in the Oder River valleys. The research issue of the article was defined as a way to measure tourist potential in the development of riverside areas. In the research phase, based on the comparative multi-criteria method, special attention was paid to the accessibility of the river for the inhabitants, their usefulness for the recreation, as well as the location of the recreational infrastructures in the river valleys. The presence of infrastructure using the river's potential is marginal in the shoreline zone of the cities under analysis. Despite the rapid growth of tourist activities its river potential is still being marginalised. The research problem was to determine the tourist potential of selected cities and to identify the cities with the greatest potential, in which the advisability of investment seems to be the most relevant and necessary. The result of considerations carried out using the multi-criteria analysis method is the selection of the city with the greatest tourism potential. Among the surveyed cities, Nowa Sól has the greatest tourist potential

Recommendations by German allergy and ORL societies AeDA and DGHNO for dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab

Summary Background Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), an inflammatory disease of the paranasal mucosa, is primarily characterized by type 2 inflammation. Three antibodies (dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab) are now approved for the treatment of severe CRSwNP. Documentation of disease severity during the course of treatment is essential. Methods A literature search of Medline, PubMed, and the national and international trial and guideline register, and the Cochrane Library was performed to analyze the immunology of CRSwNP and determine the evidence for the effect of dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab in this disease. This has resulted in 3 position papers prepared by our group of authors, which form the basis of this summarizing review. Results Based on the information from the international literature, recommendations for the use of dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab in CRSwNP in the German health care system are given by an expert panel. Conclusion Dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab are approved for patients 18 years of age and older with CRSwNP as add-on therapy to intranasal corticosteroids when, for dupilumab and mepolizumab, therapy with systemic corticosteroids and/or surgery does not achieve sufficient disease control. Therapy with omalizumab is indicated when therapy with intranasal corticosteroids does not result in sufficient disease control. Dedicated recommendations for the documentation of the use in the German health care system are given, which are based on the position papers of our author group already published on this topic

Prophet as the Sentinel of life. An attempt to discover the symbolismof Humanae Vitae 4, 18, 31

The article tries to find the symbolism of Pope Paul VI – the author of Humanae Vitae, pointing out that he can be attributed to the features found in the biblical image of the prophet protecting life. In the first part, various Old Testament words related to sentinel were analyzed, indicating that the most accurate is to use the root cph as a symbolic image of the pope as a watchman. Then consideration was given to life as a protected subject
