Developing elite Neurospora crassa strains for cellulosic ethanol production using fungal breeding

    No full text
The demand for renewable and sustainable energy has generated considerable interest in the conversion of cellulosic biomass into liquid fuels such as ethanol using a filamentous fungus. While attempts have been made to study cellulose metabolism through the use of knockout mutants, there have been no systematic effort to characterize natural variation for cellulose metabolism in ecotypes adapted to different habitats. Here, we characterized natural variation in saccharification of cellulose and fermentation in 73 ecotypes and 89 laboratory strains of the model fungus Neurospora crassa. We observed significant variation in both traits among natural and laboratory generated populations, with some elite strains performing better than the reference strain. In the F1 population N345, 15% of the population outperformed both parents with the top performing strain having 10% improvement in ethanol production. These results suggest that natural alleles can be exploited through fungal breeding for developing elite industrial strains for bioethanol production.Peer reviewe

    Lizzo “Truth Hurts” Co-Author Allegations

    No full text
Famous recording artist, Lizzo, filed a preemptive lawsuit on October 23rd, 2019 to disprove allegations that Justin and Jeramiah Raisen and Justin “Yves” Rothman deserve author credit for her song, “Truth Hurts.”Lizzo is seeking a declaratory judgment that the alleged authors have no interest in the copyright or right to share profits. The Raisens and Rothman claim that the lyric “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that bitch”, which originated from a popular internet meme, was a part of an unreleased demo, which Lizzo recorded at the Raisen’s studio, and on the final track. Lizzo claims that Rothman believes that she will pay him to stop making accusations against her, simply because he was present at a writing session for the demo track. Justin Kaplan, 13th Annual ODU Literary Festival

Justin Kaplan once said, I\u27m drawn to people whose lives have a certain mystery--mysteries that aren\u27t going to be solved, that are too sacred to be solved . As an award-winning biographer, Kaplan has been drawn to some of the great, mysterious literary figures of our time, in particular Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. In 1967 he won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain, a biography in which he said he attempted not only to explore the mystery of this man but also to respect it...Two currents flowed through his life. One flowed away from Hannibal, Missouri, toward a world of wealth, fame and materialities. The other flowed back to Hannibal again. Out of the opposition of these currents, out of the turbulent dark waters, came one of the great styles and dazzling personalities of our literature. Clearly, Kaplan, has written the definitive life story of one of America\u27s legendary figures. In 1981 he wrote the biography of another American legend and received the American Book Award for Walt Whitman: A Life. Kaplan\u27s biographies have been praised for their narrative skill and historical breadth, for having the power and hypnotic effect of good novels. His books are artful, sentence by sentence, unraveling legends and leaving a fascinating truth in their place. He has also written a biography of Lincoln Steffens and has been editor of half a dozen other works. For the past two years he has been working as editor of the 16th edition of Bartlett\u27s Familiar Quotations

Justin Martyr et le dialogue interreligieux contemporain

    No full text
This article examines the credibility and relevance of the role Justin Martyr is accredited with in the contemporary interreligious dialogue. In fact, the concept of Logos spermatikos he introduced into the Christian theology is acknowledged since Vatican II as the justification of the openness towards the non-Christian religions. While examining the dialogue practiced by Justin himself, the author of this article reaches the conclusion that the open mindedness of Christians involved in the contemporary interreligious dialogue goes beyond the one of Justin
