Perelman's entropy functional at type I singularities of the Ricci flow

    No full text
We study blow-ups around fixed points at Type I singularities of the Ricci flow on closed manifolds using Perelman's W-functional. First, we give an alternative proof of the result obtained by Naber (2010) and Enders-Müller-Topping (2011) that blow-up limits are non-flat gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Our second and main result relates a limit W-density at a Type I singular point to the entropy of the limit gradient shrinking soliton obtained by blowing-up at this point. In particular, we show that no entropy is lost at infinity during the blow-up process. We study blow--ups around fixed points at Type I singularities of the Ricci flow on closed manifolds using Perelman's W-functional. reservedDie vorliegende Arbeit bietet einen Übersetzungsvorschlag vom Deutschen ins Italienische des Buchs Der Beamte sagte der rumäniendeutschen Schriftstellerin Herta Müller. The following is a translation draft from German into Italian of the book Der Beamte sagte by the Romanian-German author Herta Müller. The main aim of this work is to highlight some problems of translation and focus on any possible solutions. Particularly, translation choices of certain stylistic elements characterizing the book of Müller, such as metaphors, are shown. The translation of the text and its commentary thus reveal the complexity of Müller’s highly poetic language and the challenges for the translator

Cinematic metaphor in perspective: reflections on a transdisciplinary framework Cinepoetics ;, v. 5./ edited by Sarah Greifenstein, Dorothea Horst, Thomas Scherer, Christina Schmitt, Hermann Kappelhoff, and Cornelia Müller.

Includes bibliographical references and indexes.Over centuries, scholars have explored how metaphor contributes to thought, language, culture. This collection of essays reflects on Müller, Kappelhoff, and colleagues' transdisciplinary (film studies and linguistics) approach formulated in "Cinematic Metaphor: Experience - Affectivity - Temporality". The key concept of cinematic metaphor opens up reflections on metaphor as a form of embodied meaning-making in human life across disciplines. The book documents collaborative work, reflecting intense, sometimes controversial, discussions across disciplinary boundaries. In this edited volume, renowned authors explore how exposure to the framework of Cinematic Metaphor inspires their views of metaphor in film and of metaphor theory and analysis more generally. Contributions include explorations from the point of view of applied linguistics (Lynne Cameron), cognitive linguistics (Alan Cienki), media studies (Kathrin Fahlenbrach), media history (Michael Wedel), philosophy (Anne Eusterschulte), and psychology (Raymond W. Aim of this essay is to analyse the role of Pier Paolo Pasolini in the work and poetics of the GDR-author Heiner Müller. After an analysis of the reception of Pasolini’s works and persona in Germany and in the specific context of the GDR, the current work focuses on the influence of PPP in Müller’s approach to language, identity and history

Two-point position measurements with multi-element detectors : resistive or capacitive charge division?

    No full text
Two-point charge division is a typical technique for position measurements in linear multi-element detectors (microstrip detectors, multi-wire proportional chambers, silicon drift detectors, scintillator arrays coupled to photodetectors). This technique makes use of only two preamplifiers connected at the right and the left ends of the detection array, each of which receives a fraction of the total charge delivered by the event. The position of the event along the array is related to such fractions. In principle both resistor or capacitance dividers may be used to split the charge towards the two measurement points. The choice among such two possible setups is not obvious. In fact each of them shows advantages and disadvantages in terms of noise, signal propagation, linearity, which may vary depending upon the constraints dictated by the detection system. In this paper we present a comparative analysis which addresses the issues of this choice, considering as an example the realistic setup of the multiwire position-sensitive proportional counter to be used in the TP-MUSIC III chamber of the ALADiN experiment at GSI
