Reduction of the Hawaiian genus Platydesma into Melicope section Pelea (Rutaceae) and notes on the monophyly of the section

No full text
Platydesma, an endemic genus to the Hawaiian Islands containing four species, has long been considered of obscure origin. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have unequivocally placed Platydesma within the widespread genus Melicope as sister to the rest of the Hawaiian species of Melicope. This makes submerging Platydesma into Melicope necessary. We make the necessary new combinations: Melicope cornuta (Hillebr.) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner, M. cornuta var. decurrens (B.C.Stone) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner, M. remyi (Sherff) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner, and M. rostrata (Hillebr.) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner. An additional species that has been recognized within Platydesma should now be recognized under its original name M. spathulata A. Gray. All Hawaiian species belong to Melicope section Pelea. Our molecular phylogenetic studies also showed that in addition to merging Platydesma into section Pelea, five species described from New Caledonia need to be excluded from the section in order to achieve monophyly of section Pelea

M. K. Čiurlionis and R. Wagner - two semantic codes of M. Urbaitis' minimalism

Straipsnyje pasirenkamas vienas svarbiausių lietuviškojo minimalizmo, kurio atstovas yra M. Urbaitis, retroversinis rakursas, orientuotas j didžiausių žmonijos genijų šedevrus, jų muzikos atkūrimą ir konkrečiai j Lietuvai itin reikšmingą M. K. Čiurlionio kūrybos recepciją. Du M. Urbaičio kūriniai „Der Fall Wagner" ir „Ramybe" pagal M. K. Čiurlionj yra tarsi du pagrindiniai traukos centrai jo muzikoje. Tokį populiarumą sąlygojo daugelis priežasčių, svarbiausia - atkuriamos muzikos ir jos autorių XX a. neblėstantis aktualumas. Tačiau ši kūryba nėra speciali muzikologijos tyrimų sritis, ji daugiau priskiriama antrinei, nelabai reikšmingai, kitų idėjas plėtojančiai kūrybai. Apie tai daugiausia rašė A. Žiūraitytė, R. Stanevičiūtė, G. Daunoravičienė, R. Gaidamavičiūtė, R. Zubovas. Beieškant platesnės medžiagos atrasta reikšmingų filosofų pasisakymų, ypač Vydūno minčių apie Čiurlionio meną kaip tautos gyvybę ir vokiečių tragediją siekiant suvienyti pasaulį jėga. Tai pastūmėjo mitologijos archetipinių tautos pradų išgryninimo refleksiją ir paaiškina baltiškojo, lietuviškojo minimalizmo šaltinių neišsemiamumą bei konkrečiai M. Urbaičio kūrybos rekreacinę prigimtį ieškant vertybių. Straipsnyje bandoma atsakyti į keletą aktualių šiuolaikinės muzikos klausimų apie modernizmo minimalistinės krypties skilimą, ribotumą, polinkį į rerroversiją, specifinį, tačiau ypač perspektyvų santykį su kitomis dvasingumo sferomis. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Richard Wagner; Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis; Mindaugas Urbaitis; Tristaniškas akordas; Minimalizmas; Richard Wagner; Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis; Mindaugas Urbaitis; Tristan chord; MinimalismMinimalism has played a very important role in Lithuanian nuisic. It absorbed the features of folklore and myth and became a national style. One of its originators, the composer Mindaugas Urbaitis (b. 1952) distinguished for intellectual musical insights, created minimalism retroversion to Western music geniuses: J, S. Bach, W. Л. Mozarr, L. van Beethoven, R Schubert, R Chopin, and Л. Bruckner. Romanticism was particularly widespread among minimalists, the authors of the new simplicity. It seems that M . K. Čiurlionis was the most popular figure as a large part of compositions of Lithuanian authors, being "under the sign of Čiurlionis" (R. Zubovas) is related to him. However, M . Urbaitis' entering minimalism may be considered as a special bringing of the titans shadow, whose influence is still alive in the world, to the Baltic landscape. For his piece of music M . Urbaitis takes the title of F. Nietzsche's book "Der Fall Wagner" ("The Wagner Case", 1888, Turin) in which the philosopher unburdens his heart by demonstrating his adoration and criticism with respect to Wagner. Meanwhile Urbaitis dissociates himself from.this and purifies Wagner (even the composition of the performers is minimal: flute, violin and viola), concentrates on spirituality and transcendence of his music and by using the Tristan and Lohengrin leitmotifs as well as the minimalism method (highlighting and repetition of details, openness of form, "sound of silence") leads them to eternity and light. Another composition by M . Urbaitis, dedicated to M . K. Čiurlionis, is "Ramybė" ("Stilness", 2000). Here Urbaitis uses the motifs from Čiurlionis' Nocturne (VL 183) cis-moll and Prelude (VL 239) d-moll which are especially romantic with the figurative impulses of "waves", giving vitality to the static lucid and harmonious state of stillness

This dissertation presents the construction of a participative methodology in the thematic construction of Environmental School Atlas. It is about a work of research-action carried through with a teacher and a group of students from the #Escola de Educação Básica Silva Jardim# in the city of Alfredo Wagner. The interdisciplinary practice and the systemic approach had been used as a referential for the development of the participative methodology. The used procedures were meetings, the field works for the information collection and photographic register, interviews and visits to the public agencies. The participative methodology, either with the participant groups or with other collaborating volunteers in the research, revealed adequate to the thematic elaboration of the Atlas, indicating to this the observation and the meanings of the people who, at the same time, have the experience of the city reality. The participants felt valued of participating in the group, having place and voice, criticizing and making suggestions. The group interest in the work, the meetings and the field works had been made in the construction of the context of the subjects, pointing the positive aspects that visualize in the city and the problematic situations that deserve to be approached. The field works evidenced that after the experience of (re) knowing the city, the meaning and the importance of the places for the participants are reaffirmed, that is, strengthen the identity of the people with the #place#. The Atlas looks for to synthesize, in a singular way, the result of participative process that showed in an ample way in the participant expressions. In this way, it is intended that the crystallized participative methodology in the participative process, reflects in the Atlas thematic clipping, the city reality and history

Conflict & Compassie: een hedendaagse blik op Wagner en een wagneriaanse blik op onszelf.

No full text
(text in Dutch) Mediated by the so-called Dream-organ ('Traumorgan') which opera composer Richard Wagner mentions in his writings, the author engages in a fictitious dialogue with Wagner. Their dialogue focuses on a few topics related to the conference theme 'Conflict and compassion' that were of concern to Wagner in his days and which have undergone some serious changes since his death. The author discusses with Wagner the 'death of tragedy', sexuality and desire after the sexual revolution, the attractivity of musical genres like film and dance music, and the role of travel
