Jacques Poulin et le Nouveau Roman de Tendre: (Jacques Poulin and the New Tender Novel)
The main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the fundamental importance of the Carte de Tendre of Mlle de Scudéry in the works of Jacques Poulin. Distinct from previous studies, this analysis is based on the premise that Poulin has made a unique contribution to Quebec literature with his novel of tenderness which recalls the celebrated map in Clélie, Histoire Romaine. Where Scudéry envisages land, air and sea routes to Tendre, Poulin likewise evokes the themes of travel and tenderness. These two themes are intertwined since travel, for the poulinian hero, serves as a pretext for rediscovering his identity and better understanding both himself and others. Poulin finishes his characters maritime charts and road maps to help them establish bonds of friendship in their journey to Tendre. This study comprises five distinct yet interrelated chapters. After a review of the historical background of the Carte de Tendre, the first chapter brings to light the importance, according to Scudéry, of tenderness in human relationships and the routes that lead to tender amity. In similar fashion, Jacques Poulin creates a universe filled with sensitivity in which he explores the relationships between men and women. In chapter 2 Poulin\u27s novels of apprenticeship, his first three works, are analyzed. In Mon chevalpour un royaume almost all of the themes Poulin will later treat are present, especially that of the protagonist\u27s protective shell. This shell will prevent him from reaching out to others and from establishing relationships with them. His second novel, Jimmy, examines the childhood of the eleven year old narrator and his need for tenderness. Jimmy fails to break through his shell to communicate with unresponsive parents. In Le cœur de la baleine bleue Poulin clarifies the search for tenderness in describing Noel\u27s journey toward his inner pole, his soul. The author insists upon travel as a metaphor for the quest for tenderness. Chapter 3 highlights the various routes which lead to Tendre and the failure of the poulinian hero to reach his destination. The Formula 1 racetrack in Faites de beaux rêves symbolizes the road to nowhere which leaves the protagonist at an impasse in his journey. This track prefigures the circuit the hero makes in La tournée d\u27automne, a voyage which finally leads to Tendre. In Les grandes marées the protagonist, Teddy Bear, unable to establish a rapport with the other islanders, chooses to follow the current of the St. Lawrence River which leads him to his death. Thus the land and water routes in these narratives do not guide the traveler to Tendre. The fourth chapter is concerned with two pivotal novels in the quest for Tendre. The hero of Volkswagen blues follows the Oregon Trail in order to discover human wannth yet at the end of the journey finds himself isolated and silent. It is not until Le vieux chagrin that the poulinian protagonist succeeds in crossing the border into the land of Tendre by establishing a loving relationship with a young girl he ultimately adopts. The last chapter demonstrates the fulfillment of the quest for tenderness undertaken in the preceding novels. The hero of La tournée d\u27automne makes use of three routes, two by land and one by water, to enter the kingdom of Tendre. The road map to the human heart, introduced by Scudéry and rediscovered by Jacques Poulin, leads to a peaceable kingdom where tender amity reigns
The author uses theories of gender and materialist feminist theories to argue that Jacques Poulin’s novel Le vieux chagrin (1989) embodies a constructivist discourse on parenthood. In presenting a man who, to take on the tasks of caring, divests himself of the virile patterns of masculine identity, Poulin questions both the idea of a virile essence and the idea of a close connection between femininity and motherhood (which is a associated with tasks usually carried out by women and considered to be naturally theirs)
Non-universal BBN bounds on electromagnetically decaying particles
International audienceIn Poulin and Serpico [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 091101 (2015)] we have recentlyargued that when the energy of a photon injected in the primordial plasma fallsbelow the pair-production threshold, the universality of the non-thermal photonspectrum from the standard theory of electromagnetic cascades onto a photonbackground breaks down. We showed that this could reopen or widen the parameterspace for an exotic solution to the 'lithium problem'. Here we discuss anotherapplication, namely the impact that this has on non-thermal big bangnucleosynthesis constraints from 4He, 3He and 2H, using the parametric exampleof monochromatic photon injection of different energies. Typically, we findtighter bounds than those existing in the literature, up to more than one orderof magnitude. As a consequence of the non-universality of the spectrum, theenergy-dependence of the photodissociation cross-sections is important. We alsocompare the constraints obtained with current level and future reach of cosmicmicrowave background spectral distortion bounds
Approche onomastique de Les grandes marées de Jacques Poulin
This study aims to carry out an onomastics analysis in order to extract the key points in the novel Les grandes marées by Jacques Poulin. Literary onomastics gives us the opportunity to discover nuances in this work which, a priori, are imperceptible, but could be important for its interpretation. This type of analysis allows us to easily understand the portrayal of the characters and the relationships maintained between them.
In this analysis, we intend to demonstrate how the choice of characters’ names, even place names, is deliberately used by the author and as a consequence, this interpretation can help us to obtain a better understanding of this work. Physical effects involved in the measurements of neutrino masses with future cosmological data
International audienceFuture Cosmic Microwave Background experiments together with upcoming galaxyand 21-cm surveys will provide extremely accurate measurements of differentcosmological observables located at different epochs of the cosmic history. Thenew data will be able to constrain the neutrino mass sum with the bestprecision ever. In order to exploit the complementarity of the differentredshift probes, a deep understanding of the physical effects driving theimpact of massive neutrinos on CMB and large scale structures is required. Thegoal of this work is to describe these effects, assuming a summed neutrino massclose to its minimum allowed value. We find that parameter degeneracies can beremoved by appropriate combinations, leading to robust and model independentconstraints. A joint forecast of the sensitivity of Euclid and DESI surveystogether with a CORE-like CMB experiment leads to a uncertainty of~meV on the summed neutrino mass. However this particular combination givesrise to a peculiar degeneracy between and the optical depth atreionization. Independent constraints from 21-cm surveys can break thisdegeneracy and decrease the uncertainty down to ~meV

Composed till now of twelve novels written between 1967 and 2009, the work of Jacques Poulin maintains a very special relationship with Quebec City. Yet this Quebecois author is not interested in the entire city, but rather the historic quarter of Old Quebec. In this world, protected by the city s ramparts and the St. Lawrence River, a Poulinian character type wanders through the city, leaving occasionally sometimes in response to the call of the West, from America, sometimes to the call of the East, from his French origins but always returning. This thesis will study the relationship established between the city and the character who passes through it. The city, which is never described in the true sense of the term, is nevertheless recognizable for the Poulinian reader. In order to explore how its image is built, Italo Calvino s Invisible Cities will prove to be a valuable key. Through the eyes of this Italian author, this thesis will pay special attention to the dialogue that develops between reader and narrator in the creation of the literary city. The numerous comings and goings and the presence of a cyclical path allow the reader to notice a certain analogy between the city and the work. By attempting to identify the issues at work towards building the city s space, this thesis proposes to bring to light the poetics of Old Quebec abundant in Jacques Poulin s work and to analyze the search for identity, collective and personal, which is at play, but for which he is just as much a symbolic respondant.PARIS4-Bib.
On examining novels written in Quebec after the 1950s, surprisingly some common themes emerge. One finds progressively increasing references to the themes of the book, the library, and the author. In this thesis, we study the fictional work of Gerard Bessette and Jacques Poulin, two authors who make abundant references to the universe of the book. Their characters read, write, work and even live in libraries and bookshops. We will discuss the concept of the library, in order to clarify various key issues. Our definition of the library will include any place where books are read or stored. In other words, we do not intend to limit our study only to the traditional library, but rather to extend it to any place which shelters books. The concept of the library is thus taken in its broadest definition and includes the bookshop, the office, or even the bus. These books were selected because each author gives an account of contemporary Quebec history. In addition, the opposing themes in these fictitious worlds, seem to be at the core of the concept of the library. Indeed, it is at the same time both closedness and openness, both hoarding and lending. We will examine how the paradoxical realities are presented in these novels
Although Poulin’s novels cannot properly be described as crime novels, they are always playing with this genre. Investigations, chases, detectives, and dialogues referring to noir literary and film classics are frequent. The relationship is even stronger if we consider the playfulness that Poulin’s work constantly solicits, drawing the reader into the game. A poetics of the in-between characterizes the special atmosphere that surrounds the writing: a blurred, fog-like quality shared by countless movies as well as scenes in Poulin’s work. The urban setting that is a recurring feature of the crime genre is a necessary feature, providing the writing with a shifting set of objects and situations. The city, of course, is Québec, a key element of the work: more than a mere backdrop, it is a powerful force affecting the novel’s action and its characters’ movement. In this article, the author herself becomes an investigator, questioning the presence of the crime novel register in Volkswagen Blues and seeking to elucidate—or perhaps roughly interrogate—the enigma of Poulin as a crime novelist.«¿Conocen ustedes a este hombre?», pregunta Jack Waterman, con una foto en la mano, a Ferlinghetti en Volkswagen Blues (1984).
Linear cosmological constraints on two-body decaying dark matter scenarios and the S8 tension
International audienceThe “S8 tension” is a long-standing discrepancy between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and weak gravitational lensing determination of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, parametrized as S8≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5, where σ8 is the root-mean-square of matter fluctuations on an 8 h-1 Mpc scale, and Ωm is the total matter abundance. It was recently shown that dark matter (DM) decaying into a massless (dark radiation) and a massive (warm DM) species, with a lifetime Γ-1≃55(ϵ/0.007)1.4 Gyr—where ϵ represent the mass-energy fraction transferred to the massless component—can ease the tension. Thanks to a fast and accurate fluid approximation scheme for the warm species, we perform a comprehensive study of this two-body decaying DM scenario, discussing in detail its dynamics and its impact on the CMB and linear matter power spectra. We then investigate the implications for the S8 tension against a number of changes in the analysis: different S8 priors, marginalization over the lensing information in Planck data, trading Planck high-ℓ polarization data for those from the SPTpol and ACTPol surveys, and the inclusion of the recent results from the Xenon1T Collaboration. We conclude that the preference for decaying DM, apparent only when the S8 value determined from weak lensing data is added to the analysis, does not sensibly degrade the fit to any of the cosmological datasets considered, and that the model could potentially explain the anomalous electron recoil excess reported by the Xenon1T Collaboration. Furthermore, we explictly show that while current CMB data alone are not sensitive enough to distinguish between standard cold DM and decaying DM, next-generation CMB observations (CMB-S4) can unambiguously detect its signature
