    RIC-HSCT for MF/SS

    No full text
Advanced-stage mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome (MF/SS) have a poor prognosis. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), particularly using a reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimen, is a promising treatment for advanced-stage MF/SS. We performed RIC-HSCT in nine patients with advanced MF/SS. With a median follow-up period of 954days after HSCT, the estimated 3-year overall survival was 85.7% (95% confidence interval, 33.4-97.9%) with no non-relapse mortality. Five patients relapsed after RIC-HSCT; however, in four patients whose relapse was detected only from the skin, persistent complete response was achieved in one patient, and the disease was manageable in other three patients by the tapering of immunosuppressants and donor lymphocyte infusion, suggesting that graft-versus-lymphoma effect and "down-staging" effect from advanced stage to early stage by HSCT improve the prognosis of advanced-stage MF/SS. These results suggest that RIC-HSCT is an effective treatment for advanced MF/SS

Single and Combined Effect of Acute Sleep Restriction and Mental Fatigue on Basketball Free-Throw Performance

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the single and combined effects of sleep restriction (SR) and mental fatigue (MF) on free-throw (FT) performance among adult male basketball players. Methods: A total of 19 amateur male basketball players performed, in a randomized, counterbalanced, and crossover order, 2 identical experimental sessions separated by an interval of 1 week. The difference between the 2 sessions was in the quantity of sleep the night before the sessions, as follows: in one case, the participants followed their habitual sleep–wake routines; in the other session, they were forced to sleep not more than 5 hours. During the experimental sessions, the participants performed 60 basketball FTs on 2 occasions, separated by watching a basketball tactical video for 30 minutes designed to induce MF. As such, the FT test was completed in 4 different conditions: control, MF, SR, and SR and MF combined. Results: The participants registered a significantly lower total sleep time in acute SR (P < .001). The subjective rating of MF was lower in the control than in MF, SR, and SR and MF combined (P < .001). There were no differences between conditions for the subjective ratings of motivation. FT accuracy was higher in the control than in MF, SR, and SR and MF combined (P = .010), while no differences were observed between the 3 experimental conditions (all P > .05). Conclusion: The results indicate that a combined effect of MF and SR induces a small reduction in basketball FT performance, similar to MF or SR alone

Functionally Relevant Cytokine/Receptor Axes in Myelofibrosis

Dysregulated inflammatory signaling is a key feature of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), most notably of myelofibrosis (MF). Indeed, MF is considered the prototype of onco-inflammatory hematologic cancers. While increased levels of circulatory and bone marrow cytokines are a well-established feature of all MPNs, a very recent body of literature is intriguingly pinpointing the selective overexpression of cytokine receptors by MF hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), which, by contrast, are nearly absent or scarcely expressed in essential thrombocythemia (ET) or polycythemia vera (PV) cells. This new evidence suggests that MF CD34(+) cells are uniquely capable of sensing inflammation, and that activation of specific cytokine signaling axes may contribute to the peculiar aggressive phenotype and biological behavior of this disorder. In this review, we will cover the main cytokine systems peculiarly activated in MF and how cytokine receptor targeting is shaping a novel therapeutic avenue in this disease

Preparation of mono-sized epoxy/MF microcapsulesin the appearance of polyvinyl alcohol as co-emulsifier

For epoxy microcapsules embedded in concrete as mechanic-triggered self-healing adhesive, globular shape with uniform size is the basic requirement to ensure the solid shell broken and the liquid core released at a designed stress. In this paper, monodispersed melamine\u96formaldehyde (MF) resin-walled epoxy E-51 microcapsules were successfully fabricated in an in situ polycondensation process, in which a certain amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution was added as coemulsifier to control the microcapsules\u92 shape and size. Detail investigation shows, with the cooperation of PVA, the microcapsule morphologies and size distribution were ease to be adjusted by the parameters such as emulsifying agents, agitation rate, pH value and acidification time

Lights and shadows in autoinflammatory syndromes from the childhood and adulthood perspective

    No full text
In a high percentage of cases, the monogenic autoinflammatory syndromes (AIS), caused by subversion in the inflammasome homeostasis leading to cytokine oversecretion and characterized by multiple inflammatory pictures, start in childhood. However, the description of tardive manifestations, veiled phenotypes, and atypical clinical signs beginning in adulthood has been more and more reported in recent times, requiring that many specialists become confident with concepts, details, and management strategies of AIS. Differences between child- and adult-onset syndromes raise the question of whether pathogenic mechanisms might differ when the timetable of AIS onset diverges, but show that carefulness is needed to establish a straightforward diagnosis

ACT Family Violence Intervention Program review

This paper reports on a review of the Australian Capital Territory’s Family Violence Intervention Program, which provides an interagency response to family violence matters. The scope of the review was to analyse the program’s activities and outcomes using 2007–08 data provided by participating agencies, supported by in-depth interviews with key stakeholders including victims whose matters had been finalised in court. After the completion of this report, additional data from 2008–09 and 2009–10 was made available by some Family Violence Intervention Program (FVIP) participating agencies. Although not within the scope of this evaluation, these data pointed to some preliminary improvements in the FVIP
