Innovation and employment. A sectoral analysis in the EU
The aim of this chapter is twofold. On the one hand, the economic insights on the employment impact of technological change are discussed considering both theories and empirical studies. On the other hand, an empirical test is
provided: longitudinal data – covering manufacturing and service industries over the 1998-2011 period in 11 European countries – are used to run GMMSYS estimates. Two are the main results: 1) a significant labor-friendly impact
of R&D expenditures (related to product innovation) is found; 2) capital formation turns out to be negatively related to employment; this outcome suggests a possible labor-saving effect due to the embodied technological change
incorporated in gross investment (related to process innovation)

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are devices designed to deliver nicotine in a vaping solution rather than smoke and without tobacco combustion. Perceived as a safer alternative to conventional cigarettes, e-cigs are aggressively marketed as lifestyle-choice consumables, thanks to few restrictions and a lack of regulatory guidelines. Despite the burgeoning worldwide consumption of e-cigs, their safety remains largely unproven and it is unknown whether these devices cause in vivo toxicological effects
that could contribute to cancer. Here we illustrate the contribute of EPR radical probe technique in a study where it was possible to demonstrate the co-mutagenic and cancer-initiating effects of e-cig vapour in a rat lung model. It was found that e-cig have a powerful booster effect on phase-I carcinogen-bioactivating enzymes, and increase oxygen free radical production and DNA oxidation.
We are able to indirectly evaluate the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in lungs tissues of exposed rats, by using an appropriate hydroxylamine that in the presence of transient radical species gives rise to a persistent nitroxide radical. (see Scheme 1)
Scheme 1
We found a significant increase of radical species production in samples of lungs tissues from exposed rats compared to samples from non-exposed animals.

Le direttrici sono le due missioni della professione bibliotecaria, ovvero curare le raccolte dei documenti, indipendentemente dal formato, mettendoli in relazione tra di loro; garantire alle comunità servite l’accesso alle raccolte, anche attraverso l’information literacy;
1. verifica della presenza sui dizionari linguistici selezionati (in italiano e inglese);
The Role of Innovation in the Post-Entry Performance of New Small Firms
The aim of this paper is to relate the start-up decision to the postentry performance of new small firms . Hence this paper will adress questions such as: does an innovative enterpreneur have the same chances of postentry profitability as a conservative one? Does a former blue collar worker have the same chances as a former manager? Does a defensive motivation for the start-up of a new firm, such as the avoidance of unemployment, tend to be related to an inferior postentry performance? We relate those factors that are decisive in leading an economic agent to leave a mother company to start a new firm to the postentry performance of the new-born enterprise. This enables us to distinguish between the types of motivation leading to the better or poorer potentry performance. The results of the analysis may be of some help in designing national and lovìcal industrial policies. In the second section of this paper a survey of the previous studies on entry and postentry performance will be presented. The dataset which consists of a sample of 147 Italian spin-offs, is described in the third section. In the fourth section the hypothesis that different factors inducing new-firm start-upshave a disparate effect on thepostentry performance is tested. Finally the main findings are summarized
