Chihiro Boards a Train: Perceptual Modulation in the Films of Studio Ghibli
This paper examines the ability of Studio Ghibli animated films to perceptually modulate their audiences. Working from Hayao Miyazaki’s suggestion that if a filmmaker wants to stay true to empathy they need only quieten things down, this paper seeks a technical explanation for this process. It will examine how the interplay of simple character designs and the sliding sensation of the animation stand induce a certain cognitive state. Through this process, the onlooker is more likely to imbue a two-dimensional character with a multidimensional, metaphysical presence
Truth, purification and power: Foucault's genealogy of purity and impurity in and after The Will to Know lectures
Foucault’s 1970–71 lectures at the Collège de France, The Will to Know, highlight the significance of themes of purity and impurity in Western thought. Reflecting on these themes coincided with the emergence of Foucault’s theory of power. This article presents the first analysis of Foucault’s investigation of purity and impurity in The Will to Know lectures, identifying the distinctive theory Foucault offers of purity as a discursive apparatus addressing correspondence between the subject and the truth through the image of relative integrity or mixture. It then traces Foucault’s subsequent reflections on these themes in his later writings on disciplinary power. The implications of Foucault’s position are considered; the article will close by putting Foucault’s ideas in dialogue with those of Kristeva, and in considering the role that purity and impurity may play in resistance
Marcas da cultura local em tradução do conto "No baile acadiano", de Kate Chopin
A autora norte-americana Kate Chopin (1850-1904) é conhecida por sua vasta produção de contos ambientados no estado de Louisiana, os quais exibem uma representação das peculiaridades locais. Em vários dos contos, Chopin focaliza a cultura Cajun e propõe uma representação ficcional da língua daquela comunidade (língua crioula Cajun) através da fala dos personagens, como ocorre em "No baile acadiano". Dividida em três capítulos, a presente dissertação almeja investigar se a questão da regionalidade, representada por marcas da cultura local e de identidade cultural dos personagens, influencia na permanência de expressões em língua francesa e língua Cajun no processo tradutório do conto At the ‘Cadian Ball para a língua portuguesa: "No baile acadiano". A pesquisa permitiu constatar que houve influência das questões culturais e de regionalidades na tradução do conto, uma vez que o uso da língua transmite informação social, aspecto exemplificado durante a alternância de códigos entre os personagens dependendo do interlocutor. Logo, verifica-se que a atitude da tradutora Denise Mariné pode ser considerada como respeitosa à autora e aos aspectos linguísticos que seriam prejudicados caso tais frases e/ou expressões/unidades fraseológicas fossem traduzidas para a língua portuguesa.American author Kate Chopin (1850-1904) is known for writing many short stories located in the state of Louisiana, which display a representation of local particularities. In several of her stories, Chopin focuses on Cajun culture and proposes a fictional representation of the language of that community (Cajun language) through the speech of the characters, as in "No baile Acadiano". Divided into three chapters, this dissertation aims to investigate whether the issue of regionality, represented by marks of local culture and cultural identity of the characters, influences in the maintenance of expressions in French and Cajun language in the translation process of the short story "At the 'Cadian Ball" into Portuguese: "No baile Acadiano". The research showed that there was influence of cultural issues and regionalities on the translation of the story because the use of language conveys social information, aspect that was exemplified during the code-switching process among characters, depending on the interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese
Direct speech, subjectivity and speaker positioning in London English and Paris French
This paper examines functional similarities and differences in the use of pragmatic features – in particular quotatives and general extenders – on the right and left periphery of direct quotations. This comparative study, based on the analysis of a contemporary corpus of London English and Paris French (MLE – MPF) , finds that the form and frequency of these particles tend to vary not only with respect to social factors such as speakers’ age and gender, but also with respect to the different pragmatic functions they come to perform in different interactional settings. The contemporary data is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively to show how different variants position the speaker in relation to: i) the content of the quote, ii) the interlocutors, iii) the presumed author of the quote. The paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of pragmatic universals and variability in the use of direct speech
Literatura infantil como narrativa transmédia: O universo da super-heroína Mary Kate como narrativa transmédia
O projeto tem por objetivo, educar crianças de 5 e 6 anos sobre segurança, através de uma narrativa transmédia. Perante o crescente uso de dispositivos digitais e a perda de relevância da leitura tradicional entre as crianças, este projeto busca promover o desenvolvimento infantil saudável, incentivando a imaginação, a socialização e a atividade física.
Ao longo da narrativa, as crianças completam diversas tarefas, que incluem brincar com uma casa de cartão, interagir com personagens de madeira, preencher uma lista de verificação e finalizar exercícios do livro. O objetivo consiste em ajudar a super-heroína Mary Kate a capturar os três vilões – Fogo, Eletricidade e a Água e, ao mesmo tempo, aprender sobre segurança. Após completarem as atividades, as crianças são recompensadas com uma moeda de ""Inspetor de Segurança Nível 1"", uma t-shirt e um certificado.
Além do livro, o projeto utiliza media secundários, como um canal YouTube com coreografias de dança das personagens e o merchandising, nomeadamente roupas e jogos para crianças. O projeto oferece uma abordagem transmédia, com o objetivo de educar, e interagir com as crianças utilizando diferentes média.
Deste modo, a autora espera não só entreter, mas também educar as crianças sobre segurança, promovendo uma consciencialização que poderá contribuir para a redução dos acidentes infantis. Serve ainda como modelo para futuras iniciativas educacionais como narrativas transmédia que promovam a saúde e segurança das crianças.
A importância deste projeto é particularmente relevante no contexto da União Europeia e Portugal, onde os acidentes são uma das principais causas de mortalidade infantil, resultando em milhares de mortes e internamentos anuais.The project aims to educate 5 and 6-year-old children about safety through a transmedia narrative. Given the increasing use of digital devices and the declining relevance of traditional reading among children, this project seeks to promote healthy childhood development by encouraging imagination, socialization and physical activity.
Throughout the narrative, they complete various tasks, including playing with a cardboard house, interacting with wooden characters, filling out a checklist and completing book exercises. The goal is to help superheroine Mary Kate capture three villains – Fire, Electricity and Water, while simultaneously learning about safety. Upon completing the activities, children are rewarded with a "Level 1 Safety Inspetor" coin, a t-shirt and a certificate.
In addition to the book, the project utilizes secondary media, such as a YouTube channel with characters' dance choreographies and merchandise, including children's clothing and games. The project offers a transmedia approach aimed at educating and engaging with children through different media.
Thus, the author hopes not only to entertain but also to educate children about safety, fostering awareness that could contribute to reducing childhood accidents. It also serves as a model for future educational initiatives that use transmedia narratives to promote children's health and safety.
The importance of this project is particularly relevant in the context of the European Union and Portugal, where accidents are one of the leading causes of child mortality, resulting in thousands of deaths and hospitalizations annually
SELF-LIBERATION IN JODI PICOULT’S MY SISTER’S KEEPER
The research is self-liberation in Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper. The novel represents people especially teenagers who want to liberate themselves from parents’ power, unfair treatment, fear and feeling guilty, to get medial emancipation and through sisterhood. This is a library research and applies mimetic theory proposed by Abrams saying that literature is an imitation of the real world. Liberation from parents' power is represented by Anna when she liberates herself by suing her mother because of making her as a donor to save her sister. Liberation from parents’ unfair treatment is represented by Anna and Jesse. Anna feels that she is treated unfairly by her mother because her mother has born Anna just for Kate needs a donor, and Jesse feels that he is treated unfairly because he does not get his parents’ attention. Liberation from fear and feeling guilty is represented by Sara and Campbell. Sara who is initially afraid of losing her daughter, Kate, is finally able to accept the reality and also feels guilty when Anna died because she had made Anna as a donor for Kate. Campbell liberates himself from his fear and over-thinking, he realizes that he has been wrong for hiding his epilepsy from the people around him, especially Julia. Liberation to get medical emancipation is represented by Anna and Kate. Anna wants to liberate herself to get medical emancipation so she can survive without having to donate anything to Kate. Kate wants to liberate herself to get her medical emancipation through Anna to refuse any kind of medical treatments because of giving up living. Liberation through sisterhood is represented by Anna who liberates herself because her sister, Kate forbids her to donate her kidney so Kate can go peacefully and Anna can live a normal life without having to worry about Kate anymore. In conclusion, the author, Jodi Picoult in her novel My Sister’s Keeper vividly portrays the condition of people who have right to possess their bodies even though they have to take legal action to sue families to get mutual understanding and advantages

Chaos, loss, passage and desire. The experience of diaspora in the works of Edwidge Danticat, Jamaica Kincaid, Andrea Levy and Dionne Brand
This thesis brings together the visions of four women writers of West Indian descent (Edwidge Danticat, Jamaica Kincaid, Andrea Levy and Dionne Brand) and interprets their works through the most established theories of diaspora and postcolonial studies in the attempt to illustrate the composite nature of the experience of Caribbean diaspora. It lies on the premise that such a complex phenomenon must be interpreted as both an historical event, a private happening and a socio-cultural revolution, and leads to the conclusion that one single voice cannot be enough to represent its comprehensive identity. Multivocality thus becomes a necessity and the idea of assembling the images produced by a group of authors rather, than concentrating on one particular imagery, serves to foster a bird’s eye vision able to render the kaleidoscopic character of this experience. Each chapter turns around one of these writers, whose work is interpreted according to one dominant image. Resorting to a strategy based on the collection of apparently disparate images, this thesis reinforces the idea that the complexity of the Caribbean experience of diaspora cannot be interpreted univocally and that loss, desire, chaos and transition are the leading forces of this phenomenon
A condição feminina no matrimônio, delineada pela ficção
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2009A presente tese baseia-se na leitura temática de seis romances, sendo três deles ambientados no séc. XIX (Madame Bovary, de Flaubert, L#Adultera e Effi Briest, de Theodor Fontane) e três no séc. XX (São Bernardo, de Graciliano Ramos, Um casamento sem amor [A proper marriage] e O verão antes da queda [Summer before the dark], de Doris Lessing). A proposta de leitura busca descerrar o universo feminino e as relações entre os gêneros na vida conjugal, delineados pela ficção. O primeiro capítulo apresenta as narrativas do séc. XIX, em que a questão do casamento encontra-se fortemente ligada ao problema do adultério. A leitura desses romances aqui levada a efeito encontra-se permeada de modo mais intenso de questões tais como educação e sociedade. O segundo capítulo, a seu turno, apresenta as narrativas do séc. XX, trazendo à discussão os aspectos feministas e as questões de gênero presentes nas obras. Os romances que compõem a leitura, excetuando-se L#Adultera, representam o matrimônio como polo de conflitos e desilusões derivados, em parte, da condição de opressão da mulher em uma sociedade de orientação androcêntrica
