    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The effect of grape seed extract and fluor on biomimetic remineralization of dentin

    In this study, remineralization properties of fluoride and grape seed extract are compared in biomimetic remineralization procedure of dentin on demineralized dentin samples. 112 dentin samples with a size of 1x 3 x7 mm are demineralized for 10 days in demineralization solution. Demineralization solution is replaced every day. After demineralization procedure a group of samples (28 samples) are selected for hardness, elasticity, Young's modulus (tensile modulus) and SEM analysis. Rest of the samples are randomly divided into three group of control (RM Control), fluoride application (RM Fluoride) and grape seed extract application group (RM GSE). All samples are kept, according to their group, either in grape seed extract solution or in fluoride solution for 10 minutes, only once. Control group samples are directly immersed into SBF, which is used as remineralization solution, without any treatment. All teeth samples are kept in separate 15 ml SBF solutions. Standard Portland cement discs which were kept at %100 relative humidity and 37 0C for one week, are placed in SBF solution as calcium and hydroxyl ion source. While SBF is replaced every 48 hours, Portland cement discs did not changed. All samples are prepared for microhardness, elasticity and Young's modulus measurements after a six weeks of biomimetic remineralization process. SEM and EDX measurements are carried out on 2 samples from each group. Results show that demineralization group have significantly lower (p <0.05) hardness, elasticity and Young's modulus values than all remineralization groups and SEM images Show that all dentinal tubules are widened and regularly demineralized. İn EDX measurements DM group has the lowest calcium and phospate values among all groups. Remineralized samples have statistically significant (p<0.05) higher microhardness, elasticity and Young's modulus values than the demineralized group. Among the remineralized samples, RM Fluoride group has statistically significant (p<0.05) higher values than RM Control group, RM GSE group has statistically significant (p<0.05) higher values than both RM Fluoride and RM Control group in all measurements. SEM results show that some of the widened dentinal tubules of RM Control group are not entirely closed. RM Fluoride group show that all the dentinal tubules are closed and granular structures are formed on the surface. RM GSE group show that all the dentinal tubules are closed and granular structures are formed on surface as in RM Fluoride group. However, granular structures observed in RM GSE group has broader band. Consequently, it is determined that grape seed extract is a more effective remineralization agent than fluoride. We believe that either pre-application of grape seed extract before restoration or addition of grape seed extract in restorative materials may result in reduced secondary dental caries risk but it needs further in vivo studies.alışmamızda demineralize edilmiş dentin örnekleri üzerinde biomimetik remineralizasyon prosedüründe flor ve üzüm çekirdeği özünün remineralize edici etkilerinin karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmamızda 1X3X7 mm ölçülerinde hazırlanan 112 dentin örnekleği demineralizasyon solüsyonunda 10 gün, demineralizasyon solüsyonu her gün değiştirilerek bekletilmiştir. Demineralizasyon işlemi sonrası dentinin sertlik, elastikiyet ve Young Modülü değerlerinin ölçülmesi ve SEM incelemesinin yapılması için bir grup örnek (28 örnek) ayrılmıştır. Geri kalan örnekler rastgele olmak üzere ve her grupta 28 örnek olacak şekilde kontrol (RM Kontrol), flor (RM Flor), ve üzüm çekirdeği özü (RM ÜÇÖ) solüsyonu uygulanmak üzere ayrılmıştır. Tüm örnekler gruplara göre ya üzüm çekirdeği özü solüsyonunda ya da 1000 ppm flor solüsyonu içinde 10'ar dk. tek sefere mahsus olmak üzere bekletilmiştir. Kontrol grubuna ise herhangi bir işlem uygulanmadan remineralizasyon solüsyonu olarak kullanılan SBF içine atılmıştır. Tüm diş örnekleri ayrı ayrı 15 ml SBF içine konulmuştur. SBF içine kalsiyum ve hidroksil iyon kaynağı olması için önceden % 100 nemli ortamda ve 37 0C' de 1 hafta bekletilerek hazırlanmış standart 0.5 gr. Portland siman diskleri konulmuştur. SBF her 48 saatte bir değiştirilirken Portland siman diskleri değiştirilmeden korunmuştur. 6 haftalık biomimetik remineralizasyon süresi sonunda tüm örnekler mikrosertlik, elastikiyet ya da Young modülü ölçümleri için hazırlanmıştır. Her grupta 2 şer örnekte SEM ve EDX ölçümü yapılmıştır. Alınan sonuçlara göre demineralizasyon sonrası tüm örneklerde sertlik, elastikiyet ve Young modülü değerleri remineralizasyon uygulanan tüm gruplara göre anlamlı derecede düşükken (p<0.05) SEM görüntülerinde tüm dentin tübüllerinin açılarak yüzeyin düzenli bir şekilde demineralize olduğu görülmüştür. EDX analiz sonuçlarına göre DM grubu kalsiyum ve fosfat iyon miktarı karşılaştırıldığında tüm gruplar arasında en düşük değerleri sergilemektedir. Remineralize edilen örneklerin tümünde ise mikrosertlik, elastikiyet ve Young modülü değerlerinin demineralizasyon grubuna göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. (p<0.05) Remineralize edilen örnekler kendi aralarında değerlendirildiğinde RM Flor grubu RM Kontrol grubuna göre, RM ÜÇÖ grubu RM Flor grubu ve RM Kontrol grubuna göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmak üzere tüm ölçümlerde daha yüksek değerler sergilemiştir. (p<0.05) SEM incelesi sonrasında ise RM Kontrol grubunda, demineralizasyon sonrası açılan dentin tübüllerinin bir kısmının tıkandığı ancak tam bir kapanmanın sağlanmadığı, RM F grubunda tüm tübüllerin tamamen tıkandığı, yüzeyde granüler yapıların oluştuğu görülmüştür. RM ÜÇÖ grubunda ise tüm dentin tübüllerinin flor grubuna benzer şekilde tıkandığı, yüzeyin tamamen granüler yapılarla kapandığı görülmüştür ancak görülen bu granüler yapıların RM F grubundan daha kalın bir bantta izlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak dentin yüzeyinde üzüm çekirdeği özünün flordan daha etkili bir remineralizasyon ajanı olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu bulgular doğrultusunda doğrultusunda üzüm çekirdeği özünün restorasyon öncesi dentin yüzeyine uygulanması ya da restorasyon materyallerinin yapısına katılmasının sekonder çürük riskini azaltabileceği ve bu konuda in vivo çalışmalara ihtiyaç olduğu kanısındayız

    Objective: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the behavior of delaminated curved laminated glass beams exposed to different boundary conditions. Material and Methods: In this thesis, mathematical modeling and finite element modeling of glass beams have been made, considering the initial delamination state. In order to analyze the nonlinear behavior of curved laminated glass beams, a mathematical model has been developed using the minimum potential energy principles and the solution of the equations has been obtained by using the iterative solution method. A computer program was developed to solve the obtained nonlinear equations numerically, the results were compared with the developed finite element model and the results were given in graphics. Results: It was observed that the delaminated glass units showed nonlinear behavior. The level of nonlinearity of the fixed supported central delaminated beam is higher than the simply supported beam. Analyzes were made in different boundary conditions and as a result, it was seen that the simply supported beam had more stress and deflection values than the fixed supported beam. In addition, the behavior of the curved beam with center delamination was observed to be closer to the layered glass compared to laminated, layered and monolithic glass, and it was observed that the strength of the delaminated glass varies according to the location of the delaminated region. xv Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that the behavior of delaminated curved glass beams varies according to the location of the delamination and different boundary conditions.Amaç: Bu tezin amacı farklı sınır koşullarına maruz kalan delamine olmuş eğrisel cam kirişlerin davranışını analiz etmektir. Materyal ve Yöntem: Bu tezde cam kirişlerin başlangıçtaki delaminasyon durumu göz önünde bulundurarak matematiksel modellemesi ve sonlu elemanlar modellemesi yapılmıştır. Eğrisel lamine cam kirişlerin doğrusal olmayan davranışını çözümleyebilmek için minimum potansiyel enerji ilkeleri kullanılarak bir matematiksel model geliştirilmiş ve hakim denklemlerin çözümü tekrarlamalı çözüm yöntemi kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen doğrusal olmayan denklemleri sayısal olarak çözmek için bilgisayar programı geliştirilmiş elde edilen sonuçlar geliştirilen sonlu elemanlar modeli ile karşılaştırılmıştır ve sonuçlar grafikler halinde verilmiştir. Bulgular: Delamine cam birimlerin nonlineer davranış gösterdiği gözlemlenmiştir. Sabit mesnetli merkez delemaniasyonlu kirişin basit mesnetli kirişe göre nonlineerlik seviyesi daha yüksektir. Farklı sınır koşullarında analizler yapılmış ve bunun sonucunda basit mesnetli kirişin sabit mesnetli kirişe göre daha fazla daha fazla gerilme ve deplasman değerine sahip olduğu görülmüştür.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
