The reactions of electron-rich monomers with electrophilic compounds: Methyl tricyanoethylenecarboxylate and trimethylsilyl esters.
The experimental results of the current work has three parts. First, the cycloaddition and copolymerization of methyl tricyanoethylenecarboxylate 2 with electron-rich olefins, such as p-methoxystyene, trans-anethole, isobutyl vinyl ether and ethyl cis-propenyl ether are discussed. The nature of the cycloadduct is determined by the orientation of the electrophilic olefins. Copolymerization of 2 with p-methoxystyrene under free-radical initiation gave an alternating copolymer. Second, trimethylsilyl methanesulfonate and trimethylsilyl diphenylphosphate were used as initiators for cationic polymerization. In the presence or absence of hindered pyridine, trimethylsilyl diphenylphosphate and trimethylsilyl methanesulfonate did not initiate the polymerization of p-methoxystyrene, anethole, 4-isopropenylanisole, 1,3-dioxolane or trioxane. Only trimethylsilyl methanesulfonate was able to initiate the cationic polymerization of 1,3-dioxepane in the presence of a hindered base. A model study demonstrates fast desilylation of a carbocation β to a silicon by an oxygen-containing counterion. Finally, block copolydioxepane-polydimethylsiloxane has been synthesized by the "silyl sulfonate approach." In this approach, the nucleophilic macromer, lithium polydimethylsiloxanate, was reacted with chlorodimethylsilane or allylchlorodimethylsilane to produce the corresponding macromers with silylated end groups. They contained a labile substituent, an allyl or a proton, on silicon. These macromers were then converted to electrophilic macropolydimethylsiloxane arylsulfonate by reaction with an aryl or alkyl sulfonic acid. The sulfonate polydisiloxanes can initiate the cationic polymerization of 1,3-dioxepane to yield block polydimethylsiloxane-polydioxepane. This cationic polymerization did proceed in the presence of 2,6-di-t-butylpyridine, which would trap any acid impurities.The experimental results of the current work has three parts. Finding fun in non-formal technology education
Abstract
In this exploratory study into the world of 8–17-year-old children’s non-formal technology education, two different types of technology education with varying levels of non-formality were investigated to see how participants find fun in these situations as it is apparent that if something is non-mandatory to attend to, there should be some type of enjoyment found in the process. The results of the analysis suggest that there are three main ways children and teenagers have fun in non-formal education: fun from the tasks they are doing, social fun by sharing with other attendants, and pedagogical fun that has been embedded in the learning process. Based on our findings, we offer suggestions for how to add elements of fun in the non-formal technology education, to make it more motivating and enjoyable to the participants
The metric tun : standardisation, quantification and industrialisation in the British brewing industry, 1760-1830
This thesis considers the British beer-brewing industry around 1800 as a case study exploring current themes in the history of science and technology: the imposition of
reliable standards, the use of instruments and quantities, and the nature of industrial growth. I begin by addressing Michael Combrune, author of the first thermometric
brewing account, showing the influence of Boerhaavian fermentation theory and the eighteenth-century agenda for "commercial chemistry" on his work: Combrune's
fellow brewers, however, did not generally rely on the chemical scheme of management he had established, developing instead highly localised thermometric
operations which did not challenge established understandings. Next, I consider the determination of beer strength, focusing here on the brewer John Richardson's
innovation of the saccharometer, a gravimetric philosophical instrument. I show how Richardson presented both the device and the quantity in which it was scaled, later termed the `brewer's pound, ' as offering brewery-specific advantages, in order to ensure its acceptance whilst at the same time denying its roots in the disputatious field of spirits hydrometry. Richardson did not achieve his wider goal of monopolist control over the device, but his project of saccharometric determination was widely taken up, contributing to a significant change in the composition of beer, as brewers moved from using traditional brown- malts to the saccharometrically preferable pales. This development is then reviewed in the context of an analysis of the identity of London porter, the staple brown beer of London: I investigate the relationship of porter's identity to the uniquely vast and industrialised plants which produced it. Finally, I highlight the ambiguous nature of appeals to `science' or `chemistry' before 1830 by discussing the widespread contemporary panic over adulteration, popularly assumed to
be practised by those who associated with chemists and did not pursue a `traditional' approach to brewing. This controversy was settled, I contend, only with the later
development of a common laboratory-analytical context between brewers, pharmacists and public analysts who were able to redefine the concept of adulteration itself

News media has been played an important role to expose a leader and political parties.
The relationship between media and leaders with political parties in a nation comes up as a
hill and its mount. They both depends each other to get, deliver, distribute, and spread its
news. A media such as newspaper needs a leader and members of political parties to interact
with them in whole aspects, included politics, economics, social and cultures. This
assessment tries to observe newspapers in providing news report of Najib Tun Razak, who
has been incoming Prime Minister and political parties in Malaysia. The main reason,
newspapers which deliver in Malay language, English, Chinese, and Indian, has been
collected for this assessment. Others are Berita Harian, Utusan Malaysia, The Star, The New
Straits Times, Nanyang Siang Pau, China Press, Malaysia Nanban, and Tamil Nesan. The
assessment only represents the moment in time of Vote of UMNO ( March 23 – 29, 2009) and
before Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had been inaugurated and vowed as Prime Minister on
April 4, 2009. The collected columns are political ones. This assessment will be recognized as
diversities of printing news media reports in some languages about incoming 6th Malaysian
Prime Minister. The result of this assessment finds out Chinese newspapers deliver balanced
report towards leaders and political parties
Malaysia’s relations with Saudi Arabia under Tun Dr. Mahathir era, 1981-2003
Malaysia’s early formal relation with Saudi Arabia begun since the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj era (the first Malaysian Premier, 1957-1970) until present. During the reign of Tun Dr. Mahathir, the fourth Malaysian Premier, the relation has changed dynamically. Several initiatives have been taken by the Tun Dr. Mahathir regime to shift the pattern of relations from one to two way communication. Apart from successfully securing economic opportunities from the kingdom, this study attempts to relate the significance of the relations to the Tun Dr. Mahathir regime with its efforts to portray religious commitment, both at domestic and international level. The promotion of Islam by Malaysian leaders, both at home, and at the international level, is vital for the continuation of their political survival. Equipped with more liberal-pragmatic Islamic approach has, to some extent, prolonged the survival of the Tun Dr. Mahathir’s political regime interests
